Stop ads on CBC Radio!

If you want to protest CBC's plan to put ads on CBC radio, or find out more information about CBC issues, I suggest you check out:  http://www.friends.ca/

He says that among Western countries, most have fully-funded public networks, making Canada and the U.S. anomalies.

Measured per capita, Canada had the third lowest level of public funding of 18 Western countries in 2004, according to a 2006 Nordicity study commissioned by the CBC. Our $28 per inhabitant was ahead of only New Zealand and the U.S., and far below the $80 average across 18 countries. Canada's funding was about one-fifth of the level of the leading country, Switzerland.

Another article about the CBC in The Toronto Star again today describing the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting anti-ads campaign, plus Jeffrey Simpson spoke up in the G+M on Saturday.  Maybe there will be a public discussion about the current (mis)management and corporate-style strategy at the CBC. That would be a good thing! Using public broadcaster funding to bankrupt itself by over-paying for American programmes is insanity!

I mentioned in the much longer thread on the CBC funding that I really doubt whether ads will be on CBC Radio.  The private companies do NOT want more competition for a currently shrinking number of ad dollars.  This would especially be prevalent in the larger English language markets: Toronto and Ottowa, Vancouver.

I suspect on the radio side this is a form of public pressure to the powers that be, the Cons.  Chorus, Rogers and Astral don't want competition, naturally, because they have the market fairly well sewn up to start with.  That's why there are few independant radio stations in operation.

I suspect, instead of ads, the Ceeb will just cut programs and staff.  We'll know fairly soon what changes to the radio side will be coming, since I believe it's budgeting time for radio right now.

Freezes, bonuses. Id be curious to know what kind of money they are talking about. So if the CBC has to choose between executive pay, how much for Mansbridge by-the-way, or selling off their buildings in Toronto, Montreal & Vancouver, etc. my preference would be to totally gut their TV News Department. Who needs right-wing Liberal propaganda anyway. Laughing        CBC to freeze exec pay, cut bonuses, and sell assets

Now where's that article about the Harpies considering bailout money for CanWest.

The Harper government is considering help for Canada's troubled private TV broadcasters, including the possibility of looser regulations and tax changes.

Heritage Minister James Moore said yesterday the cabinet is aware of the threat to local news content should more local stations close.

He confirmed that the government is looking specifically at how to assist Canwest Global Communications, which is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. "We're mindful of that and we're thinking about whether or not there's anything the government can do, but I can't be any more specific than that right now," Moore said.

He hinted the help could come in the form of looser regulations and tax system changes, which would also help other private networks.

"The role of the government is to make sure the regulatory regime, the tax regime is more flexible, more forgiving and more open in the future," Moore said.

Several high-placed industry and government sources say discussions at the highest levels of government have intensified as Canwest's April 7 deadline to satisfy creditor demands draws nearer.

One of the original stories I saw on CP said that CanWest hired a lobbyist to push for bailout money.  It was a former executive aide to Harper.

See...this is exactly how I envision the conservative propaganda machine to operate. Their propaganda networks are in trouble so to level the field or rather keep it tilted they have to undermine and destroy the CBC while at the same time, bailout in non obvious ways the conservative propaganda machine.

The CBC had their golden opportunity to rid us of this conservative plague during the last election...and blew it. They chose to promote tory propagnada and biasly humiliate the NDP. Probably to save their ass , but maybe now they will realize they are just pawns in the tory divide and conquer chaos game.  I guess tho , instead of appointing conservative propaganda super stars to the senate ...for the CBC they will offer the elite tempting retirement packages (rewards) for a job well done.

Should be entertaining to see who the CBC tory snakes are.....

For all of the private industry's complaints about public funding of the CBC the last thing commerical radio broadcasters want is to have to compete with CBC Radio for ad revenue.

Agreed. In fact, if anything, they will remove ads from CBC television. Won't matter though. There still won't be enough ad revenue. The monoculture corporate media model is diseased and it must die out for there to be renewal. The corporate media is (or soon will be) dead! Long live the free press!

There is going to be a VERY BAD announcement from the CBC tomorrow, probably about staff and program cutbacks caused by Harper's continuing anti-CBC bias.  Possibly a death knell for English CBC TV. It is very disturbing to me to see that Harper hates the CBC just about as much as the rapid leftist babblers.  Maybe these two forces should get together to form a right-left coalition party composed of citizens who can't stand to hear anything that they don't agree with.  Or maybe we should just give up and merge Canada into the USA? When you hear the annnouncement tomorrow, PLEASE take action using the links above.
