I still can't do links either, Windows Vista, IE.

At least I figured out how to get rid of the default "Email me about all replies"

Um, where did the picture in the personal profile come from? What is that thing? Ha I really don't remember uploading a picture any time.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

If it's that hideous puppet, it's default.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

- testing the anchor, showed up blank when I didn't type anything.

anchovy breather

Hideous puppet it would be. It's quite disturbing.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

Strikethrough doesn't work for me either

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

B and I work but U only shows up in preview.

Hey! That's our good friend Ruckus the Sock Monkey you're disparaging there... :D They just have that on as a default picture.

I uploaded another picture, but I don't like it. But when I tried to change it by deleting the one I uploaded, it went back to Ruckus. Then I uploaded a new one, and it changed to the first one I uploaded and didn't like.

Weird.

Anyhow, overall I think this is an improvement. And we're going to see what we can do about the public e-mail addresses so that we can just get rid of that field altogether, I think. That way people who haven't been here for a while won't accidently have visible e-mail addresses if they didn't realize they had chosen the "public e-mail" option.

Michelle

What's up with the line in the middle of the window when typing in the message with rich-text, I wonder.

By the way, does everyone realize that you can get the formatting options by clicking on "Enable rich-text" just below the window?

anchovy breather

I think because the picture is so tiny there that it makes Ruckus look a little twisted.

I keep getting asked to allow stuff from my clipboard when I try to copy and paste from elsewhere.  And there's no easy "Quote" function, just manual when quoting sources.

Also some problems changing the avatars for your profile. Obviously the monkey had to go. So I changed it to some random picture, which worked. Decided I didn't like that picture and tried to change it to something that I liked. At first it didn't work, so I deleted the picture and got the monkey back, then I tried to upload the new picture I wanted, but instead of that picture I got the random picture I had selected to test the function the first time, and not the new picture I wanted.

I got that too. I uploaded my pic that I liked but it wouldn't load so I figured it was the pic so I tried a second choice pic and like magic my first choice pic appeared. I'm happy.

okay, I desperately miss the new post at the top that you could click on and it would automatically take you too the newest posts, now I have to scroll down if I am accessing the thread from the active topics page.

al-Qa'bong

I went to start a new thread...but can't see how to do it.

How does one start a new topic?

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

On your my menu on the right is a "Create content" link.  Goto "Forum topic"

George Victor

Nothing on my menu says "create content".

I lied...found it.

George Victor

What is happening when I "allow access" to my clipboard?

I really like the profile pages, the wide comment editor, and the larger font. Congrats to the tech folks on these improvements.

Is there any way that the tech folks can change the thread structure, so there's no difference between 'opening post' and 'comments', so they're all just posts or comments (depending on what Drupal would call them in this case)? So we can edit thread titles and opening posts, and so our post total can be based on all posts, not just opening posts? Is there a Drupal module that the tech folks can download and install that will do some or all of this?

The 'opening post' and 'comments' thread structure is the biggest remaining flaw with the new babble, as far as I'm concerned.

um, test.

I've since calmed down from my initial 'omg!' and I'd like to take the time to thank the development team for their work here--it seems obvious that they've taken our concerns and suggestions to heart and several improvements are clearly on the horizon.

So when can we start making more suggestions? Like, the font in the comment box is waay too small (and I didn't have a problem with the fontsize before) and I'm not sure, but I think pasting text into the comment box is worse than it was before, unfortunately. Although I remain confident that both these tweaks will be fixed soon.

Thanks, tech team! And thanks also to the mods who communicated our desires so effectively and showed the patience of Job amidst the torrent of criticism and complaints of those nostalgics among us who long for a bit of stability, if only in our babbling.

Me too. I really like the rest of the changes but miss that. It was one of my favourite and most useful things with the new Babble.

[s]Why doesn't strikethrough work?[/s]

And what about different colours? Huh??

Not to mention typefaces?

And underlining?

I'm glad we have a larger font size, my eyesight isn't what it used to be.

Test:

Bold  Italics

ETA: these don't work, although they show up when composing:

Underline   Strikethrough     anchor    text colour    horizontal ruler

Okay why is it then when I write my comment in the comments box sometimes it stays within the comment box and sometimes my paragraph is one really big long line until I hit enter for the next paragraph?  It's really annoying when I am trying to compose because if I want to read it over I have to press preview.  But it doesn't happen all the time, either.

Other than those two issues (new post issue as well) love the "new" babble.

Michelle

That's weird - that doesn't happen to me either.  What browser are you using?

Refuge Refuge's picture

It happened so far just on my Internet explorer, not on my Safari.  Hmmm, may have found a clue. When I paste something in (either with the clipboard in the box or by right clicking) it always happens. Will have to watch if it happens when I don't paste anything into the box.

Coyote

I like being able to do bullets because:

 • It's organized;
 • it's sequential; and,
 • it makes it looks like I have a point, when I'm really just being inane.

Seriously though, I like bullets.

My link icon isn't working. but can i do it manually? Oilers. Yup. Huzzah!

Coyote

I kinda miss the location line from the original board. I think people did some creative things with that.

Or even after I hit enter. Weird. Please fix this.

Also, I miss the feature of being able to click on "6 new comments" and go straight to the new comments. That was very handy. Why has it vanished?

clersal

Too bad it it too wide for my screen which is annoying.

Refuge Refuge's picture

okay, good news, I can edit opening posts.  Bad news - they aren't mine!  Why can I edit opening posts in babble book lounge?

If this has anything to do with being a moderator I am out, the way people are treating moderators around here you couldn't pay me enough!

I haven't come across my quasi-mod powers in any other forum or any post but the opening post but watch out to people who start a topic in babble book lounge! Least until they fix it!

I have this problem, too, on my desktop, but not my laptop, which has a smaller screen. Weird. It was like this before the upgrade, too. I'll have to mess with the screen rersolution, maybe.

Coyote

Why do I see an envelope that says "contact user" when I scroll over it only for Boom Boom and no one else? It's beside the private message icon.

Occassionally, my tag line, that I used to have pops up when I am responding, but not all the time, tis very strange.

Coyote

It's also kinda deflating to click on one's profile only to have the first thing one sees be the flat declaration: "you have no status".

al-Qa'bong

I tried adding a link to a post, then was told in the body of the "Insert" window that babble blocked a suspicious site, which was, I believe, the "Insert Link" window itself.

That's not so bad; my profile says "All your base are belong to us."

Well, whatever they did makes a Babble thread completely impossible to open in IE 6.x  It must be javascript problems or something, but it completely crashes the whole page, and I get a message saying I'm running out of Virtual Memory.

I'm writing this from Firefox, but won't always be able to use it.

What did they do, anyway?

Wilf Day

ottawaobserver wrote:

So upgrade to IE 7. It works.

ottawaobserver

Many people use IE 6.x in environments they have no control over Wilf.  Also, developers have a responsibility to program for multiple browsers and platforms, which is one reason I continue to use it, to ensure that my own work functions properly in as many environments as possible.

I realize your answer is obvious to an individual user, but it's not an acceptable solution in many cases.  It's like saying to someone complaining the french translation was bad ... well just read it in English.

jas

No browser problems (although I still use the obsolete Netscape 9.0), but I miss the feature where, when you click on the thread, there was a link at the top, "19 new posts" or whatever the number is, that you could click on and it takes you immediately to the new posts. I also had got used to and enjoyed the smaller, tidier font. This one looks a little square and boxy to me.

Haven't tried the tools yet.

Caissa

How does one now find out how many new posts in a thread since you last visited it?

Caissa

Bump- Does anyone know the answer to my question?

Wilf Day

When I copy and paste something, everything thereafter becomes a single paragraph; nothing I can do creates separate paragraphs. WTF???

Caissa wrote:

Yay!  I just figured out how to get around the lack of the number of new posts posted at the top when you come from Active Topics.  Instead of clicking on the actual topic, click on the name of the last post by person.  It will take you to their home page which includes their topics which includes the number of new posts since I last read the thread.  Just click on that number and it takes you to the right part of the thread.

It's a little backwards and I still wish that they would put the number of new posts at the top of the page again but until that is fixed it helps me when I am on my dial up connection so I don't have to sift through so much.

Doug

I like it...EXCEPT that it seems to freeze my computer at work. However, this might be a good thing for my performance.

al-Qa'bong

Sometimes after I quote something the text I write comes out in a tiny font.

Quote:
"Clark University canceled a campus talk scheduled for later this month by controversial Holocaust scholar Norman Finkelstein, saying his presence "would invite controversy and not dialogue or understanding," and would conflict with a similar event scheduled around the same time." As is known, the First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech provided it is not controversial.

I'm testing this quote.

al-Qa'bong

See?

Michelle

Yeah.  I think I mentioned that to them but it got lost in the shuffle of the larger problems around quoting.  I'll mention it to them again.  Thanks for the reminder!
