favourite Gore Vidal quotes

Gore Vidal was on Bill Maher's show on HBO last week, and although he's quite frail and elderly now his mind is still sharp, and he tosses out incredible one liners, still. Maher asked him what he thinks of Sarah Palin, and Vidal said he doesn't think of her at all, and that he believes she doesn't think at all.Laughing

Vidal is one of America's best novelists and best essayists, and I used to read his various collections of essays - he's quite prolific.

Some of his quotes from the past are:

Any American who is prepared to run for president should automatically, by definition, be disqualified from ever doing so.

Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.

As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate, action: you liberate a city by destroying it. Words are to confuse, so that at election time people will solemnly vote against their own interes.

A narcissist is someone better looking than you are.

By the time a man gets to be presidential material, he's been bought ten times over.

Half of the American people have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half.

Think of the earth as a living organism that is being attacked by billions of bacteria whose numbers double every forty years. Either the host dies, or the virus dies, or both die.
Today's public figures can no longer write their own speeches or books, and there is some evidence that they can't read them either.

"We live in the United States of forget. Nobody remembers anything."

This evolved into the expression that al-Qa'bong quoted ... "Well that's why I call it the United States of Amnesia. Nobody can remember anything anyways."

After one of his books was removed from Amazon's ranking system for allegedly having 'adult' content, Gore Vidal responded 'Why don't they just burn the books? They'd be better off and it's very visual for television'.

Did anyone else catch Vidal on the Bill Maher show on HBO? It's on every Friday night, and repeated throughout the following week.

Quote:

"There are two governments. There is the national security government, put into place by the National Security Act of 1947. That's the real government of the country. There is the cosmetic government, for show, ongoing presidential government and Congress, which is totally meaningless now." - Interview Magazine, reprinted in SFC 6/2/88

I meant to watch it, and forgot.  I just did a search to see if was available on line-- it was-- but HBO has been objecting. I should be able  to access it tonight, via the cathode ray tube.

"Every four years the naive half who vote are encouraged to believe that if we can elect a really nice man or woman President everything will be all right. But it won't be."

And so on.

Fotheringay-Phipps

"There is only one party in the United States, the Property Party . . . and it has two right wings: Republican and Democrat."

I wouldn't blame Vidal if he produced that line on more than one occasion. I know he uttered it when he was living in Italy and trying to explain the nature of American democracy to his neighbours.

Fotheringay-Phipps, good one!

Gore Vidal wrote:
