20th anniversary of Hillsborough football disaster

Another historical note - 96 Liverpool football fans were crushed to death on 15 April 1989 during Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final tie with Nottingham Forest at the stadium in Sheffield.

The memorial ceremony is playing live right now:

They're reading all the individual names of the victims now.

If my calculations are correct, the actual moment of silence will take place at 10:06 Eastern time - 7 minutes from now - the moment when the game was abandoned 20 years ago.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

Four days after the Hillsborough disaster, and six minutes into a European Cup semi-final between AC Milan and Real Madrid in the San Siro, the referee pauses for a minute of silence. And then the Spanish and Italian fans, all class, break into a spontaneous rendition of Liverpool's historic anthem, "You'll Never Walk Alone," in tribute to Liverpool's fallen supporters. Now that's emotional.

As a Liverpool fan, I remember the tragedy vividly. Too bad they couldn't have one the Premier this year as a fitting memorial.
