Nova Scotia Election Results

Polls close at 7:00 AST. [6:00 EST / 3:00 PST]

If I remember correctly results start trickling in after half an hour.

[My memory of which elections that is true are rather dim, if someone else in NS wants to correct me.]

It the actual results are anything like the polling numbers, things will start being called pretty quickly. Ditto for when/if a NDP government, at least a minority, is called.

People could post where you can get the quickest live results on the web.

Well the polls have just closed and no results are in yet, but CTV has just projected that they are 81% certain the NDP will win a majority government.

the grey

6 Lib, 5 NDP, 4 Cons -- but just about 1 poll reporting in each.

the grey

NDP - 13 (+1) - 45%

Lib - 6 (+1) - 29

PC -  6 (-2) - 24

this one is nice, though perhaps a little premature:

The polls have now closed in Nova Scotia, and CTV Atlantic is projecting an NDP government, the first ever in Atlantic Canada.

NDP Leader Darrell Dexter is now set to become the next premier of Nova Scotia.

NDP leading in Glace Bay and neck-and-neck with the PCs in Cape Breton North.

Beliveau now way out in front in Shelburne, Conrad trailing the Liberals in Queens with only one poll in, Whynott out to a decent lead in Hammonds Plains, decent NDP lead in Guysborough, Paris trailing in Waverly-Fall River-Beaverbank (only 1 poll in), Whalen leading by 1 vote with 1 poll in Halifax-Clayton Park.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

I suspect we swon't see him, think he was a Lib or Tory plant.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

and of course, we were always going to win Dart North - that has been NDPO for a decade!

Sharon

I was very nervous all day -- butterflies in my stomach -- but I seem to be feeling better now. Smile  I'm heading for Dartmouth quite soon.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

NDP 18

Lib 12

PC 7

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

There are six ridings way too close to call, three with margins of ONE vote! Chester St. Marg, Hfx Clyton Park - the former held by Tories , latter by Libs - both have us nipping at their heels.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Cumberalnd North the NDP WAY ahead! So glad I called that one, lol

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

oops, CUMBERLAND NORTH

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

In Colchester- Musquodoboit Valley, where Brooke Taylor won last time by 3,000 votes, Ken Streach who hails from a long time Tory family is behind by one vote.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Darn, Libs just jumped ahrad again in Glace Bay, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

But NDP has 46% of the vote which means one in two Nova Scotians has voted NDP!! How wonderful is that?

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

as a Lib commentator just said, the NDP is just on the verge of a Majority Govt!!!!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

by the way, I predicted 30 NDP, 12 PC and 10 Libs and now is it is 30 NDP and 11 each for the others. Judy Stretch, wife of gerald Keddy and sister of the oth strech mentioned, is running third in Chester- St, Margaret's. The NDP is ahead! 157 vote lead!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

CBC has just declared the NDP will form a MAJORITY govt!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

NDP 31

Lib 11

PC 10

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

The 11 points gained by the NDP almost exclusively came from the PC's.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

and where is my friend in Cumberaland North, now elected an NDP MLA!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

NDP Gains- Eastern Shore, Cumberland North, (Tory since Charles Tupper), Lunenburg!, Guysborough, Truro Bible Hill(Lenore Zann- an interestng seat!),

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Current standings -

NDP 32

Lib 10

PC 10

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

OMG, Gary Birrill won!!! I am amazed, good for Gary!!!! (a good friend). I am thrilled for him!

ghoris

There are still lots of close races so those numbers could move around. Results seem to be slow in some seats.

Assuming that the Libs and Tories end up with 10 apiece, how do they decide who forms the 'official' opposition? Do the Tories get is as the last government? Do they use popular vote as a tiebreaker? Or do they not have an 'official' opposition and just two opposition parties?

ghoris

Yikes - Liberals have slipped into the lead in Dartmouth East - did anyone see that coming?

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Libs now in Official Opposition if this keeps up (11 seats to 10 for PC), 31  NDP seats

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

ghoris

. you and I seem to have the same ideas, lol

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

No but Dartmouth East is not over yet!

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Halifax have 53.7% of the vote in Halifax, 12/ 13 seats

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

and I note that Dartmouth North is a rout, as someone asked earlier, where is that fellow who claimed it would oust us there, lol 56% of the vote!

ghoris

NDP is still in the hunt in Glace Bay (trailing by 175), CB North (trailing by 220), Preston (trailing by 164), Dartmouth East (trailing by 64 with 6 polls to report).

Whelan looks like she's squeaked out a win in Halifax-Clayton Park. The NDP trails by roughly 900 votes in Bedford-Birch Cove with 34/53 polls remaining but unless they're all superstrong NDP polls left to report, it's doubtful they'll close the gap.

NDP still has narrow leads in Pictou Centre (110 votes), Halifax-Citadel-Sable Island (231 votes), Kings North (460 votes), Kings South (260 votes), Lunenberg West (400 votes).

Peter3

Gee, I thought the pollsters were painting the Annapolis Valley Liberal red?

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

If the Tories and Libs both have the same no, because they were in govt before the writ was dropped, the Tories will be official oppositon, It is more complex than that but that is the Coles Notes version. I should also note that in 1998, both the Libs and the NDP finished the election eacjh with 19 seats. However, the Liberals HAD been the govt so the L Gov asked them to form a govt. Same principle.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

It is alas - 44% but there are a few NDP seats there

Hopefully the Liberals will be able to hold it - the NDP has already won more than enough seats to win a majority but if we want the PC's to finish 3rd so the Libs can be the official opposition, the Libs need to hold in the standings.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Peter3

Hmmm. CBC shows the LIbs elected and leading in only 2 of 6 Annapolis ridings.

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Looks like Libs will be Official Opposition.   PC's have  about 15% of the vote

JaneyCanuck JaneyCanuck's picture

Darrell will bespeaking soon !!!!

ghoris

I'd rather have the Libs knock off the Tories in Hants West and have the NDP take Dartmouth East and Glace Bay, which would leave NDP 33, Lib 10 and PC 9.
