WASHINGTON - Hunting spies is difficult, but Cuban spies are notoriously hard to detect, former senior intelligence officials said a day after an American husband and wife were indicted on charges of spying for Cuba.

Walter Kendall Myers and his wife Gwendolyn of Washington were arrested Thursday after a three-year investigation that began before Myers' retirement from the State Department in 2007. They had been spying for Havana for 30 years, according to the U.S. government.

Investigations like this typically take years to come together because they usually turn on small pieces of information, and Cuban spies often leave few traces. Cuban intelligence specializes in recruiting "true believers" rather than agents who are out to make money, these officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

Spying for a foreign government and passing classified information to an unauthorized source will always get you arrested. People have been sent to prison in the US for giving friendly Israel classified information.

The poor Cuban five. Sent to the US to spy on people that don't exist. That is so called anti-Fidel terrorists that supposedly live and train on US military bases. There are groups of anti-Castro exiles but they have been inactive for years and receive zero support from the US government.

The Cuban five are suckers duped by the propaganda of the dictatorship they are serving.

Retired Cuban President Fidel Castro wrote about this and laughed about it. The US took a recent horrible political thumping with its own puppet organization - the OAS - over the treatment of Cuba and, says the old man, they're still smarting. Who knows? Fidel's column is called "A Ridiculous Response to a Defeat".
