Smokey Robinson is on Elvis Costello's "Spectacle" show tonight!!! I love his music.

Glad you enjoyed, Catchfire! I've seen the unedited versions of my better half's Take-Away Show. I'll let you all know when they're posted on the site.

NPR broadcasts some great live shows via podcast, as well.

Wow - Smokey Robinson is the real deal. Great interview, and good music, from a real gentleman and a true artist.

Well, right now I'm listening to some horrible (is there any other kind?) Johnny Halliday on nostalgie.fr., but over the last couple of days I've been looking over the CD-Rom of  Brian Rusts's Jazz Records: 1897-1942, that recently came in the mail.

Hotcha razz ma-tazz!

al-Qa'bong

The CD-Rom has some advantages over the hardcover version of Rust's book.  Last night I was looking up the recording information for this cheapo CD collection that I found in a bargain bin in a major Babylon retailer.  The only information given with the record is the singer and the song title:

Ladies of Jazz

Some of the singers aren't listed in the Artist Index of the discography, as they were canaries with orchestras.  For example, I couldn't find Judy Ellington's recording of "Some Like it Hot," so I did a "Control+ F" search and she and the song popped up under "Charlie Barnet," which I should have known anyway, since I have the tune on a Charlie Barnet record.

Anyway, I think it's keen to be able to go from knowing only "Caravan - Valaida Snow" to " Valaida Snow: Acc. by Lulle Ellbojs Orkester: Sven Arefeldt dir. Bengt Artander, Gunnar Green, t / Sture Green, tb / Gunnar Wallberg, Runes "Lulle" Ellboj, as / Rudolf Eriksson, ts / Willard Ringstrand, p / Karl Löhr, g / Roland Bengtsson, sb / Olle Sahlin, d. Stockholm, August 28, 1939.

This is pretty fun. Mr. Jrose was asked to compile a list of his 10 favourite albums for a website. Some interesting choices! http://www.owlandbear.com/2009/07/07/poetic-memory-the-rest/

I wonder why "Pet Sounds" seems to be on everyone who's anyone's Top Ten list.  Is it that good, or is it cool to think it's good?

jrose

It's that good!

Until I was with Mr. Jrose, I thought the Beach Boys were simply what I had grown up seeing: Aged Beach Boys singing Kokomo on at least one episode of Full House. And after articulating that, one morning on New Years Day, a few years ago, my better half and I laid in bed and listened to Pet Sounds from top to bottom, and it truly was one of the best hours we've spent together. It's a beautiful album.

We recently bought it on vinyl and have been listening to it over and over again. It really is that good.

I hear ya.  That lady knows how to wail with the slide guitar.  I saw her a few years (well, about 20) ago.  Does she still play live shows?

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

I just missed her in Vancouver. She played Canada Day in Ottawa and is to appear at the Blues Festival in Kitchener.

That reminds me. Now that I'm on the west coast I want to see Gaye Delorme play. Now there's another outstanding blues guitarist.

I went to a lovely memorial service the other night, for Jackie Washington -- A Hamilton legend/Blues musician who just passed away at 89. It was a beautiful night -- more a celebration than anything -- with friends getting up to tell stories about him and lots of music! I find in many snobbish circles, Hamilton has an awful reputation, which for the most part is unfounded. This would have been a perfect evening for specators to look in, and realize the city really does have some amazing things to offer, including a thriving arts scene.

Melissa McLelland - Thumbelina's One Night Stand

I keep hitting repeat on the song Solitary Life. It's one of those perfect tracks (music, lyrics and performance) that I just have to hear again and again.

I can't find that song on YouTube, but here's a link to the video for Passenger 24, which is also quite wonderful.

I had a request for his music last week, but our station doesn't have any of his records (or at least I couldn't find one, but I was looking only in our jazz vinyl section).

Well, that's great to hear that you received a request. I grew up on his music, listening to him every year at our local folk festival -- Festival of Friends. Here's a clip of him playing there in 1976 (Before the Tim Hortons and Pizza Huts moved into the festival!)

jrose

Yea, I've been listening to a lot of MJ too. The first few tapes I bought when I was a kid were the following: 1) Ace of Base 2) Michael Jackson's Dangerous 3) Janet Jackson. I can't help but pull them out from time to time. (Well, maybe not the Ace of Base one -- that's just embarrassing!)

Caissa

Has anyone heard the new Wilco album? i was planning on purchasing it tomorrow.

jrose

I've heard it, Caissa, though I've yet to buy it. They steamed it from the website awhile back, so I was able to copy it to my iTunes, but I'm still planning to buy it. I'm a huge Wilco fan, so I want this one to add to the collection, but I must admit it's my least favourite.

The new one reminds me a lot of their last album. It's a pretty straightforward folk-rock album, lacking a lot of the interesting elements of their earlier stuff.

Basically, it's decent. I liked it, but I'm not drooling all over it like I have with their stuff in the past. But it's Wilco -- I don't think they can make a bad album if they tried.

I checked out their tour documentary at Hot Docs in Toronto this year. It's great! It really gave me the itch to see them live again. It's been awhile ...

Caissa

Thanks, Jrose. I love their album with Billy Bragg since I am a big fan of both.

jrose

Me too! Such a great album.

I saw Jeff Tweedy live at the Ann Arbor folk festival, and his solo set was just as great as seeing him with a full band.

I am currently listening to that new Dead Prez record Pulse of the People. I know that most people on this board won't listen to anything hip hop related but they should at least give some of it a try. DP is very political and they represent one of the "real" things happening in hip hop today. Forget about Kanye, Jay-Z, Beyonce, Lil Wayne and all that pop stuff, go to the real street music. Dead Prez in 2009. I also just picked up the new Mos Def album The Ecstatic and it is bangin'. What else is good in '09? Talib Kweli is always good but he has not put out anything new in some time but he is still great. Here are my summer recommendations: Bad Brains, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, and then some Dead Kennedys, trust me you will get enough education for the whole year listening to this stuff.

I've been listening to UB40 (The UB40 Files and UB40 Live)  quite a bit over the last couple of weeks.

yup DP, Immortal Tech, and others all are all real artist u had recent albums out so u know

I've been listening to a lot of Bad Brains lately. They're a most excellent band - they were one of the bands that really got me into the metal genre.

On that note, I'm listening to a grindcore/death metal mix that I found - I must have made this like 6 years ago.

I spent most of the morning listening to Tom Waits.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

When I'm not out tending the garden this weekend, I'm listening to many of my albums from the 1960s, including Cream, Hendrix, the Byrds, Donovan, Dylan, and a whole lot more.

While doing some repair work , Barbara Chamberlin was singing. You can hear that she loves to sing, it seems to come from her own inner emotions. I think she is a Whitehorse resident.

I can't help wondering if I'm experiencing a cultural shift - I'm 60 in October this year, and I still listen to rock 'n roll from the 50's and 60's, as do most of my baby boomer comrades. I remember my parents listening to mostly soft pop ballads from the likes of Perry Como and a lot of military bands (my dad had been a soldier in WWII and worked in the Historical Section of DND after the war). Are we Baby Boomers the first rock 'n roll pensioners, I wonder? Laughing

ps: I took early retirement on disability a few years ago.

I also just got a couple of Captain Beefheart CDs. So, next week I'm going to listen to a mix of constant zappa, waits and beefheart

al-Qa'bong

I already bought my tickets for "Zappa plays Zappa" in August.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

I saw Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa in Ottawa - 1970's I think, maybe earlier. I loved both of these bands, and also Dr. John The Night Tripper, and The Fugs. I used to be attracted to weird bands, especially in my LSD days. Innocent

Tommy_Paine

A friend of mine who used to post here was kicked out of a news conference with Frank Zappa.  My friend was reporting for the Gazzet at the time, a student paper at U.W.O.  He asked Frank about his anti-drug stance, and how it fit with his music that seemed to cater to the drug addled audience.

Frank was not amused.

Anyway.  Not listening to much these days, except old standards.

I will, however, continue to sing the praises (off key) of Randy Bachman's show on CBC radio, and now Elvis Costello's "Spectacle" on "Bravo", the artsy fartsy specialty chanel.  If you don't get that Boom Boom, some of his interviews might be available on line.

It's great stuff if you are interested in music history, and there are live preformances.

Ooops.  Coals to Newcastle, just saw your post up top.

It's a great show! I often find it's a little bit too much Elvis and not enough about his guests, but week after week he seems to profile excellent seasoned musicians and up-and-coming talent. I especially enjoyed his show with Rufus Wainwright.

I watched a 1961 Nat King Cole special shown on the BBC that year. Great voice lost all too young.
