From: No One Is Illegal:

During the recent April long-weekend, several members and allies of No One Is Illegal-Montreal noticed graffiti in various neighborhoods of the city, referring to the following website: www.flics-assassins.net ("flics assassins" means "killer cops" in English).

While we're not involved with this website, we feel it's important to share its content widely. We've included some excerpts from the website below.

We are taking the initiative to encourage all local groups to post and forward the link for this website to your networks and contact lists.

We'll let the texts below, and the photos on the site, speak for themselves. Please DON'T contact us concerning this website, but rather e-mail the contact info on the website itself. We are not involved, but simply passing on the information.

ABOUT

From the shooting death of Anthony Griffin, 19, outside a police station in NDG in 1987, to last year's death of Fredy Villaneuva, 18, at Parc Henri-Bourassa in Montreal-Nord, 43 individuals have been killed by the Montreal police.

Whether by bullets, pepper spray, electric shocks, beatings (or, in one case, running over a youth with a police car) the Service de la Police de Montréal (SPVM), have acted with impunity.

Police killings represent the most extreme form of their impunity. On a daily basis, Montreal police practice social and racial profiling, including intimidation and harassment of youth, the poor and marginalized, and visible minorities.

Recently, a group of individuals remembered the 43 police killings on the streets of Montreal, with simple graffiti in neighborhoods all over the city: from Rivières-des-Prairies to Côte-des-Neiges, from downtown to Ville St-Laurent, every single individual whose life was cut short by the Montreal police was commemorated (as well as one graffiti for the 7 people whose names are not known).

Over the next few weeks, we will also include texts and other information providing background and context to the police killings. (In particular, we will include excerpts from "D'Anthony Griffin à Mohamed Anas Bennis: Enquête sur 40 personnes tuées par la police de Montréal en 20 ans (1987-2006)" published by the Collective Opposed to Police Brutality (COBP). Please note: this website is in no way affiliated with COBP; their valuable document is widely available via public websites on the web).

This website was created by an autonomous, independent and anonymous group of Montreal residents who are outraged by police brutality and impunity. We are not affiliated with any particular group, collective or coalition. Rather, we are a modest part of ongoing efforts to counter the police offensive against our communities, in support of grassroots initiatives.

As the Montreal cops and their Fraternité (and the politicians who support them) attempt to justify police killings, deny racial profiling, derail public inquiries, and encourage measures that serve to increase police power and impunity, we stand with those who courageously and tirelessly confront police repression.

Tiré de No One Is Illegal-Montreal

Quote:
The family of Mohamed Anas Bennis has been demanding two confidential reports into the man's killing by a police constable for months, but when they were offered up Monday in Quebec Superior Court, the family's lawyer said no thanks.

Alain Arsenault argued that if the Police Brotherhood files in court reports by Quebec City police and the crown prosecutors' office, which concluded there was no wrongdoing, there may be no need for a public inquiry.

The family wants such an inquiry - announced last June by the coroner's office - while the brotherhood argues the case is closed.[...]

Bennis was shot twice by Montreal police Constable Yannick Bernier on Dec. 1, 2005, while walking home from a mosque in Côtes des Neiges. Bernier said Bennis attacked him, stabbing him in the leg and neck.

I don't understand the first 2 paragraphs of this story. Is "files in" (2nd par., line 1) a verb here?

It's poor phrasing without a good alternative - should have said, "if the Police Brotherhood files reports by Quebec City police and the crown prosecutors' office in court..."

Ironically, the Bennis family doesn't want the reports filed, because it will be used as a technical pretext by the cops to plead that there is nothing more for the public inquiry to do now.

Quote:

The family of Mohamed Anas Bennis, fatally shot by a Montreal police officer on Dec. 1, 2005, says it might boycott a coroner’s inquest into the incident because the Coroner’s Office has refused to pay for its legal fees.

Mohamed Bennis, father of the slain man, said failure to finance the family’s legal costs creates “a clear double standard” because police involved will be represented by “lawyers paid by tax dollars.”

The city of Montreal is covering the police officers’ legal fees. They are also represented by lawyers paid for by the Montreal Police Brotherhood.
