$15.5 Million: Shell Oil shells out but admits no guilt in execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa

This just in:
Shell Settles Lawsuit Over Nigerian Executions for $15.5 Million
"NEW YORK, New York, June 8, 2009 (ENS) - After legal battles lasting nearly 14 years, oil giant Royal Dutch Shell today paid a $15.5 million out-of-court settlement to plaintiffs from the Ogoni region of Nigeria. They claimed the company was complicit in human rights atrocities committed against the Ogoni people in the 1990s, including the government's 1995 execution of author and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others. While issuing a concilatory statement today, a Shell spokesman repeated the company's position that it admits no wrongdoing."

That's just standard legalese, isn't it?

I think the size of the settlement speaks for itself.

Indeed it does.

$15.5 million is the amount of profit Shell made every 5 hours 7 minutes, 24/366 in 2008.

No kidding, it is peanuts, but yet we are supposed to believe the Dutch are oh so "progressive".

Interesting fact, thanks for sharing it.  No doubt this is just the cost of doing business for Shell.
