Liberal staffer Meinzer facing more charges (sexual assault allegations)

I guess I'm puzzlied why we haven't heard about this before, or have we?

Liberal staffer Meinzer facing more charges

New sexual assault allegations emerge against former Eggleton chief of staff

Two new women have stepped forward to accuse a senior Liberal staffer of sexually assaulting them.

Robert Meinzer, who until his arrest last summer served as Senator Art Eggleton's chief of staff, sat quietly in Toronto court Monday as five new charges against him were read out.

The new charges include two counts of sexual assault, two charges of overcoming resistance by choking and one charge of criminal harassment. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in 2005 and 2007.

The women, who cannot be named, are both Ottawa residents.

Meinzer, 39, is already accused of nine offences relating to an alleged rape and extortion that occurred last summer -- including breaking and entering, assault, forcible confinement, sexual assault, choking, assault with a weapon, extortion and anal intercourse

Wow, I guess the media is keeping this silent!!!

johnpauljones

The media has been all over this story. what is interesting is that alleged sexual assaults and alleged rapes and i say alleged because well no convictions yet. But the stories have hit both the libs and cons equally.

Not out here in BC, that I have noticed anyway.

No convictions mean FA, if that many women have come forward.

How has this Meinzer case impacted the Cons?

johnpauljones

remind this week 2 members of the barrie pc association were charged with gang rape

NorthReport

Thanks for clearing that up for us jpj.

remind remind's picture

What is one supposed to infer from that jpj?

johnpauljones

infer from it Remind? no idea

the op stated that the media had not been covering the story in ottawa. not totally correct since the media at lest msm in ontario has not only reported the story in Ottawa but also a "similar" story in Barrie

remind remind's picture

hmmmm..the only thing I see similar about them is male privilege at work, and lack of national reporting.

johnpauljones

and I see scum who associate themselves with slimey politicians :-)

remind, I'm not opposed to the media taking care when reporting allegations that have not been proven in court.  We may think that where there's smoke there must be fire, but that's not a principle I want encoded in our legal system.

remind remind's picture

The principal I want encoded in our legal system is that 1 woman's word, equals 1 man's words.

And though I say that, when so many women have the courage to come out, I will side with them each and every time and not with the alleged men.

Also, I was not speaking of media taking care, I was speaking of them not reporting it at all out here. Moreover, I can tell you, if it was not  attached to the Liberal and Conservative political parties, the media would be all over it.

johnpauljones

interesting and I was thinking the opposite that the only reason we have had any reporting on these stories is because they are tied to the liberal party and conservative party

remind remind's picture

We get all sorts of back east reporting out here all the time, except not in these 2 cases. If I had not read about them at babble and elsewhere, I would never have heard about them.

For example, last night's news from back east, was busy carrying on about the girl who allegedly sexually exploited her boyfriend, so he would kill her rivial.

Hi remind.  For me the best way to follow news like that is National Newswatch, hands down.  That guys works super-fast, has sources from across the spectrum who send him good links from both the MSM and blogosphere, and puts a lot of fun stuff into it too.  He works from Halifax (which means he gets an earlier start than the rest of us), and has a background in journalism rather than politics.  I don't remember how I followed the news before that site came along!

Thanks OO, I am soooo excited! :)

I googled Meizner's name, and it seems to me there was coverage of this back in August of last year, in all major Canadian news outlets.   And, I think it's the same kind of coverage these kind of allegations get no matter who the accused is.  Rather unscientific, I know.  Just seems to me.

What does seem to be missing is any discussion concerning, given the nature of the charges, whether Meizner should have been granted bail.  My superficial glance at reasons why bail may be denied seems to provide room to argue both ways.

But no one is arguing, at least not in the news stories.

Or here.

Oh that it explains it, I was busy last August and tunedout. ;)
