Here you go, Unionist!

Unionist

Thank you!

Upon learning that scientists have decided to add a "leap second" this evening (thus delaying the onset of the new year in half the world), Ken Burch commented:

Ken Burch wrote:

An absolute classic, in response to RP's tingling spidey-sense that the current Conservative reign of terror was somehow 'planned'...

Cueball wrote:

What do you mean? Planned?

I personally think the abuse of administrative power to repress political dissent is a natural and almost accidental outcome that results in the aftermath of a coup, such as the one we just had in December where the reigning government manipulated the vestiges of monarchal power inherently vested in the office of the Head of State in order to cancel democratic process until the time as a more pliant leader of the opposition could be installed.

So, I am going to disagree with you there, and sharply, because I am not of the sort who is particularly beholden to the mastermind kind of conspiracy theory that requires absolute foresight and the power to act with total accuracy, but more one who sees the invisible hand of greed and power and ideological conviction coalescing as a tendency that forms in a discrete and incremental process that only appears clearly as tyranny in hindsight.

That said I think you are onto something in a general sense: Yes indeed RP, that thing you are seeing in the corner of your eye is indeed an elephant.

This thread is not intended as a regular thread where you can engage in your usual chaotic ramblings, and your personal vendettas. It is not meant to be a potpuri of nonsense.

This thread is for posting quotes that you like from other Babblers, not arguing whatever point you think you have. The thread in question is still open, and you can respond to the linked quote there. You are not only trolling but derailling.

Erik Redburn

Please don't tell me about MY personal vendettas Cueball, when you posted this for exactly that reason.  I thought it was really quite funny, but like most real humour it reflects on reality as it is rather than how we might want it.  You are right about one thing, lets take this to a more appropriate venue.

Lord Palmerston

Here's one from M. Spector:

Quote:
Anyway, what makes you think you can have it both ways? You want to argue that the NDP would lose support if it campaigned for a single secular system because the voters want to keep funding separate schools, but just in case you're wrong, you want to argue the opposite - that even if the majority of the voters oppose the funding of separate schools they wouldn't vote NDP anyway.

Of course, if your only goal is to get elected, and principles don't matter, you can tailor your election campaign solely according to opinion polls. Instead of taking principled positions and defending them to the voters, you just promise to do whatever the opinion polls tell you the majority of the voters want. Instead of leading, you follow. And you end up being just another opportunistic capitalist party with no principles.

Lord Palmerston

And from Cueball:

Quote:
Let's cut to the chase here. This isn't about about the occassional math teacher who blurts out some opinion that someone doesn't approve of. This is about hauling up sociology and poli sci professors up in front of public tribunals where their opinions can be vilified, because some student, without the benefit of any kind of degree, gets to decide that the professor is showing "too much bias", or is anti-semetic or some such. It's about black listing and gag laws, and student ideologues running around universities having an officially sanctioned podium to denounce the opinions of their professors, outside of the class room, and act designed to threaten their employment and make all kinds of accussations and smears, some of which will do damage to reputation, whether proved or not.

Oh ya, and this gem.  Fidel may have his blind spots but I don't see them being so different than yours quite frankly and at least he has something of substance to add on occasion.  This section shouldn't be used for attacking other members here, I'd flag this one but I still believe in challenging others one to one.  It wasn't even that funny boyo but I can't blame Unionist for this.

al-Qa'bong

Why even consider blaming Unionist?  Someone else thought him quoteworthy, which is why that remark was posted here.

I don't why this thread is being considered as an appropriate venue for arguing vendettas. It is for notable quotes.

I agree.  This is a place where people can aknowledge what they see as a particularly powerful witty or clever turn of a phrase on the part of another babbler.  Hell, you can even do your own if you think you just didn't get all the recognition you deserved first time around.

This is an entertainment thread.  Please do not start battles anew here, or use it as an opportunity for one last jab.

You agree with Them?  I seriously hope you would reconsider this because using this forum for attacking other Babblers in the third person is not only NOt "witty" or "powerful", but a rather gutless and underhanded tactic and an open invitation for more junior high level kind of hazing.   This kind of thing is why I thought that such things as opening a thread devoted to attacking another personally was a violation of the rules here, this is only slightly different IMV, not at all in spirit.   And before you make another decision like this I'd appreciate if you asked the other sides story first before making up your mind, I have no "vendetta" against anyone, thats just Cueball maniplating the situation to his pown advantage.   If you go back over our posts since I came back here you will see that he has been the one stalking and baiting me, not visa versa, vso I have generally ignored him.  I have made only one negative comment to Unionist to what I thought was an totally unfair yet rather typical comment Re the NDP, and exactly zero to Lord Palmerston.

It's about the "turn of phrase" not the content. If you want to continue the debate, if there is one, simply go to the original thread and think up something pithy. This is where people post what they think are gems of commentary, not a discussion thread.

If you don't like it take it to rabble reactions, or something.

I have an idea, the mods could move the excess discussion content from this thread and move it to a thread in Rabble Reactions, and save this thread from being derailed.

Erik Redburn

I guess it depends on what you consider a vendetta Unionist.  I strongly disagree with both you and Cueball on some issues but i don't stalk around looking to confront either of you.  And a good sense of humour of course also means having a sense of what's Not funny. Thank you.

Cueball, you are not a moderator, so please stop snickering behind the teachers dress and MYOB ok?   You get way too much slack here as it is.  Now. I will wait to see what if anything more Oldgoat has to say, as I stand by my complaint, but will leave it for another more appropriate forum.

Cueball Cueball's picture

I raised an issue with your continued destruction of this thread by carrying over arguements you want to make against quotes here, and indeed persons here, endlessly like a dog with a bone. I and a few others made this complaint and asked you nicely to stop. I am familliar enough with the boards traditions and history to give you good advice on where best to lodge your complaint against the moderators decision, and I offered it as a means for you to debate the decision without further derailing this thread with your derailments.

Now, despite the moderation, you continue with your derailment by arguing the point of the moderation, against good advice about where you can properly lodge your complaint, and not further derail this thread. But you insist.

If you think I get to much slack take it up with the mods.

Erik Redburn

Show me where I have gone after Lord Palmerston before, Ie, "like a dog with bone", who was the one I was criticising here.  If you cannot, which you can't, then I can only assume you are the one using this as an excuse to get at Me.  Again.    And please don't tell me to shut up when your the one who keeps at me.  That is the very definition of hypocracy.  If you want this to end then STFU yourself.  I will gladly walk away otherwise and take it up with the mods instead, as you suggest.

Unionist, I never meant to imply that you aren't of course a brilliant comedian most nights.  That goes without question surely --and I'm not just writing that just because youre a mod now...   My own always good humour doesn't often usually translate well online, alas, I think it has something to do with the absense of timing and teleprompter.

Why we need more Fidel. Here he is, telling it like it is to a world that won't look for themselves:

Fidel wrote:

The truth is that rightwing neoliberal ideologues in Canada's two old line parties abandoned price controls, wage controls, government-created money and export tariffs  some time ago. It's a one size fits all sledge hammer today known as jigging interest rates. The idea behind the neoliberalorama is to hand as much control of Canada's economic decision making as they can over to people who no one ever votes for, like banksters, globo money speculators and foreign bondholders, transnational and even "supranational" corporations. Like I was trying to tell someone in another thread, this isnt the same country that it was when Tommy Douglas and the CCF ruled Saskatchewan. It's not even the same country it was when PET drank of the neoliberal KoolAid by 1984. We basically have maybe a few thousand superrich and powerful people around the world dictating economic agendas and money policies in western countries. And none of them ever run for political office. Political power has become just another commodity for capitalists.

I like Jack. He did his doctoral thesis on global capital flows. He's way more clever about these things than stooges Chretien and Martin and herr Harper could ever hope to be. We can have the kind of populist policies for higher employment and competitive green economies of the future instead of the current state of rust and disrepair. We just gotta vote in an NDP government federally for the once in 140 years. But if you actually prefer to hand powers of resource allocation and essentially how the country is run over to superrich people, foreigners, TNC's, and people you never voted for, then make damned good and sure not to vote NDP.

The only "genocidal trade embargo" I can think of, today, is directed at a dispossessed people. The only one aimed at a nation, in recent memory, was against Iraq, although the tightening of the Cuba embargo in the 90s was intended to cause death and suffering to those people. It mostly failed.

There are some wonderful threads on babble. Most have to do with philosophy or ideas not immediately tainted by politics. A poster above suggests discourse on babble is endemic to the medium. I disagree. Listen to talk radio, cable news, read the newspapers. The discourse on babble is endemic to North American society. Babble merely reflects those who come here.

Our political discourse, as a society, has been dumbed down to talking points, ad hominen attacks, strawman arguments, and smearing the personality and character of the opponent. We no longer have debates but verbal slugfests. And it can't be avoided because once the mud starts flying everyone and everything is covered.

In part this is because the tactics of Madison Ave. have been turned to politics. You don't have to refute arguments from a communist. You don't have to address criticisms from anti-semites. You don't have to entertain the thoughts of this group of that group. You don't have to address the meat if you can create your own sizzle.

The dumbing down of debate and discussion to where we all choose a color and defend our team, right or wrong, is rendering us all stupid and anti-social. Why do people leave babble? Because you can't have a conversation.

We have become a society of tolerance and I don't mean that in a good way. I don't mean we have become tolerant of different peoples, and ideas, and diversity. Rather, we have become tolerant of rudeness, ignorance, stupidity, narcissism, egotism, selfishness and obliviousness. In our society we can engage in any activity no matter how intrusive, disruptive, and destructive if we can afford the cost of admission.

The result is we share a sense of entitlement and privilege unmatched in modern and ancient history. Yes, we must be tolerant of every opinion no matter how stupid, and we must tolerate every jackass no matter how offensive so long as he or she does not cross the line to besmirch the designated holy cows.

I think the moderators are far too tolerant. Even with me. The success of the board should not be measured by the quantity of the posters but the quality of the discussion.

Bravo FM!!

And that's the new neoliberalised banking and business model today: throw as many people into a debt hole as they can. Debt equals wealth is their new plan, and public debt is of the highest quality with regard to the new wealth creation model. Some say Harper is middle of the road Keynesian with taking on more debt in the middle of what is a western world debt crisis. Nothing could be further from the truth, because the name of the game today is public debt with tens of millions of co-signers as collateral now that the wheels have fallen off the neoliberalorama. It's like our stooges have admitted they no real plan and no way out of this mess, and so theyre going to mortgage Canada's future because they have no plan and no new ideas.

Babbler "genstrike" addresses the left and the right in the (Manitoba) NDP and poses an interesting question:

Quote:
I wonder, if people on the right of the party like Doer are able to demand loyalty from the left while treating them like shit, is Ashton allowed to do the same to the right if he wins?

This reminds me a little of the fictional (British) Labour Party leader, Harry Perkins, who remarked on defeating the Tories: "Now it's your turn to go to hell!" When the shoe is on the other foot, somehow the same principles often don't apply.
