Woo! Hoo! Welcome to the Democratic Party of Canada

"It's true that we mostly refer to "les libéraux" or "les conservateurs". In writing, however, the parties are not unfrequently referred to using their three-letter acronyms, "PLC" and "PCC" (those parties' names are officially composed of three words, unlike the Parti québécois, for instance). "

So, if that's the case, if the NDP became the Democratic Party of Canada the in French it would be Parti democratique du Canada and would be referred to as "PDC" - so what's the problem?

Honestly, one of the worse things about the NDP is the party's penchant for endless navel-gazing. All things being equal, I'd like to just have a really quick up and down vote to drop the word New and become the Democratic Party of Canada PERIOD. Get it over with and then never have to endure any more discussion about what the party's name ought to be. I think dropping "New" is a good idea - but only if it can be done really quickly and with as little discussion as possible - its not worth the effort if it means unleashing a never-ending process of navel gazing.

There is now poll on rabble's front page, asking whether you want the NDP to keep the same name, change it to "Democratic Party", or change it to something else.

Unfortunately, they didn't include a "New Obamawannabe Party" option... :D

I don't really care what happens (although objectively, I think "Parti démocratique" tout court would probably be ill-advised)—I've voted NDP in the last federal election (Outremont riding) but I don't have the slightest (emotional or otherwise) investment in the party. I was just rectifying some inaccuracies.

And besides, I'm absolutely positive that ALL of the Liberal and Tory Party voters across Canada will not mistake the the Democratic Party as a fresh new alternative to the same-old same-old party their parents and grandparents voted for decade after decade, and mark an X beside the Democratic Party candidate next election. At least,  I'm pretty sure of it.  Wink

How about the "Bloc canadien"?

True but I think the hope is they will think it is a off shot of the Obama party.  It is great branch plant thinking.

The NDP has an image problem and I suggest a complete makeover.

For new colours, I suggest black and white with no shades of grey.
Their symbol should be a big exclamation point!
It doesn't matter what their policies are as long as they can yell louder than everybody else!
Serious scientific studies by maket researchers and focus groups have proven that they should call themselves "The People's Reactionary Front"!
If they do all this their voice will flood the whole country like a tidal wave and they will turn Canada upside-down.

Not so fast with this "Democratic" party name.  As the "Democracy Party of Canada", we've been working towards registration for a few years, will be running candidates (as Independents, if we're not registered in time), have trademarked all our brands, etc.
While I'd enjoy taking on the NDP, or Democratic Party, and let Canadian voters decide who means "democracy" the most, it might just be a little confusing.
If you want to help us obtain registration, and bring a democratic reform agenda (ie. neither left nor right, but whatever Canadian voters want) to federal politics, check us out.

Are you an official Obama franchise too?

The centre-left gets sort of crowded with the approach of an NDP convention.  Kibitzing and popcorn gains the ascendancy out in the bleachers.

Branch plant economy since FTA-NAFTA thanks.

And if only we had the same small amount of daylight between our two mainstream parties that exists in Warshington, it would be revolutionary as far as Canadians are concerned.

I think the NDP should become the Democratic Party and the Liberals can then rename themselves the Blue Dog Party - since they are exactly like the Blue Dog faction of the Democrats in the US.

As Stockholm has said, so shall it be written!
