"Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields." - "In Flanders Fields" by Lieutenant Colonel John McRae, 1915.

"GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstacy of fumbling,

Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;

But someone still was yelling out and stumbling

And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--

Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light

As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,

He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace

Behind the wagon that we flung him in,

And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,

His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;

If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood

Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,

Obscene as cancer, bitter as cud

Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--

My friend, you would not tell with such high zest

To children ardent for some desperate glory,

The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est

Pro patria mori." - "Dulce et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori" by Second Lieutenant Wilfred Owen, 1918.

Both Wifred Owen and John McRae died in World War I.

Both Stephen Harper and Peter MacKay have stated that by 2011, Canadian troops will withdraw from Kandahar province and will concentrate their efforts in Kandahar City. Can you say Dien Bien Phu, Khe Sanh?

"The spectacular attacks [in Kabul] may distract from a greater danger down south, according to a number of Afghanistan watchers, who warn of the possibility of a Taliban takeover of Kandahar city."

Here's another interesting bit of information: "The Helmand offensive was planned in advance long before the new Afghan commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, took over."

Obama's Unspoken Trade-Off: Dead NATO Troops Vs Dead Afghan Civilians

http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=14849

"Enter Barack Obama. Faced with the prospect of NATO forces being withdrawn as restless NATO country citizens mobilized against the war, the Obama war machine took the decision to trade-off mostly lower class "volunteer" soldiers from rural America for fewer rural Afghan civilians killed. The decision had nothing to do with valuing Afghan lives and everything to do wiht a careful political calculation.."

"Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Special Envoy Richard Holbrooke recently called Vietnam War historian Stanley Karnow for advice. After the conversation, Karnow told the AP that the main lesson to be learned from Vietnam was that 'we shouldn't have been there in the first place.'"

"A 21-year-old Navajo soldier killed in Afghanistan was described by his mother as someone who made everyone smile and his father remembered him as an outgoing man with an interest in the outdoors and art."
