According to the story, there are an estimated 27 million slaves today. That includes over 10,000 in the USA. But India tops the list, with debt bondage having a multi-generational quality to it. Some are slaves their whole lives for a debt that preceded their birth.
It also depends on percentages. Shear numbers aren't always a good measure. By that standard we have the largest serf population of some 6 billion people. while we have about 100 million lords. A number that would put to shame even the most tyranical of times. Though we do have a lot of "freemen" we are all bound to toil for others so that we may feed ourselves.
