What Are You Listening To? (Rexdale Edition lol)
No Line on the Horizon U2
No battle R_P......I don't have much hip hip. Just Ice-T (old school Ice-T) and a lot of R & B.
Been listening to Girls Against Boys - the entire catalogue...
Plus, the amazing Dr.Draw!
Picked up Matisyahu's new album yesterday. For those who don't know him, he's a hasidic reggae artist, which sounds like a weird novelty but is actually really cool stuff. A couple years ago, I saw him play a tiny little show in the Old City of Jerusalem and then he took a bunch of us out to smoke a hookah and drink beer at the apartment he had rented. He signed my CD (in Hebrew) with the inscription "Moshiach Now! - Matis". Pretty cool.

[Intro]
Oh, my, god. Becky, look at her butt.
It is so big. *scoff* She looks like,
one of those rap guys' girlfriends.
But, you know, who understands those rap guys? *scoff*
They only talk to her, because,
she looks like a total prostitute, 'kay?
I mean, her butt, is just so big.
I can't believe it's just so round, it's like,
out there, I mean - gross. Look!
She's just so ... black!
[Sir Mix-a-Lot]
I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh baby, I wanna get with you
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that butt you got makes me so horny
Ooh, Rump-o'-smooth-skin
You say you wanna get in my Benz?
Well, use me, use me
'Cause you ain't that average groupie
I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
She's sweat, wet,
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
So, fellas! (Yeah!) Fellas! (Yeah!)
Has your girlfriend got the butt? (Hell yeah!)
Tell 'em to shake it! (Shake it!) Shake it! (Shake it!)
Shake that healthy butt!
Baby got back!
(LA face with Oakland booty)
Baby got back!
[Sir Mix-a-Lot]
I like 'em round, and big
And when I'm throwin' a gig
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
Now here's my scandal
I wanna get you home
And ugh, double-up, ugh, ugh
I ain't talkin' bout Playboy
'Cause silicone parts are made for toys
I want 'em real thick and juicy
So find that juicy double
Mix-a-Lot's in trouble
Beggin' for a piece of that bubble
So I'm lookin' at rock videos
Knock-kneeded bimbos walkin' like hoes
You can have them bimbos
I'll keep my women like Flo Jo
A word to the thick soul sisters, I wanna get with ya
I won't cuss or hit ya
But I gotta be straight when I say I wanna *fuck*
Till the break of dawn
Baby got it goin' on
A lot of simps won't like this song
'Cause them punks like to hit it and quit it
And I'd rather stay and play
'Cause I'm long, and I'm strong
And I'm down to get the friction on
So, ladies! {Yeah!} Ladies! {Yeah}
If you wanna roll in my Mercedes {Yeah!}
Then turn around! Stick it out!
Even white boys got to shout
Baby got back!
Baby got back!
Yeah, baby ... when it comes to females, Cosmo ain't got nothin'
to do with my selection. 36-24-36? Ha ha, only if she's 5'3".
[Sir Mix-a-Lot]
So your girlfriend rolls a Honda, playin' workout tapes by Fonda
But Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda
My anaconda don't want none
Unless you've got buns, hun
You can do side bends or sit-ups,
But please don't lose that butt
Some brothers wanna play that "hard" role
And tell you that the butt ain't gold
So they toss it and leave it
And I pull up quick to retrieve it
So Cosmo says you're fat
Well I ain't down with that!
'Cause your waist is small and your curves are kickin'
And I'm thinkin' bout stickin'
To the beanpole dames in the magazines:
You ain't it, Miss Thing!
Give me a sister, I can't resist her
Red beans and rice didn't miss her
Some knucklehead tried to dis
'Cause his girls are on my list
He had game but he chose to hit 'em
And I pull up quick to get wit 'em
So ladies, if the butt is round,
And you want a triple X throw down,
Dial 1-900-MIXALOT
And kick them nasty thoughts
Baby got back!
(Little in the middle but she got much back) [4x]
Man, did we really need Sir Mixalot?
I'm listening to an MC Frontalot comp right now.

NERD - Rockstar
I saw them recently at Virgin Fest (ewwww, I know, but I wanted to see NIN's last T.dot gig, not to mention the Pixies) and my god, NERD puts on one helluva set. Two drummers, the DJ, several vocalists, a couple of guitarists, a guy on synths, it was loud and bumptacular.
Also, on mention of the Pixies, I got really close to tracking down a copy of one of their albums on vinyl (I'm becoming more and more audiophilic) but my friend managed to snatch it up before I could. Pity he works at the store. ;(
Lightning Hopkins - live in LA - 1966 - on Wolfgang's Vault. I saw him in a small club in Ann Arbor, Michigan about 5 years later. A wow moment.
Fuck U2 - I saw K'naan tonight. Absolutely incredible. Way better live than in studio - and his recordings are pretty damned good.
Big Joe Williams, Baby Please Don't Go
Ted Nugent's cover of that song is one of a handfull by him I find listenable.
I am so stuck in a rut, music wise. I was even thinking about searching for my Foghat cd to listen to in the van.
Foghat, people.
I need help.
Anyway, I was listening to an interview with Michael Franti on CBC radio last week, and was entertained to learn that Franti claims to only listen to about 12 songs a year. He gets a song on his Ipod and listens to it over and over and over and over.
While I'm not quite so intent as that, I'm not unlike that at all. I like listening to a song that catches my fancy, and I listen to it over and over, trying to understand why I like that song. So, first few times through, I might listen to the whole song. Next few times I might mentally isolate the vocals. Next time, percussion, then lead guitar, rythm guitar and base.
Was listening to some AC/DC just yesterday, isolating the base, and man, does Cliff Williams ever suck.

Laundry Day (My Freeze Ray)
Listening now to some Drum n Bass from DJ Dara (thanks Amsterdam!)
Prior - Deadboy and the Elephantmen (Dax Riggs is the best singer ever!)
Call me old-fashioned, but I just enjoyed Peace Train again for the 2,000th time over the past few decades.
(Dax Riggs is the best singer ever!)
Stargazer, I don't normally like spelling flames, but I think you spelled Neil Patrick Harris incorrectly.
Ella's "How High the Moon," live in Berlin in 1960.

hahahaha. Who is Neil Patrick Harris? The second best singer is John Garcia of Kyuss fame. Bow down!
I caught part of a Pete Seeger tribute on PBS last night. Excellent watching him sing with his grandson and Arlo Guthrie at Carnegie hall.

He is two kinds of doctor. Doctor Horrible - super villain. As well as Doogie Howser, MD.
I knew I recognized the name. I take it you don`t like Deadboy and the ElephantmenÉ I love those dreamy, bluesy bands from Layfayette. (my spell check isn`t working and my question marks are now E`s. ÉÉÉÉÉ

I don't actually know those bands/artists. I've been on a bit of a classics kick.
Classics are great. Recently been trying to reconnect with the whole stoner rock movement. Causa de Sul and so on. Great psychedilca with heavy guitar.
here is Dax singing. Let me know what you think.

why no posts in this thread no more?
why no posts in this thread no more?
Well, because I'm an uncool dinosaur, music wise, and it's better I read than write here. :)
I'm thinking that, going back years and years ago, if Pat Boone or Lawrence Welk did an interview about how much they got and understood The Clash, I would have thought that there was something wrong with The Clash. Not every type of music is written for everyone to get. With this in mind, RP, it's probably a good thing for your music that I don't totally get it.
I'm curious though, how does the music you posted make you feel?
the music posted makes me feel the same way I normally am. Im listening to shit that I feel not shit that I dont already. Itz why ppl are like I feel this shit or something. As in manz arent being influenced by the music, they livin a lot of it, and to them its just somebody else telling their story idk about white kids being influenced by hiphop but here u grow up with the shit happening anyway you dont need music to tell u what u look, see, live and hear all around u.
Its fucced up, but thats how the communitys gwanin like. And its not a AmeriKKKan thing theres hood in nuff countries a lot of 3rd world countries got pure slums too. Esp like south ameriKKka and the caribbean because theyre 3rd world countries that fucced around with by AmeriKKKa and also because they have more urban slums so shit is easier to film, see up close, etc.
A lot of other places just have a bunch of poor villages and theres war and everything too.
So that musics repping me, where Im from, and who I am. The Real question is how does it make you and pure other ppl like you on here and elsewhere feel?
(and say w.e ur actually feeling even if u think its wierd,w.e u think open shit on that too).
but, ur saying u dont really get the music? Like u mean understand whats bein talked about, or what do u mean by that.
(btw the thing to replace the i in shit is always opening up quicc find in firefox and wont let me type it in on this problem unique to bable).
I tend to like movie theme music. Something about the visual connecting with the audio makes for an overall lasting impression for me. I'm thinking of Somewhere My Love from Dr. Zhivago, the wintery scenes, wolves howling in the wind, the famous ice house scene, and the characters who held hope dear no matter what distances and circumstances came between them. And, Lara!
That's a good question, to turn it around and ask how it makes me feel, RP. Because I like the idea of music that reflects the living reality-- it's one of the reasons I can't stand most if not all commercial radio, and why I have, perhaps at times, an overbearing disdain for current pop offerings. Or why I like older folk tunes that, at one time, represented a certain reality.
However, because I don't have your experience, I don't have a clue what's authentic, and what, as I said in another thread, is being marketed as authentic to a white teenage male urban audience.
But, with you as my guide to authenticity, I'll return to how it makes me feel. Regretfull, mostly. I regret not being able to understand the lingo a good part of the time. I want to hear it, but I can't keep up with the words. And, I just don't like it on a musical level. Above, Fidel mentions the theme to Dr. Zhivago. It's art, it's musically good, but I just don't like it. Hiphop is sort of like Mozart to me-- there's just no Beethovenesque summing up from time to time, or Rossini like crescendo to finish where the music has taken you, similar to Jimmy Page building to a power chord after a extemporaneous guitar solo.
Hiphop is powerfull stuff, but the music doesn't make me feel the power.
One of the very few current artist I like is Micheal Franti. I think I get his stuff because the words and the music do sinq up for me.
Last night I listened to Pete Seeger and Brother Kirk visit Sesame Street. Picked it up for 50cents at a yard sale on Saturday.
I just started listening to this band called The Antlers out of Brooklyn. They have an album out called Hospice that is fucking beautiful and heartbreaking and my pick for album of the year. www.myspace.com/theantlers
At the moment I'm listening to Soupy Sales trying to tune the new ukulele he's just requested.
*sigh* Eternity is going to be a VERY long time.
This morning I was listening to Billy Bragg doing Way Over Yonder in the Minor Key on CBC with Captain Claw as his audience.
Rolling Stones - Emotional Rescue
One of their last great albums. As mature as these bad boys were ever going to get, but not too old to rock & roll yet.
