Bingo! US Donors Fund Illegal Jewish Settlements

"an unknown number of North Americans have settled in the West Bank and Jerusalem since Israel occupied the territories in 1967 and retain dual citizenship. Middle East historian Juan Cole wrote that an estimated one third of West Bank settlers are "Americans" [how many Canadians?]

Lover of the Country
ON THE morrow of the Six-day War, Amos Kenan came to my editorial office. He was in a state of shock. As a reserve soldier, he had just witnessed the emptying of three villages in the Latrun area. Men and women, old people and children, had been driven out in the burning June sun on a foot march in the direction of Ramallah, dozens of kilometers away. It reminded him of sights from the Holocaust.

Critically thinking Israelis - a negligible minority - already know the pattern: no matter how extreme our new prime minister is, it won't take more than a couple of months for the media to portray him as the sane, moderate, and pragmatic leader of the political center. If even the warrior General Sharon could be reborn as "a Man of Peace," why can't Netanyahu? The landmark was his "Bar Ilan Speech" of June 14, after which mainstream Israeli columnists, lead by the pathetic Ari Shavit (Ha'aretz) and his lowbrow twin brother Ya'ir Lapid (Yedioth Achronot), all resorted to ludicrous narratives of Rebirth, Revolution, and Rubicon for the allegedly new leader of peace-loving Israel.

I know I sound like a broken record, but in all this is there any sign of an Israeli resistance?

In any case, to my ears "Israeli Resistance" is an oxymoron.  Even Gush Shalom is composed of Zionists, so who are they to say anything about the foreign occupation of Palestine?

you're right the thread title is not right - next one would be better called 'Resisting Israel'

Israel has recently been putting up more obstacles for foreign nationals who enter the country if they have family, work, business or academic ties in the West Bank. It now restricts their movements to "the Palestinian Authority only." The people concerned are citizens of countries that have diplomatic ties with Israel, mainly Western countries.

Forty Palestinians from the Gaza Strip were incarcerated in Israel Prison Service facilities during Operation Cast Lead at the beginning of this year, and 21 are still in prison. That's a very small number, compared to the many hundreds the Israel Defense Forces arrested in Gaza, and as compared with the hundreds who were transferred for interrogation to various detention facilities in Israel before being released.

Posting mistake.

CMOT Dibbler

Did any Israelis resist?

Alright.

The Israeli peace camp is in bad shape. A lot of the most prominent  peace activists in the "holy land"(and I absolutely refuse to put Gush Shalom in this category) are not actually pro-Palestinian. They may view a two state solution as strategically necessary, but at when the rubber hits the road, many of the  most visible Israeli opponents of greater Israel(Tom Segev, Akiva Eldar, David Grossman etc) seem to view Palestinian Arabs as childlike and inconsequential. Even the most good hearted anti occupation crusaders, like Uri Avnery, seem extremely conflicted about Israel's character.

On the other hand, every activist, from Mahatma Gandhi to Karl Marx to Che Guevara, had flaws.

Gandhi wanted to help untouchables, but refused to overturn the caste system, Karl Marx was a self hating Jew and an anti-Semite, and Che was a communist fanatic. These men weren't perfect, but they did  do good things. So I ask you, is it more important that the members of Gush Shalom are cooked to anti-imperialist perfection in Emma Goldman's anarchist oven, or is it just important that they help, regardless of their ideological shortcomings?

I'm also worried about anti-Semitism. Condemning one Israeli Jew as a racist is alright. Condemning a hundred is reasonable. Condemning four thousand is acceptable, but 4 million? You can't tell me that every single Israeli Jew is a reptilian racist with claws that bite and catch. That isn't right, it isn't accurate, and if I embraced that kind of thinking, I would become a fully fledged balls to the wall anti Semite and I'm not prepared to do that.

I'm very, very sorry, and I hope you will forgive me, but the thread stays open.

Whose Acre?
THE ANCIENT port of Acre is now the object of a fierce battle. The Arab inhabitants of the town want the port to bear the name of an Arab hero, Issa al Awam, a general under Saladin, the Muslim leader who defeated the Crusaders. The municipality of Acre, which of course is dominated by the Jewish inhabitants, has decided to give the port the name of an Israeli functionary.

You could say this same of any first world activist who opposes bloodshed in the Middle East. I mean, we're all benefiting from it, right?   We get oil for everything, and the arabs die, screaming. Fucked up situation. Who are we to reject the violence that maintains our standard of living. We are all hypocrites and bastards.

You know, I think you're right about the thread titles.  When Germany was occupying Poland in World War 2, we didn't call the Armia Krajowa the German Resistance, it is called the Polish Resistance.  So it is only right that it be "All hail the Palestinian resistance" - the resistance should be named after the people resisting occupation, not the occupiers.

Tutu's Prayer

HOW MUCH did the boycott of South Africa actually contribute to the fall of the racist regime? This week I talked with Desmond Tutu about this question, which has been on my mind for a long time.

No one is better qualified to answer this question than he. Tutu, the South African Anglican archbishop and Nobel prize laureate, was one of the leaders of the fight against apartheid and, later, the chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission which investigated the crimes of the regime. This week he visited Israel with the "Elders", an organization of elder statesmen from all over the world set up by Nelson Mandela.

Mohammed Sabawi, 65, could have played a leading role in all the stories about the economic revival in the West Bank's cities. His goal of "strengthening the economy of Palestine by utilizing its own capabilities" sounds like Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's vision of "economic peace." In recent months, however, the Palestinian-Canadian businessman has been considering reducing his business activity here, after Israel started limiting his freedom of movement and that of his son and business partner, Khaled. The Sabawis are considering Cyprus as an alternate location.

The decision by Fatah's Sixth Congress that the movement is sticking to negotiations as a means of achieving independence, statehood and peace is an admission that the use of arms during the second intifada was disastrous. That is a difficult admission for a movement founded on the sanctification of the armed struggle. And despite being tacit, it is a brave admission for Fatah at a time when most Palestinians are convinced that Israel does not want peace.

The Israel Defense Forces' military advocate general (MAG) has directed the Military Police's investigative unit to look into eight complaints of alleged abuse of detainees and violence toward Gazans during Operation Cast Lead, Haaretz has learned from the IDF Spokesman's Office. Four of the cases under investigation were filed by the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI). Out of a total of 100 complaints made by various local and foreign entities received by the IDF, the MAG has decided to open what it calls a general investigation of "more than 20 incidents," according to the spokesman's office.

The PCATI filed its first complaint to the MAG, Brig. Gen. Avichai Mandelblit, on January 19; the three subsequent complaints were sent in the last week of April. The committee's attorneys have met with 14 of the 40 Gazans arrested during the course of Operation Cast Lead. Nineteen of the 40 have already been released, including A.K., on whose behalf the committee submitted its first complaint.

Sven Ouzman, a 39-year-old archaeologist from South Africa, violated the terms of his "Palestinian Authority only" visa six times, when unintentionally and for lack of choice, he drove on roads under full Israeli control, between Palestinian Authority enclaves in the West Bank.

Ouzman, who was attending a conference of the World Archaeological Congress in Ramallah last month, was late for a lecture he was scheduled to deliver on the evening of August 9. He had arrived at the Allenby Bridge crossing on Saturday morning, August 8, after having passed through passport control on the Jordanian side and entering the Israeli-controlled area, but the Israel Airport Authority employees demanded he come back the next day. When he asked them why, "they were very rude and would not reply," Ouzman said this week by phone from South Africa.

The question is not why Norway divested from the defense electronics giant Elbit Systems, but why only now, and why only from that company? The country that gave the name of its capital city to what the world thought of as a peace process is still invested in companies involved in construction and development in the West Bank settlements - the principal factor in destroying any chance for peace (at least any peace other than the belligerent demand that the Palestinians say "thank you" for what Israel is willing to give them).

Death in the Samouni compound

The Samouni family of Gaza has, to its great misfortune, become one of the best-known families in the world, one that is identified more than any other with the January 2009 onslaught on Gaza. Twenty-nine members of the family were killed on January 4 and 5, the first two days of the ground assault. Two of them, about which this reporter wrote two weeks ago - Atiyeh and his 4-year-old son Ahmed - were killed in their home; 21 were killed in a single building at the same time, and another six were killed separately, in different circumstances.

TODAY IS the 1196th day in captivity for the soldier Gilad Shalit.

A prisoner of war must not be left in captivity. A wounded soldier must not be left in the field. The state signs an unwritten contract with every person who joins the army, and most definitely with everyone who serves in a combat unit.

The behavior of the Israeli governments in these 1196 days, of the politicians and the generals who are responsible for this outrage, is a violation of this contract, a betrayal of trust. In short: an infamy. It enrages and infuriates every decent person, and not only combat soldiers.
