Jane Fonda backs down on BDS

Jane Fonda has re-thought her position and now seems to regret signing the Toronto TIFF petition.

amazing from the article in the first post

Quote:
signed the letter without reading it carefully enough, without asking myself if some of the wording wouldn't exacerbate the situation rather than bring about constructive dialogue.

now Jane Fonda has never ever run away from a stance no matter what public opinion was in favour or against.

What happened here?

I think her very balanced statement  - nothing as one-sided as the spin Gus Williams would inflict on it - reflects the Delaration's authors current attempts to counteract the smear job that tries to present the Declaration as a form of censorship, i.e. a boycott of Israeli cinematography.

Fonda writes: "...protesting the use of the festival to "rebrand" Israel was perhaps too easily misunderstood. It certainly has been wildly distorted. Contrary to the lies that have been circulated, the protest letter was not demonizing Israeli films and filmmakers. ..."

This is an inaccurate thread title, since the Toronto Declaration wasn't about BDS.  Keep spinning though!

The text of the "Toronto Declaration" is at:

If you can find anything in it about BDS, I'll gnaw off my pinky finger.

Eww!

I agree it was an inaccurate thread title...not the first ever on Babble...perhaps we can ask Gus to amend

Even if Gus could (he can't), he wouldn't. It would diminish the disinformation value.

I have a question, this declaration accuses TIFF basically of colluding with those who originated the "Brand Israel" campaign. Yet Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling of TIFF have stated categorically that this is untrue. Are they lying? If so can anyone here prove it or is it just another baseless innuendo to target Israel? Look forward to responses.

False. Of course. You must be counting on people being too lazy to click and read:

Quote:
[From the Declaration:] We protest that TIFF, whether intentionally or not, has become complicit in the Israeli propaganda machine.

Clearly, the Declaration does not accuse TIFF of "colluding" with anyone nor even of intentionally serving Brand Israel.

That doesn't even rate a "nice try", Jaku, but keep trying.

There is apparently some substance to that allegation, even though, as noted, the Declaration itself does not make the allegation.

says the Brand Israel campaign did have a hand in getting the festival's City to City program under way:

Quote:

He said that while the City to City program was initiated by the festival, the Israeli ministry of foreign affairs was involved as part of its Brand Israel media and advertising campaign, which was launched last year.

So Gus owes Jane Fonda an apology.
