Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Havana on Sunday for Cuba's biggest open-air concert since the 1959 revolution, featuring a star-studded lineup of Spanish and Latin American performers.
Colombian singer Juanes organized the event, despite getting death threats from Cuban exiles opposed to the concert, which got underway at 2 p.m. local time, .
"It's a message of peace — not only for Cuba, it's for the entire region," the 37-year-old Grammy winner said at a news conference in the capital on Saturday.
Not everyone is excited:
U.S. President Barack Obama waded into the issue Sunday in an interview with Spanish-language Univision network.
"I certainly don't think it hurts U.S.-Cuban relations. These kind of cultural exchanges — I wouldn't overstate the degree that it helps."
