What is the hold that Stephen Harper has over the Canadian people and how can it be broken?

In order for the Conservatives not to have a majority, the Liberals have to have a half-decent election. So, in order to prevent a Conservative majority, we also need to prevent the Liberals from having an election worse than Dion.

A good start would be to have Jack Layton's nose surgically removed from Harper's posterior. Is there no unprincipled scheme too low for Layton to seize?

The NDP supporting the neo-cons - that must make principled socialists feel proud.

If the NDP decision was really, really that bad, we would know by now.  I'd be curious to be within the party caucus, and hear them discussing about voting down a procedural change to EI that helps out some 190,000 people and many more will be help as they lose their employment in the next year.  It ain't much, but there is no poison pill, unlike when the Liberals voted with the CPC and took away womens rights. I have been following the EI bullshit for more then a year. I would be furious with the NDP if they voted down the government over adding money to EI programs, already in existence and to be made universally.  Fact is, the Liberals had no principles on this file, and the CPC view the EI file with near contempt.

If there are Socialists out there, they would know that the fight is not won over the short term, but over the longterm.  There is little doubt that the NDP had anything to do with the EI proposal, except do due diligence on it before going for it. But the CPC weren't going to put alot on the table for EI, and its more then IGGYs  grandstand on EI managed to secure.

There is little doubt that two parties are sharing positives from this.

If you really care about principles and helping people, then its pretty obvious, the NDP managed to do something that helps people rather then have an action, that as polls would now indicate, not only cause an unnecessary election, but likely have lead to an CPC majority and an LPC meltdown.

Perhaps you have a better idea of principles. But then, you probably don't have to look people in the eye, like I do.  I have little use for an NDP that believes itself morally superior and misses the opportunity to help society.

And your alternative is?

canuquetoo, anyone who cares a fig about Canadian workers or Canadian anything should be doing everything in their power to prevent a Harper majority, not score cheap ideological purity points.

I looked in vain for journalism yesterday. The complete abdication of journalistic responsibility by the mainstream media has made it very hard for people who don't go out of their way to look for it to find the analysis citizens need at a critical time. What puzzles me most is that Canadians do largely recognize the corporate/rentier class bias of the MSM, but still choose to rely on them rather than seeking out alternative sources. Can we really be that lazy or are we so well-indoctrinated by now that we reject anything else as tainted?

Max, you are right. It doesn't make any sense for either the Liberals or the NDP to actively pursue an election.
The current goal for both parties should be to sit tight and only call for an election, if the Conservatives try to pull something to egregious that we simply can not stand for it. At least then, it will seem as if the Conservatives are the ones calling for the election by trying to pass such nonsense.

The only blame the NDP should have in this, is the political gamesmanship they were playing when the Liberals supported the Conservatives. They know the Liberals could not afford an election, and there was really no point in bashing them for supporting the Cons, just like there is no point now for bashing the NDP for supporting the Cons.

Sadly, the NDP and Liberals like to take potshots at eachother, instead of working together, and all it really does is undermine the credibility and focus of both parties.

How refreshingly rational.

Some say misled. Some try to point to the absence of reading (between the lines of a right-wing media). Mainly, it's concern that people in charge should be able to talk to bankers and employers. Economic stuff that does not rock the boat or threaten job loss at those corporations, or pension loss (same place).

Leger poll from Quebec.  In Quebec Layton is rated best over Harper and Iggy.

distinctlystupid

Canadians are sick and tired of our hard earned money going down the financial cesspool  in Quebec. Layton and Iggy will only give in to the whiners and complainers in Quebec who openly advocate "creating crises" with the federal government to advance their separatist ideology.  Separatists need to start working for a living and for a change and make their own money. Your self esteem will grow I promise you that. Separating yourself from federal money can be done and you'll all feel better. Break that federal money addiction sooner rather than later bitches.

Canadians have learned to trust Harper these past few years. Like seriously ... Iggy can't even control that blabber mooth Coderre whining and complaining as usual. And Layton will give up all of canada's riches to Quebec cause he's scared of separatist whining and complaining and is scared they'll separate. Quebec has no money to separate. Cheap melodramatic posturings about separating from Canada from separatists and Layton and his fools buy into each and every time. Layton's a weak leader and doesn't inspire strength. he'll just bend over and take it from the separatists.

Harper's the best Canada's got to date, you extreme left wing bitches, best get used to it.
