Stephen Harper gets by with a little help from his friends

Never underestimate this man:

I can appreciate Curly Maple's revised lyrics for Yesterday

"Yesterday, my majority's even
farther away
Now minority's here to stay

Oh I believe in Yesterday

Suddenly
I've got half the seats
I need to lead

There's a pain that's come over me
Majority--where can you be?"

Steve Harper is so yesterday.

Stargazer

Hahahaha.

Stephen Harper is to Art what Stockboy Day is to Evolution.

Imagine how Ringo must be feeling. Or Joe Cocker. Feel the competition, guys!

Whenever there's the possibility of an election his handlers start doing things to make him look human, whether it's appearing on Rick Mercer, holding a kitten (RIP), or this.  They're getting better at it.

They forgot the sweater.

Hmmm... what other Fab Four song will he sully next? The Long and Winding Road? Nowhere Man?

Unionist

Michael row the boat ashore, Hallelujah.

Hit the road, Jack.

Whoops, wrong category.

Mean Mr. Mustard?

I wanna tell him that I love him a lot, but I gotta get a bellyful of wine.

Yo Yo Ma just dropped precipitously in my estimation for allowing himself to be a part of this cheap political grandstanding.

Catchfire Catchfire's picture

I thought it was pretty good. And what should Yo Yo Ma care about political grandstanding in a foreign country?

oldgoat

I was thinking that about Yo Yo Ma.  He is however a true internationalist, and maybe just doesn't know.  Maybe they have something on him.

It also struck me that Harper wasn't too bad.  I was aware he played the piano reasonably well, though he's no Condi Rice, but still, he wasn't too bad up there.   Maybe we can all help him on the road to becoming a mediocre lounge singer.

I was raised on a farm in Alberta.  My father was born in a sod hut in the Cyrpress Hills, my mother in a trappers cabin in  Fort Vermilion.  Their families had come to Alberta, or what was to become Alberta, in the 1880s and 1890s, respectively.  I drove a tractor doing field work when I was 12. I went to a one room country school.  I still check to see how the crops are and I still miss the smell of harvest.  But you know what?  I went to university. I like the odd bit of classical music.  I read Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje and even a bit of Mordecai Richler.  And I do like the odd drink of fancy coffee.  And the odd gourmet meal.  I like Edmonton, but I also like Toronto. My youngest grandson has been enrolled in French emersion kindergarten and I am very happy about it.

Why am I telling everybody all about myself? Because though I am a rural Albertan born and bed I never go to Tim Hortons.  I like Second Cup because it is a Canadian company and I admire the founder.  But most of all I resent the implication that some Canadians are red necks and some are elites and that they should be divided up as such. It is false stereotyping and that stereotyping is used to divide Canadians and politicize them in a sad, sad way. It is simplistic and damaging and crude to set Canadians against each other like this.

When I heard about Mr. Harper playing and singing at an 'elite soiree' all I could think about was the cuts to the CBC and how because I now live in a remote northern community I can no longer get my little hit of classical programming from the Roy Thompson Hall on Sunday nights and I resent that too.

Ok,  Harper singing "hit the road jack" would be funny!

I think he might to a great version of 'Its My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To"  especially after the next election when he doesn't win a majority.  That is if the knifes in his back don't hurt his vocal range.

I would love to hear Neil Young do a remake of "Campaigner".

Where even Richard Nixon's got soul.

Where even Stephen Harper's got soul.

I am reminded of this musical  photo op, a few years back.

(I couldn't find anything about the fate of the actual kitty - this was the best google could do for me.)

I hate to say it, but I think he was pretty good.  It's amazing, the advances they've made with robot technology!

I hear that in the next upgrade, they'll include a "hugging children" feature.

Yikes! In the 1930's, Yosef Stalin and Adolf Hitler took many photo ops shaking the hands and patting the heads of children as part of a propaganda "charm offensive".

Yep, just like Karl Rove doing rap.

Polunatic2

I thought he was lip synching. So, he gets high with a little help from his friends. Sounds like grounds for a search warrant.

I'm surprised and pleased that among all the snarky shots at Harper for a grand accomplishment, ( how many weak voiced, amateur pianist babblers, surrounded by professional musicians could have pulled off performance like that), not one personal snipe about his personal appearance was uttered.

Are babblers practicing what they preach or has the shock that Harper just earned his majority not worn off yet?

Ghislaine

A Globe and Mail letter-writer suggested "Fool on the Hill" as the next number he attempts....

G. Muffin

I thought he did really quite a good job.  Harper's singing voice is not at all what I would have expected from his speaking voice (which I don't find particularly pleasant).  Now I'd like to hear Barack Obama sing.

ETA:  And, judging by their facial expressions, I think the musicians immediately behind him were pleasantly surprised as well.

Antonia Zerbisias points FB friends to this funny reminder from ACR (A Creative Revolution) of who Stevie's friends really are.

Well Jack recorded this as early as 2005:
