Stephen Harper gets by with a little help from his friends

I thought it was pretty good. And what should Yo Yo Ma care about political grandstanding in a foreign country?

I was raised on a farm in Alberta.  My father was born in a sod hut in the Cyrpress Hills, my mother in a trappers cabin in  Fort Vermilion.  Their families had come to Alberta, or what was to become Alberta, in the 1880s and 1890s, respectively.  I drove a tractor doing field work when I was 12. I went to a one room country school.  I still check to see how the crops are and I still miss the smell of harvest.  But you know what?  I went to university. I like the odd bit of classical music.  I read Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje and even a bit of Mordecai Richler.  And I do like the odd drink of fancy coffee.  And the odd gourmet meal.  I like Edmonton, but I also like Toronto. My youngest grandson has been enrolled in French emersion kindergarten and I am very happy about it.

Why am I telling everybody all about myself? Because though I am a rural Albertan born and bed I never go to Tim Hortons.  I like Second Cup because it is a Canadian company and I admire the founder.  But most of all I resent the implication that some Canadians are red necks and some are elites and that they should be divided up as such. It is false stereotyping and that stereotyping is used to divide Canadians and politicize them in a sad, sad way. It is simplistic and damaging and crude to set Canadians against each other like this.  

When I heard about Mr. Harper playing and singing at an 'elite soiree' all I could think about was the cuts to the CBC and how because I now live in a remote northern community I can no longer get my little hit of classical programming from the Roy Thompson Hall on Sunday nights and I resent that too.

I think he might to a great version of 'Its My Party and I'll Cry if I Want To"  especially after the next election when he doesn't win a majority.  That is if the knifes in his back don't hurt his vocal range.

I would love to hear Neil Young do a remake of "Campaigner".

Yikes! In the 1930's, Yosef Stalin and Adolf Hitler took many photo ops shaking the hands and patting the heads of children as part of a propaganda "charm offensive".

I thought he was lip synching. So, he gets high with a little help from his friends. Sounds like grounds for a search warrant.
