Report: Shin Bet foot-dragging keeping Gazans from doctors visits

The slow response of the Shin Bet security service to requests by Palestinians seeking to leave the Gaza Strip for medical care via the Erez crossing was the main reason that more than one third of such applicants missed their medical appointments between January and August 2009, according to a new report.

Clerics Urge Jerusalem's Muslims to 'protect Al-Aqsa'

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered a panel to investigate what led the PA to request the United Nations Human Right Council postpone discussion of the Goldstone report.

In a single phone call to his man in Geneva, Mahmoud Abbas has demonstrated his disregard for popular action, and his lack of faith in its accumulative power and the place of mass movements in processes of change.

Ramallah - A few hundred protesters demonstrated here yesterday against the Palestinian Authority's decision to delay endorsing the Goldstone report.

The demonstration was organized by a group of NGOs. Participants included activists from left-wing Palestinian parties and Mustafa Barghouti's Palestinian National Initiative party.

The Other Israel

YESTERDAY, OUR table celebrated with Ada Yonath.

This "table" just had its 50th anniversary. It started by accident in "California", the Café established at the time by Abie Nathan, who later became famous as the Peace Pilot. Afterwards, we met for many years at the legendary Artists' Café Cassith. Since that place was closed down - like many other Tel Aviv landmarks - the table wandered to several other places and became known as the "Cassith exiles' table". The "House of Lords" one newspaper nicknamed it.

Excellent link. Thanks for that. Good explanations of the archeology game and the present strife over the temple and mosque. Very much appreciated.

Qassem al-Masri's father has been suffering from liver problems for years. Sometimes he is hospitalized, and usually he doesn't feel well (but then again, no one ever feels well in the Gaza Strip). But his condition is not grave. That is why Israel won't let his 25-year-old son Qassem, an Israeli citizen and a medical student, to visit him in Beit Hanoun.

Israel To Join NATO Mediterranean Patrols

http://nowlebanon.com/NewsArticleDetails.aspx?ID=119654

"The Israeli navy will join a NATO force patrolling the Mediterranean Sea as part of the "global war on terror" a military spokesman said on Tuesday...with legitimacy for its military actions shrinking, even a relatively minor development such as the inclusion of an Israeli ship in the alliance's naval police force, is big news.."

The Slippery Slope

IT IS, of course, all the fault of Judge Richard Goldstone. He is to blame for it, as he is to blame for all the other ills that are befalling us now.

He is to blame for the trouble we are having at the UN, both in New York and in Geneva. For the conspiracy to bring our political and military leaders to trial in The Hague. For the ongoing crisis between us and Turkey. For the many initiatives throughout the world to organize a boycott of Israel.

Now he is to blame also for the existential danger facing Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen).

Lucky pasta! When an American senator discovered Israel bans importing pasta into the Gaza Strip, a storm broke out. And ever since, senior Israeli defense officials have included noodles on their list of permitted products. And calves, how did we forget them? That was approved by the highest levels of the Defense Ministry. After all, the bureaucrat-officers would never have dared violate the siege directives.

On the face of it, it is merely a matter of semantics. The Israeli human rights organizations call it "a breaking off of communications," referring to the refusal of the Israeli Coordination and Liaison Authority at the Erez Crossing to deal, since September, with their questions and appeals regarding exit permits for Palestinians from the Gaza Strip since September.

Richard Goldstone visited the Gaza City neighborhood of Zaytoun in late June to tour the compound of the extended Samouni family, the subject of coverage here in recent weeks ("'I fed him like a baby bird,'" September 17; "Death in the Samouni compound," September 25). Twenty-nine members of the family, all of them civilians, were killed in the Israel Defense Force's winter assault - 21 during the shelling of a house where IDF soldiers had gathered some 100 members of the family a day earlier.

"Where Have All the Friendships Gone..."

ACCORDING TO a Chinese saying, if someone in the street tells you that you are drunk, you can laugh. If a second person tells you that you are drunk, start to think about it. If a third one tells you the same, go home and sleep it off.

Our political and military leadership has already encountered the third, fourth and fifth person. All of them say that they must investigate what happened in the "Molten Lead" operation.

Count Me Out

A YEAR before the Oslo agreement, I had a meeting with Yasser Arafat in Tunis. He was full of curiosity about Yitzhak Rabin, who had just been elected Prime Minister.

I described him as well as I could and ended with the words: "He is as honest as a politician can be."

Arafat broke into laughter, and all the others present, among them Mahmoud Abbas and Yasser Abed-Rabbo, joined in.

Jewish Directors Challenge Israel:

http://www.gnn.tv/headlines/21486/Jewish_directors_challenge_Israel

"A series of controversial Israeli films are provoking outrage and plaudits in equal measure at the London Film Festival. The best documentary award has gone to one of the year's most controversial films. 'Defamation' is a polemic by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir. In his expose of America's Anti-Defamation League (ADL) he claims anti-Semitism is being exaggerated for political purposes. He argues that American Jewish leaders travel around the world exploiting the memory of the Holocaust to silence criticism of Israel..."

Israeli commandos capture a ship on the high seas of the Cyprus coast.  Off the Somali coast they would be called pirates andwarships would be after them.

We will have to see how the international community deals with this latest act of piracy. Will Harper now send a warship to the Eastern Mediteranian, I am sure Mike and Jack will support him in that.
