Okay, and about 78, or so, days, I think.

remind remind's picture

whatever, unionist, I am very pissy and with good reason IMV.

Stargazer

Okay kids, take your scraping elsewhere. Kiss

Unionist

I am most certainly NOT talking about remind, who is as loyal and sincere a babbler as one could wish for.

remind remind's picture

Me neither, I am pissy at the moment about a lot of things and unionist does not happen to currently, be one of them. We were both making our own pesonal commentary about things transpiring today.

The thread title could be changed to "I love Babble - it's (certain unnamed) Babblers I can't stand!"Wink

George Victor

Which brings us back to your OP a month or so back, Martin:

"Do we need them to keep threads alive with the sounds of controversy?

Do we realize all that is lost by always having important conversations constantly forced back to square one by their incessant, predictable, egregious opposition?

"No, I am not going to name any names or suggest any criteria. I am just sick and tired of their in-your-face hostility to any progress on key issues, and sick and tired of Babble's apparently infinite tolerance/complicity.

At the very least, please add to the list a "Get lost, you pathetic creep!" emoticon we can fall back on when moderation fails us.

Thank you."

Speaking of creepy, the sudden appearance of criticism of the unfaithful, (no names named, mind you) reminds me of tales out of the past - just prior to the hanging.

remind remind's picture

You know harvesting threads to throw up in people's faces  later really tees me off.

George Victor

Sorry, but so does the threatening nature of the post above it throw me off.  Positively disheartening when one is arguing for greater freedom of voice and opinion.

AND, who could that "individual" be?  Hmm...what are the transgressions that are seen as an attack on babble itself?  God, I have no nails left to bite.

remind remind's picture

i can hear what martin is refering to.

too bad more can't

George Victor

So we enter into a period of psychological terrorism until the guilty party/parties are outed?  What a quesionable situation for "humanists"  to be reduced to. Perhaps another "list" should be compiled - those warranting shunning, not for attacks, but for their "viewpoints"?

remind remind's picture

You know... I used to buy into the term "humanist" and then I realized left orientatedmen had co-opted it to suit patriarchy and used it against feminists to get us to believe we needed to help them get over themselves. After all, it is the 'human' thing to do.

Now, I ascribe only to the term "feminist", when women reach equality and stop  being objectified, exploited and silenced, maybe I will revist the term humanist for pratical use.

Guess men don't realize how much psychological terrorism and attacking of women's viewpoints by forcing patriarchial counterpoints goes on here, eh?!

.

martin dufresne

I do, and it saddens me immensely.

George Victor, do you not notice the "wink" emoticon at the end of my post #57? It indicates sarcasm and it means I am speaking tongue-in cheek to characterize the present goings-on.

From time to time, it's important to remind ourselves that we love this community, and therefore we will defend it and commit ourselves to improve it.

I had been posting on babble for a few days back in early 2002 when I ran across a thread that included a discussion of Thorstein Veblen.  That sealed it for me; I henceforth thought this was a pretty cool place...although the Great Schism was kind of ugly.  I went away for a couple of years, but was drawn back becaue I missed quite a few posters...well, Tommy Paine, to be exact.

(I'm kidding.  There are others.  You know who you are.)

I love babble, it is not only a great way to read about issues in a way that is not presented in the main stream but it is also a way to report and get the word out on issues with personal relevance and personal experiences on issues that would not be possible except through mass email lists and hoping that people knew the right people to get the emails out.

It's also a way to hear the voices of the people that are directly involved in some of the struggles without having to worry about an editor cutting that part of the story because it doesn't fit in with what they want the story to be.

Unionist

Great to see you around again, Refuge!

Apparently according to new thought, we should NOT be doing this, if their voices can be presented directly here by themselves, then we should NOT be presenting it.

Thanks Unionist.  I will try and see if I can get back in the midst of everything after living in a field for the last couple of months!Wink

Sorry remind, not quite sure that I am following what you are saying, maybe I have been off babble to long.  What are you referring to?

Caissa

If we didn't love Babble would we be posting here?

Maysie Maysie's picture

remind please don't post things from other threads. Thank you.

Refuge, nice to see you again! remind is referring to my words in this thread.

Ahh, yes I have been away to long and not following the threads.  I will just leave it alone then!  It's nice to be back.  Hoping to be able to get back into babbling again, think I am off to a good start anyway!

Time to revive some of the good feelings. I wonder how others got hooked on this place?

I love arguing with you Unionist.  Seriously, I know you don't like my style but I wouldn't like it without you Unionist.  :->

I'm hooked cause our worlds fucked.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

And there's nothing we can do about it, so rather than medicating, I vent here once in awhile to control my anxiety.

Fidel

babble used to be a pretty good place to discuss things.

I care a lot less about your style than your sincerity and your partisanship. I've never had the slightest doubt about those. Thanks for being here.

personally i love this place cause we get called snakes.....while the same are telling us how nasty we are.

Fidel

So when will this absurd censorship come off 9/11 discussions? Whose big brother idea was it anyway? Or is this a babble maneuver to be more in-tune with the anti-Muslim hate fest happenin' in the US right now? These people who say 9/11 discussions are dumb have not been shown any legally admissible evidence that a single Muslim from anywhere in Central Asia or Middle East had a single thing to do with 9/11. And yet they refer to 9/11 discussions as dumb. And I'm not mentioning any specific moderator either.

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

And I love Fidel.  You ROCK dude!  And snakes, eh remind, is that the worst they can call us?  I won't be satisfied until we're named all kinds of vermin.

I LOVE BABBLE!

RevolutionPlease RevolutionPlease's picture

And thanks Unionist, I felt bad for some of the things I've posted.  I'm with you in the long run brother.

Fidel

And we love you, too, RP. As the great basketball coach of the Flint Tropics, Jackie Moon, once said, Everybody love everybody!

Golly, who'da thunk.

For me, it was reading Nickle and Dimed and asking a lefty friend in despair where I could go to learn and explore more especially at my sense of outrage at the books contents.

He recommended here, which is a little odd since hes never been here tho hes a active activist for Free Tibet(on the board) and ecological and power stuff

HA!  Are you spying on me dude?  That information hit a little too close to home.  I'm watching you back, dude.

Free throws are probably the best facet of Jackie's game according to Jackie. And, Love Me Sexy has to be one of the greatest songs ever. Jackie and his mom rule! Heaven wants us to win this game, Father Pat. I'll BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!

Good to hear sister/brother.

I like doing detective work, and there's often some interesting detectin' to do on babble. I'm speaking about politics, of course.

Caissa

Lately babble has been becoming a bit of a bully pit.

As long as people can summon up the courage to draw the distinction between the voicing of moderate opinion and full, foul-mouthed ambush by the correct-speak clerics out to put down apostasy, there can be warmth of feeling between people on the same side of the human scale.  There can be little to "love" about an environment where people are afraid to stand up to their attack, or even afraid to comment during the attack.  You'd have to love psychodrama.

skdadl

Hmmn. Funny. I think of psychodrama as something that is very much quieter than an attack, actually, an open attack, anyway. Psychodrama involves insinuation and indirection, and unfortunately sometimes has to be dealt with in the same way. At least for a time, until you've got your detectin' done.

That is why I am here and love it.

One of the few places where I learn form other posters because they bring more than just mainstream analysis. I haven't been doing it myself as much lately but I also love the links to articles etc. on issues.

I love babble.  Fortunately for me I don't believe that unconditional love requires liking everything about a place.

Excellent observation.....

BillBC

I'm somewhat addicted to this place, which is odd, because I'm out of sympathy with much of what I read here, and am always having to restrain myself from saying things that are sure to get me banned.  But I'm fascinated to read so much intelligent (sometimes) discussion from a point of view that isn't mine.  I've also learned some things too, especially about privelege....

What can I say? Babble sucks you in, or rather, in my case, back in. I have been in and out of Babble since 2001, loving it and hating it and being mad and happy and intrigued.

When I came back this time I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay at all. But after Fidel said I would be missed if I left, I decided to stick around. As Tommy said in an earlier post, I also mellowed over the years.

You probably want to know who I was before but I thought I would leave that question unanswered – I like my new alien personality and don’t want to conjure up old ghosts. Some of you may have figured it out already, I now realize that I have, unintentionally, left many clues in my recent posts.

OK, here it goes: live long and prosper!

Mr Spock was on babble?

Funny, I was thinking about Mr Spock the other day when I read a story about Julian Assange in his younger days. He went through a period where he was trying to limit himself to one meal every two days because he wondered whether the human body could be more "efficient" than it is. He had a similar attitude to sleep. Can you imagine offering someone who hasn't eaten for a day some food and having him reply, "That would not be efficient"?

remind remind's picture

there really is no perfect place in this world, it, perfection, just remains the "ideal".

No less so with babble/rabble.

But it would seem that some, including myself in this upon occasion, believe that it should be perfect here. Not taking into account what is perfection for 1 person is chaos for another, is a problem that perhaps cannot be fixed. It is a reality of life as we humans are not 1 in united thought and purpose.

We are not yet the Borg. Hopefully we never will be.

I object to this negative attitude towards alien species. Wink

Seriously, the world (and Babble) could use a bit more Borg-like qualities. For example, ignoring trespassers until they prove to be an actual threat – and how much actual threat could we be to each other in Cyber Space? Sticks and Stones, you know.

Probably it is telling that my favorite characters in Star Trek are Spock in the original, Data in the Next Generation and the Doctor in Voyager. I also like Bones in Bones. It is so refreshing to watch rational people (even if they overdo it a bit) among the over-emotional, often illogical and often self-defeating humans.
