You know... I used to buy into the term "humanist" and then I realized left orientatedmen had co-opted it to suit patriarchy and used it against feminists to get us to believe we needed to help them get over themselves. After all, it is the 'human' thing to do.
Now, I ascribe only to the term "feminist", when women reach equality and stop being objectified, exploited and silenced, maybe I will revist the term humanist for pratical use.

I had been posting on babble for a few days back in early 2002 when I ran across a thread that included a discussion of Thorstein Veblen. That sealed it for me; I henceforth thought this was a pretty cool place...although the Great Schism was kind of ugly. I went away for a couple of years, but was drawn back becaue I missed quite a few posters...well, Tommy Paine, to be exact.

I love babble, it is not only a great way to read about issues in a way that is not presented in the main stream but it is also a way to report and get the word out on issues with personal relevance and personal experiences on issues that would not be possible except through mass email lists and hoping that people knew the right people to get the emails out.
It's also a way to hear the voices of the people that are directly involved in some of the struggles without having to worry about an editor cutting that part of the story because it doesn't fit in with what they want the story to be.

As long as people can summon up the courage to draw the distinction between the voicing of moderate opinion and full, foul-mouthed ambush by the correct-speak clerics out to put down apostasy, there can be warmth of feeling between people on the same side of the human scale. There can be little to "love" about an environment where people are afraid to stand up to their attack, or even afraid to comment during the attack. You'd have to love psychodrama.

Hmmn. Funny. I think of psychodrama as something that is very much quieter than an attack, actually, an open attack, anyway. Psychodrama involves insinuation and indirection, and unfortunately sometimes has to be dealt with in the same way. At least for a time, until you've got your detectin' done.

What can I say? Babble sucks you in, or rather, in my case, back in. I have been in and out of Babble since 2001, loving it and hating it and being mad and happy and intrigued.
When I came back this time I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay at all. But after Fidel said I would be missed if I left, I decided to stick around. As Tommy said in an earlier post, I also mellowed over the years.
You probably want to know who I was before but I thought I would leave that question unanswered – I like my new alien personality and don’t want to conjure up old ghosts. Some of you may have figured it out already, I now realize that I have, unintentionally, left many clues in my recent posts.

But it would seem that some, including myself in this upon occasion, believe that it should be perfect here. Not taking into account what is perfection for 1 person is chaos for another, is a problem that perhaps cannot be fixed. It is a reality of life as we humans are not 1 in united thought and purpose.

I object to this negative attitude towards alien species.
Seriously, the world (and Babble) could use a bit more Borg-like qualities. For example, ignoring trespassers until they prove to be an actual threat – and how much actual threat could we be to each other in Cyber Space? Sticks and Stones, you know.
Probably it is telling that my favorite characters in Star Trek are Spock in the original, Data in the Next Generation and the Doctor in Voyager. I also like Bones in Bones. It is so refreshing to watch rational people (even if they overdo it a bit) among the over-emotional, often illogical and often self-defeating humans.
