Canadian position prompts walk-out by developing countries at climate talks

OTTAWA - The government's push to abandon much of the Kyoto protocol prompted dozens of developing countries to walk out on Canada's address during recent climate talks in Thailand, The Canadian Press has learned.

Oops pay back sucks eh.

The Liberals sold Canada's environment to Exxon-Imperial and corporate raiders, and the Tories would have done it sooner if Mulroney's conservatives hadn't been tossed by voters. It's pretty difficult to curb carbon emissions in a country where we pay marauding multinationals to take valuable resources off our hands.

I'm not sure if other people are reading what I'm reading, but Canada, as climate's Darth Vader, is winning over The Force. Canada is investing billions into carbon capture and sequesteration (CCS), the IEA, International Energy Agency, is saying "Developing countries need more than 2,000 carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) plants by midcentury to stave off catastrophic global warming." And Britain's climate "czar" says "the amount of CO2 needed to produce a kilowatt of electricity in Britain should drop from 540 grams today to 300g in 2020 ... and to make this happen we need ... four new coal-fired plants fitted with the emerging carbon capture and storage technology."

This is truly astounding.

Why?

During the provincial election here in BC there was intense discussion here around this going to happen, I blame the co-option of the environalmentalist groups here in Canada by Pew Charities.

Fidel

That's wonderful news. That means Canadian taxpayers will enjoy a most unique privilege in the world of paying for the building of more coal-fired and nuclear power plants  here in our backyard, and let the Yanks continue siphoning off 60% of our oil and gas production for a song every year, ... so that America can be greener!! What we gain on the swings we can lose on the roundabouts. I heart our genuses in Ottawa.

Pollution delivery system emanating from Alberta could account for 87% of  of the maximum emissions from OECD countries in 2050 under a 450ppm stabilization pathway.

I think it has far more to do with money, remind. With the G7 having just agreed to end subsidies to fossil fuels, CCS ensures the money keeps flowing to the oil companies, in even bigger numbers, while not a fucking thing is done about emissions:

Shell Canada was first out of the gate in the carbon-capture effort Thursday, winning pledges of $865 million in aid from the federal and Alberta governments for its Quest pilot carbon-capture-and-storage (CCS) project over the next 15 years. The project was one of three picked this summer for funding under the $2-billion program, which plans to store four million tonnes of carbon dioxide underground annually by 2015.

From my reading, I believe the CCS religion is looking, just from Canada, $120 billion over the next two decades.

Here is a link for Fidel:

Kissinger takes a place at energy table
A must read article for anyone who believes there is any serious thought given, north or south of the border, to addressing climate change.

Not looking good for sure. That guy should have been in prison long ago. The world is being run by a small number of megalomaniacal psychopaths.

That is what I mean FM, it is ALL about the money, Pew Charities is Suncor, and they are now funding several environmental groups in Canada, including Pembina.

Too bad the NDP and Liberals don't have enough $$$$ to run an advertising campaign informing voters of this walkout.

If roles were reversed the CONS would be making the NDP and/or Liberals pay for such an embarrassing event.

That's fascinating. I didn't know that.

Too bad our media - particularly the CBC that citizens fund - refuses to inform Canadians of the humiliation being brought upon us by Harper and his oil-fueled Conservatives.

I'll bet Prentice told them off. He prolly told'em to mind their own business, and that the Europeeans aren't going to be tellin' our imperial masters in Warshington how to run things in Bananada. Our impotent ones can be somewhat assertive from time to time.

Yep, it is a nasty piece of work, and as such one cannot trust several environmental groups and their reportings and actions, any longer.

They exist merely to exist and provide employment for themselves, these days it seems, after allowing themselves to be co-opted by Pew Charities, aka Suncor. And this is why I label some environmentalist groups as pretendy environmentalists.

There is a whack load of information on it, in several BC election threads, if one does not want to do a internet search on it all.

Tim Flannery told a CBC radio audience this morning that China is not the internaional problem at the moment - it is showing signs of conforming to atmospheric requirements in the future - it is CANADA that's leading the way in screwing up international concensus by insisting on rewriting Kyoto commitments, etc.

Flannery made clear in 2007 in An Exploerer's Notebook: Essays on Life, History and Climate that Canada would be a problem thanks to the sands.

What SHOULD be the implications for Harperites and Alberta (and now Saskatchewan's neocons) is their shaming by all the provinces that ARE trying to come onside with Kyoto - and at the same time tame the loonie's growth that is again threatening to shut down what is left of manuifacturing exports in the country.

Suncor does not fund Pew Charities.

from: Pew Foundation, Suncor and Alberta's Anti-oilsands Lobby

Quote:
It might be a misrepresentation to assume that Suncor funds the Pew Trust, which in turn funds anti oil-sands research. Sunoco broke away from Sun Oil in the 1990s, and has left its Canadian arm to operate as an independent corporation. Nevertheless, Sunoco depends on Suncor-style bitumen, so its economic fortunes are connected to Suncor's.

Let's say one could make a direct connection between Suncor and the Pew Charitable Trust. Why would Suncor give money to Pew's environmental arm, only to donate money towards activist research aimed at the oil sands? In absence of a smoking gun document, I don't think this is the case. My guess is that the children of the Pew family are different people from their grandparents, and are trying to atone for their family's hand in harming the environment.

Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to follow funding trails and be aware of conflicts. In a sense all money is tainted.

Apparently the "big greens" waited until Peter Lougheed called for a moratorium on tar sands development before following suit.  Figures.

There should be a blog site called things the Globe and Mail and other MSM forgot to mention.

Pew family of Sun Oil were always staunch right wing republicans - and I seem to recall also a John Bircher as well.  An excellent book on the subject is Elaine Dewar's 'Cloak of Green', which you can probably find on Google Books and in which you will also find more on Suzuki and his foundation.

It's about time the developing countries walked away from Canada on Kyoto.  The will be joining the Liberal Party which walked away from Kyoto 10 years ago and about 30 seconds after the ink dried. The message from the CPC is that Canada left this treaty along time ago and never had any intention of taking it seriously.

remind remind's picture

NDPP,  also  if one looks who belongs to Pew Charities nowadays, one will see even more reason why any environmental groups should steer well away from their funding.

GentleHush

Any suggestions as to what it would take to reverse this backward slide?
