20 days / 20 ways to end violence against women

This is a Canadian Labour Congress campaign, but I couldn't find the right links on the CLC website, so I'm using the CAW site instead. You can click on this link to send your postcard.

Day 8 (Funding Women's Shelters: Shelter and Support)

Last year more than 100,000 women and children used shelters and their front-line advocacy and support. Funding for shelters must be substantially increased.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

Here is the link  that  was given in your thread about this in the activist forum.....

This is the direct link to the CLC campaign overview and video...

Unionist

Thanks, remind - but when I go to either of those CLC pages, I can't find the form to fill out for the other daily postcards (e.g. today's Day 8 postcard) - did you manage to figure it out? I just looked again and can only find the "keep gun registry" form...

Day 9: (Protection in Law: Feeling Safe)

Few women report sexual assaults. They are discouraged by the attitudes of police officers and judges, long trials and light sentences. Women need more support and protection in law.

unionist, I thought you supported light sentences?

I support women mobilizing and lobbying to end violence. If they consider that sentencing is an issue in deterring sexual offenders, I may have my own opinions, but that doesn't cancel me out as an ally. What I vigorously oppose is the ultra-right-wing approach to crime in general, and those who pander to it. Those are not the allies of women in struggle.

Ghislaine, please don't derail the thread. This is an important public education campaign.

remind remind's picture

How about men start lobbying men to stop raping and attacking women?

How about men teach their sons, nephews, brothers, and co-workers/students to stop raping and attacking women?

How about men start standing up and saying the problem is MEN, not women?

Slippery short slope, from being afraid to leave the house out of fear of attack, to being forced to stay in the house for one's own safety by the state....I think......after all, we are already in the house, eh!

Look, this is a CLC campaign, supported by many unions (including my own), and spearheaded by the women in our unions. Anyone who doesn't like this campaign can explain what's wrong with it, or not participate in it, or launch their own. I support it wholeheartedly, I'm part of the group in my local union communicating it to members, and I'll carry on. If it's not appropriate here for some reason, let me know.

Ghislaine

I am not derailing the thread - I was replying to one of the aspects of the campaign, which is:

Quote:

Few women report sexual assaults. They are discouraged by the attitudes of police officers and judges, long trials and light sentences. Women need more support and protection in law.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, but have heard others who don't. My reasons for agreeing with this come from the experience of working on the front lines with women who have been physically abused.

Ghislaine

I agree with the campaign wholeheartedly unionist and I am glad you posted it and that you agree with it. That was my whole point - if you agree with adequate sentencing and justice for women I applaud you.

Stop applauding me. I absolutely do not believe that harsher sentencing will address this problem in any meaningful way. But I'm an ally, and I support this campaign. If it were about sentencing, and nothing else, I'd reconsider my support. But the women in our unions understand that violence can't be ended just by ferreting out the violent individuals and locking them away.

Thank you for wording it like this.....because it is not just individual men,  it is a bunch of  individual men...

Men get to say; "it is those men over there....not me", when indeed they are part of the problem themselves....if they are not challenging misogyny and sexism amongst their family, peers and contacts. Or perhaps not even acknowleging it within themselves.

The reality is 1 out of 3 women will be raped within their lifetime, that is a lot of men doing a lot of raping, and our attackers are usually known to us, and then we have domestic violence beyond that, in all of its variables from belittling to outright physical abuse.

So we can see quite clearly the majority of women are not safe at home, and  as the 15 year old found out in PoCo, we are not safe out on the community.....so just where are we safe?

How many men understand what it is to feel like you are NEVER safe?

Let alone accept that  women do not feel safe because of them and their actions?

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 10 (Keep the Gun Registry: Disarm Domestic Violence)

A gun in the home increases the risk of harm for women and children. The law is working: gun-related spousal homicides are down 50%. Keep the gun registry.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

Stargazer

Damn right unionist. Thanks for posting this. I also do not think longer jail terms are the answer. If they were then the US would be a lot less violent.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 11 (Women with Disabilities: Access to Safety)

40% of women with disabilities are raped, abused or assaulted. But women's shelters can accommodate only one in ten. Women need better access to protection and support.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

I sent it to a Con and a Liberal (my only choices). I am not expecting much to happen.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 12 (Fund Equality-Seeking Groups: Equality is Safety)

The government closed Status of Women offices, cancelled the Court Challenges Program and stopped funding for advocates of women's equality. Reversing these measures would demonstrate the government's commitment to women's equality and to ending violence.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 13 (Work Safe: A Safe Place to Work)

Violence often follows women from home to work. In the last ten years there was a 40% increase in violence in workplaes. To protect women health and safety laws must include violence as a workplace hazard.

remind remind's picture

Wow, a 40% increase, are more women reporting, or are more men being abusive?

Bacchus

I would think it would be greater reporting since most workplaces have mechanisms in place for workplace harassment

Unionist

Yeah, from personal experience, I would have to agree with Bacchus - and I think that caption on that postcard was somewhat misleading.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 16 - (Missing Women: A Canadian Shame)

Over 500 Aboriginal women are missing and may have been murdered. Reduce this violence by giving Aboriginal women improved access to housing, victim support services, jobs, legal aid and the justice system.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 15 (Pay Equity: Pay Equity for Equality)

Equal pay for work of equal value is a fundamental right. Women need an effective, proactive pay equity law. Decent wages empower women to leave violent relationships.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 14 (Immigrant Women: A New Safe Home)

Immigrant women can be more vulnerable to violence. Barriers to employment reduce their ability to be economically independent. Immigrant women need access to all the protections available to women in Canada.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 17 (Access to Good Jobs: Jobs for Women)

Women's jobs often have short hours, low pay and few benefits. Thousands of women lost good jobs in the current economic crisis. The government's response must include women's employment. Financial independence is crucial to women's safety.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 19 (Young Women: Young and Safe)

In 2005 girls and young women represented 79% of reported sexual assault cases. Young women were killed 3 times more often than women in spousal homicides. Anti-violence education and support for women's services will keep these young women safe.

20 Days/20 Ways - Day 20 (International: Safe World)

Women worldwide are threatened by rape, enslavement, child marriages, dowry-related murders, honour killings, infanticide and trafficking. Canada should be a leader in making the world safe for all women.
