Thanks, remind - but when I go to either of those CLC pages, I can't find the form to fill out for the other daily postcards (e.g. today's Day 8 postcard) - did you manage to figure it out? I just looked again and can only find the "keep gun registry" form...

Day 9: (Protection in Law: Feeling Safe)

Few women report sexual assaults. They are discouraged by the attitudes of police officers and judges, long trials and light sentences. Women need more support and protection in law.

Twenty years is too long.

Government attention to violence against women is long overdue. A law and order agenda is not the answer. Women need economic and social security to be safe at home, at work and in our communities. We need support for women's services and equality.

Now is the time for action.

I support women mobilizing and lobbying to end violence. If they consider that sentencing is an issue in deterring sexual offenders, I may have my own opinions, but that doesn't cancel me out as an ally. What I vigorously oppose is the ultra-right-wing approach to crime in general, and those who pander to it. Those are not the allies of women in struggle.

How about men start lobbying men to stop raping and attacking women?

How about men teach their sons, nephews, brothers, and co-workers/students to stop raping and attacking women?

How about men start standing up and saying the problem is MEN, not women?

Slippery short slope, from being afraid to leave the house out of fear of attack, to being forced to stay in the house for one's own safety by the state....I think......after all, we are already in the house, eh!

Look, this is a CLC campaign, supported by many unions (including my own), and spearheaded by the women in our unions. Anyone who doesn't like this campaign can explain what's wrong with it, or not participate in it, or launch their own. I support it wholeheartedly, I'm part of the group in my local union communicating it to members, and I'll carry on. If it's not appropriate here for some reason, let me know.

I am not derailing the thread - I was replying to one of the aspects of the campaign, which is:

I wholeheartedly agree with this, but have heard others who don't. My reasons for agreeing with this come from the experience of working on the front lines with women who have been physically abused.

I agree with the campaign wholeheartedly unionist and I am glad you posted it and that you agree with it. That was my whole point - if you agree with adequate sentencing and justice for women I applaud you.

Stop applauding me. I absolutely do not believe that harsher sentencing will address this problem in any meaningful way. But I'm an ally, and I support this campaign. If it were about sentencing, and nothing else, I'd reconsider my support. But the women in our unions understand that violence can't be ended just by ferreting out the violent individuals and locking them away.

Thank you for wording it like this.....because it is not just individual men, it is a bunch of individual men...

Men get to say; "it is those men over there....not me", when indeed they are part of the problem themselves....if they are not challenging misogyny and sexism amongst their family, peers and contacts. Or perhaps not even acknowleging it within themselves.

The reality is 1 out of 3 women will be raped within their lifetime, that is a lot of men doing a lot of raping, and our attackers are usually known to us, and then we have domestic violence beyond that, in all of its variables from belittling to outright physical abuse.

So we can see quite clearly the majority of women are not safe at home, and as the 15 year old found out in PoCo, we are not safe out on the community.....so just where are we safe?

How many men understand what it is to feel like you are NEVER safe?

Let alone accept that women do not feel safe because of them and their actions?
