Worker Killed in Saskatchewan Potash Mining Accident
Potash worker killed by bin collapse
"A bin failed, and subsequently the potash poured out of it at that time," Chandra Pratt, the human resources manager for Mosaic in Esterhazy, told CBC News.
The storage bin is located above ground and is associated with the Mosaic Company's K2 potash mine. Esterhazy is about 225 kilometres east of Regina.
Yes, the bin had only a passing aquaintance with Mosaic [the multinational mining company formerly known as "International Minerals and Chemicals"], which shouldn't be blamed whatsoever.
I worked underground at IMC Esterhazy for a couple of years and saw enough dodgy safety practices encouraged by management to make me suspicious of this accident. The company always liked to blame the workers for any accident, and if anyone was ever injured, he'd be given light duy in the office, even if he couldn't walk, just to make the company's Lost Time record appear spotless.
This was supposed to have been in "labour and consumption."

Ah, the good old "hurricane watch" modified duties. They used to carry them in on stretchers some places.
What a terrible, terrible way to go. I hope the family consults a good lawyer about that bin.
