Copenhagen protest activities in Canada

This thread is for documenting and discussing protest actions taken in Canada to push the government to take action on climate change during the Copenhagen talks.

19 Greenpeace Canada activists have climbed onto the roof of the West Wing and Senate building of Parliament Hill and are rappelling down to protest Canada's position on climate change and are calling for shutting down the tar sands. Their action coincides with the opening of the Climate Change talks in Copenhagen, Denmark.

They've been playing it live on the news.  They're arresting them now and it looks like trying to figure out how to get the few off that are hanging down the side of the building.  CTV had a spokesman talking about it while they were showing the 'drama'.

As far as protests go this one is pretty impressive in terms of getting the message out and getting media coverage.  Just the sheer visuals are great.

And now there are pundits talking about all the security issues and the question of how they got past security to get up there and then going more in depth about what they're protesting.  All the while showing the live pictures of the whole thing.  They're showing them removing one of the protestors with a big crane bucket.

What an excellent initiative - congratulations Greenpeace! This story makes the RCMP look like incompetent fools, also.

i just thought of a slogan, 'Open Bankers' Books to Close a Fair Climate Deal'

Polunatic2

As someone recently said, "If the environment were a bank or auto manufacturer, it would be fixed already."

thanks

still thinking of improvements to slogans, maybe 'Bankers Books Hide Climate Crooks'

or something around 'cooks'...

In Halifax we've had demos and other actions for more than a week that have had good media coverage.

Monday, we wheeld out our prop of a 15' high oil barrel, took it around for "Time For An Oil Change" skits and ended the day joining commuters leaving town.

I've been trying to dig out the Herald picture of the barrel from their eccentric archives. Page 3 Tuesday, if someone can get it from http://thechronicleherald.ca/search.html [Caption said "Oversized Protest".]

Here's a link to a video. With my dial-up I've only managed to see a few seconds, and likely will never get the rest. So bearing in mind I haven't seen it:

The publicity of the protests- which by now no Nova Scotian could have missed- nicely frames the Premeir heading off to Copenhagen.

Even had Obama not forced Harper's "me too"... I think that with 3 or 4 Canadian Premeirs present, the PM would have been compelled to attend anyway.

Climate justice activists occupy House of Commons meeting

Quote:
On the second day of the UN Climate Negotiations in Copenhagen, climate justice activists occupied a meeting of the House of Commons' Environment Committee, calling on Canada to adhere to its Kytoto Protocol targets and to stop production in the Alberta tar sands.

Six youth members of People for Climate justice entered the committee meeting room. Removing their street clothes they revealed t-shirts with the words 'Climate Action Now.' They were able to move forward and sit-down briefly in the meeting room before being quickly removed by security. All six were detained for about an hour and charged with trespassing, which carries a fine.

There's a reference in the P4CJ link to the NDP's Climate Accountability Act making it back on the table. Anyone heard of this?

It was scheduled some time ago. Barring some new and surprising development, my understanding is that its just coming back for more procedural delay.

thanks

here's my slogan for our local vigil,

"Moratoriums, Not Markets"

thanks

We had a lovely gathering yesterday for our local vigil.  There was a mix of ages, of races, of faith backgrounds, and political leanings.  I was a bit late and missed the photo, but the sign initiated some useful conversations, and now has a good home with a family whose health has suffered mightily under the local nuclear fallout.

Incidentally, I saw their son at a recent Indigenous gathering, where I also had a conversation with a regional Metis Council rep who is struglling with a new nuclear waste site being built.

After the climate change vigil we had another gathering at a local establishment.  The comraderie was really warming, and it was heartening again to see people of different political persuasions who had worked together on anti-war, trade, and other efforts.  People's family members were also attending and organizing other vigils in the region- there was a very strong sense of interconnected grassroots concern about our country's contribution to climate change.  There was also strong evidence that people are aware and active around the many parts of the puzzle, and committed over the long haul.

I attended the rally/teach-in/eco-fair at U of T yesterday. Excellent program but unfortunately, far too few people - even less than last year's frigid outside rally. I wonder how all the candlelight vigils went?

A couple of good slogans I've seen:

"There's no planet B"

"Fossil fool on the Hill" (NOW magazine)
