Liberal Party of Canada promoting PM assassination?

A humorous attempt to mock the Prime Minister backfires.  Some of the pictures were funny, but the one of the 7 finalist pictures where the Oswald assassination had Harper photoshopped in his place has crossed the line.  This could fan the flames of hatred of someone who has mental issues and confirm to them that if those in a position of influence think it is ok to kill the P.M. they could become the vehicle to do the deed.

This is disgusting and the MSM has turned a blind eye to it.  Just as the the disgusting picture of J. Chretien back in 1993 were wrong this warrents more public outrage than we are currently receiving.

No political party has the right to ensight violence against their opponent.

Maybe if Harper stopped threatening the planet, people would stop threatening him.

And no, I'm not condoning this Liberal foolishness. I just think it's a tempest in a teapot, focussed upon by the media in order to avoid the real issues - the ones that make their corporate owners uncomfortable.

That does go too far, true - and I've no idea why the Liberals didn't just remove it and apologize. However - points to the creator for finding exactly the right expression.

On one hand, of course this is unacceptable.  If it was Layton, we'd all be going batshit, and rightfully so.

On the other hand, I'm still sceptical that this came from the Liberals, seeing that it's Harper in the photo and not Iggy.

Basically...It's classless...

The Liberal party apologized and pulled the photo. Big deal. Who cares.

It still won't beat this.

The Cons ventured down this tasteless path with their attacks on Chretien's speech disability and with an ad against Dion, showing bulletholes around Dion. I think that was the infamous "puffin" ad although I can't remember exactly.

Unionist

Not the puffin one - this:

As I said - who cares. The political class are a bunch of buffoons.

Michelle

I love their excuse about the Dion ad - "Those are holes in paper, not bullet holes!"  Um, looks like bullet holes to me!  Besides, what would create holes that look exploded around the edges like that, even in paper?

I agree with Unionist, though - who cares?  Everyone's just scoring political points at this point - faux outrage.  Even they don't REALLY care.  They're just using it to score political points.

Michelle

P.S. Also, the contest was asking people to post photoshopped pictures of where Harper would rather be than in Copenhagen right now.  So, while obviously this was tasteless, the point wasn't that they were saying they wanted him to be assassinated - they were joking that Harper would probably rather be in Oswald's place than at the conference.  Yes, it's hyperbole, but that's the whole point of a humourous photoshop contest, to be as silly and extreme as possible.

So in context, it's not quite as terrible as the Cons are making it out to be.  Of course, the Liberals should have seen this coming miles away and they should never have posted it - they should have known this would be the spin - I mean, hell, they'd put that spin on it themselves if the Cons did it to them.  But it's kind of ridiculous to claim that the Liberals were promoting the assassination of the Prime Minister.

The only interesting aspect of all this is how the Conservatives - who are brilliant tacticians - manage to get the Liberals to apologize for what (as Michelle has helpfully noted) is nothing whatsoever.

Can you begin to conceive of Harper apologizing for any of the atrocities, big and small, he has committed over the past 4 years?

Harper is turning the Cons into Canada's natural governing party. His job is made easier by the lack of any determined and skillful opposition.

One standard for the tories, Anything goes for them. Another standard for everyone else. They're like that older cousin, you know the one, the bully cousin. Anything goes for a laugh until the shoe is on the other foot. Then they cry and howl like wounded puppy dogs looking for sympathy. "Poor us. We're such victims." And the liberals are cowards for removing the photos.

What's that the little Ignatieff is holding in his hands? Looks like some kind of stick-used-to-make-holes-in-paper-device.

Particularly in the press. There was a time when weak political opposition prompted a rabidly radicalized press. No longer - the press is a tame and lazy lapdog today.

The opposition does have an overabundance of gutlessness. Has the PM apologized yet for calling all Liberals, including Jewish Liberals, anti-semits? I didn't think so. But the Liberals apologize for this? Spineless wonders.

Fidel

I think if Harper had any thoughts of putting a grab on phony majority power, it disappeared just over a year ago in the last election costing taxpayers over $300 million. He can't afford to be another Brian Baloney right now and playing it safe. Safe like the gutless onetrick wonder he is. His Bay Street and Warshington puppeteers are gonna give him the hook one o' these days.
