He also laid the foundation for the "prosperity gospel," the doctrine that has come to dominate televangelism. It holds that God rewards the faithful with material success.

That's particularly evil.

Of course, anyone who trusts a man who styles his real hair to look like a toupee get what they deserve.

I can't believe it! I prayed for that too! Just yesterday. Oh, Great Flying Spaghetti Monster, thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Doug

I suggest a Moral Orel marathon in his memory.

Tommy_Paine

Moral Orel is so delightfully dark, it can actually suck all the light from your living room.

oldgoat

Ah well, his son Anal is taking up the cause.

I'm heeding my dentist and going with Oral B.

Slumberjack

Novocaine is often administered to alleviate Oral pain and suffering. Death works just as well though.

Tiger Woods jokes are bad; Oral Roberts jokes are good?

Slumberjack

It depends on a few variables, according to ones point of view and preferred style of humour...dry wit, slapstick, satire, hyperbole etc....

I'm with Caissa on this one.

Surprised

I might have to go lie down now.

Unionist

All right.

Serious question.

If we can't joke about Oral Roberts, then what's left to live for?

And who said we couldn't joke about Tiger Woods?

Ok, when I said "serious question", I was just kidding.

Now Maysie, I need some clarification. You said you're "with Caissa" and you "have to go lie down". Huh?

Caissa and I rarely agree on anything. It's challenging for me to admit when I agree with him, makes me feel woozy... or some such metaphor. It's a joke, Unionist... now it's not funny since I've explained it. If it was funny to begin with. Tongue out

Someone needs to say it, might as well be me: Only the good die young.

I believe Dante said the sixth circle of hell was for heretics and religious hypocrites. Unfortunately, I don't believe in divine justice.

Me too, apparently.

I think the Tiger/Roberts dichotomy with me is that I'm just Tiger saturated elsewhere, at work, on facebook, etc., while Roberts might not be mentioned so much outside this venue.

Sorry, Maysie - I thought I'd venture a risqué joke. Next time I'll lard it with emoticons. Sealed

A risqué joke in an Oral Roberts thread? Ok, now I need a shower. Alone!

Just because I had to:

Quote:
"You sent us a man who we know and loved and who walked with God and never gave up the common touch," fellow evangelist Pat Robertson said during the ceremony's opening prayer. "I know you broke the mold with Oral."

Still sounds like a dental commercial - including the bit about putting the touch on commoners.

Maybe it was over on EnMasse, but it might have been here, but we once had a Beatles thread going that I managed to drift into a discussion of Oral Roberts.  They both had morning shows on the weekends when I was a kid, which was the connexion.

Try to see the difference

That reminds me, does anyone remember The World Tomorrow with Herbert W. Armstong?  That show was on all the time in the 60s.

al-Q: I don't remember Herbert W., but I do remember the son, Garner Ted Armstrong... I used to watch him in the 70s for amusment value and occasionally would submit the names and addresses of people I was less than pleased with to be on the mailing list for their house organ "The Plain Truth".
