Some freak tries to blow up a plane with a Canadian on board certainly is Canada's enemy.

A security crackdown on airline travel to the United States is a superficial fix to grave problems with Canada’s airport-safety system, says an expert who contends this country remains very vulnerable to aviation terrorism.

“It’s cosmetic,” said Peter St. John told Canwest News Service on Saturday.

“‘Reaction security’ is not good security. ‘Pre-emptive security’ is what you need. You need to be anticipating who’s going to be doing what. That’s what good intelligence is about.”

Transport Canada, along with governments around the world, on Saturday implemented temporary security measures for flights to the U.S., including bag and body searches at gates, after a Nigerian man tried unsuccessfully to detonate an explosive device on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

“It should be a wake-up call,” St. John said of what officials in the U.S. are calling a botched Christmas Day terror attack.

St. John, a retired university professor who has written extensively on airport security, aviation hijacking and international terrorism, said Canada’s airport-security system is porous and vulnerable to terrorism.

Transport Canada should focus more on hiring highly trained security professionals in airports instead of more expensive technology, St. John said.

“We’ve flirted with the idea of machines that can spot everything . . . but we’ve never developed proper human security,” he said. “In all intelligence matters . . . and counter-security . . . it’s always the personnel that find the problems — good, well-trained personnel who know what they’re doing and know what they’re looking for. If you’re not prepared to pay for these people and not prepared to put proper security in place, bombs are going to be let off.”

St. John has also long advocated for stricter security measures such as an outright ban on carry-on baggage, as well as a policy that prohibits passengers’ luggage from being on a flight if the owner isn’t — for any reason.

“I don’t understand why a country like Canada that’s so good militarily and has got so many techniques it has developed in war and conflict, cannot develop a proper security system,” he said. “It’s just simply a question of (terrorists) trying, before one of these things really works because of the poor defences. It was poor defences and bad airport security that led to 9/11.”

I suppose it different that he only tried to blow the plane up and kill everyone on board and didn't actually get to do it.

Not a bad guy at all. Misunderstood really.

I call bullshit on this so called "failed airline terror attack". C'mon, the guy boarded an airline from Schiphol, Netherlands, next to Heathrow, U.K., and La Guardia and L.A.X, U.S.A., is the largest airport in the world. You're telling me this guy waltzes past both human and machine security with an explosives vest on? I don't buy it.

Keep in mind that in less than a week, it will be 2010. In 2010, the Dutch government will pull Dutch troops out of Afghanistan. I think this whole affair was a staged theatrics put on by the Pentagon to stir post 9/11 security hysteria among the Dutch in the hope that enough Dutch people will put enough pressure on their government to make their troops stay beyond 2010.

All eyes are on the Netherlands. If the Netherlands withdraws its troops from Afghanistan, it will be the first NATO country to do so. This will set a precedent. Canada, if our PM Harlot doesn't get his way, will pullout in 2011. Uncle Sam and that NATO clown Anders Fogh Rasmussen don't want this to happen.

Bullshit.

Look, you don't give a person the 'third degree' when they are leaving a country.

Canadian Airline/Border Security Official: "So, you're leaving Canada for the U.S.? Well, nice knowing you. Thanks for coming out. Hope you enjoyed your stay. Have a nice day."

You check people over when they are entering a country.

It was U.S. intelligence, FBI, police services, airline security, border services, etc., who dropped the ball, fucked up, were asleep at the switch, caught with their pants down, however you want to put it, that permitted 9/11 to happen. Not Canada, or anyone else. When Americans or anyone else try to shift the focus onto Canada or another country, they are trying to shift the focus away from this fact.

Instant Karma: New US War Target Gets Its Own Terror Icon

i like what chris floyd has to say on this...

Wow, that didn't take long at all. Scant days after the American war machine took the cloaking device off its direct military involvement in Yemen, we have an alleged attempted terrorist attack by an alleged attempted terrorist who, just scant hours after his capture, has allegedly confessed to getting his alleged attempted terrorist material from ... wait for it ... Yemen!

ygtbk

It looks like there may in fact be an Al-Qaeda link, although we'll find out more at the (eventual?) trial.

http://english.aljazeera.net//news/americas/2009/12/200912274481258639.html

Look forward to a whole new era of inconvenience in air travel. What is puzzling is how anyone could get PETN on a plane - it is a nitrate, after all, and that is what explosive-sniffer machines are supposed to detect.

I think that this guy most likely may have mental health problems. It looks that way for so many reasons. But don't worry North Report, the Americans will still put him to death (as they continue to do with many people -children and adults- with mental illness).

Bungling idiot is right:

Jason Ditz wrote:

Abdulmutallab apparently kept the small explosive device on his lap, and detonated it from there while sitting in his seat. Passengers say "it sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," and yesterday officials said Abdulmutallab's injuries were consistent with a firecracker size explosion. Officials now say the device may have been a condom containing a small amount of PETN.

The attacker appeared to believe that the powdered explosive was much more powerful, capable of destroying the plane. He also claimed to be affiliated with al-Qaeda, though officials now say they doubt that and he appears to have acted alone.

Sorry to ruin your mad Dutch conspiracy theory in one fell swoop - but the guy cleared security in Lagos, Nigeria. He then changed planes in Amsterdam. People don't go through security again when they change planes within the same terminal - so this has nothing to do with Schiphol airport or with Dutch security. If you are looking for a smoking gun - you better start looking in Lagos.

Another gross breach of security. Those Federal agents scraping by on minimum incomes must have been wobbling for more pay when they were working with superstars of 9/11 terrorism and top "Al-CIA'da" capos. You see? These are the unmentionable details which were never publicized by the "9/11 Commission", which only happened at the request of victims families and politicians like Ralph Nader pushing for it to happen. Can we imagine that? - 3000 people died on 9/11, and Crazy, mad as a hatter George II and gangsters didn't even want there to be a federal investigation. It's the ultimate in laissez-faire mutated into disaster capitalism. It was a shocking experience, and fat government contracts would have to be awarded to their rich friends in key industries all around. It was a terrible time.

A friend of mine from Northern Ontario was doing a graduate degree in Minnesota about 15 years ago. US border bobbies stopped and detained him for several hours over a possession charge that occurred in Canada when he was still a teenager. A single marijuana cigarette possession charge, and ten or so years later they were all over him for it like flies at a picnic, and not in Bananada but the US. They can be serious assholes when they want to be. And today it's so sticky with having to have your papers in order at the border, you might think it was easier crossing borders in the former USSR. And you'd prolly be right.

Northreport, you won't be happy until every traveller is forced to wear a hospital smock and be restrained before being allowed on a plane. Would that be safe enough?

People really ramp up their level of cowardice when stupid things like this happen. Get a grip, it wasn't a terrorist attack, and it wasn't a threat. If he would have blown up the airplane then it wouldn't have been a threat or an attack either just big brother blowing up the airplane to try and rally everyone to hate terrorists I'm sure.

Heck I bet this guy is a CIA operative!  He failed to kill everyone on that airplane on purpose so he could get caught.

Wait I bet he dies in a mysterious car crash tomorrow.

It's always entertaning seeing who is going to scream bloody murder over a politician lying and who brushes off an attempt to kill hundreds of people.

Wearing a hospital gown is going too far. Searching someone for frickin bombs is not.

Buddy Kat

So it now turns out the attempt bombing was in retaliation for the yemen attack ...This is odd as the msm pretty well stayed away from that story and all the innocent woman and children that obama ordered killed via his cruise missle village attack.

You would think the headlines would have been the other day..." Crazed peace keeper kills 70 woman and children ....please don't fly this holiday season"..so because the media is playing ball on this side of the terror field , everyone is ignorant of retaliation.

If this would have been a successful attack the media would be just as guilty as the terrorist for not reporting the news that matters. Nowadays this stuff matters

If someone really wanted to blow up a plane they could, and  they would not do it through the off chance of a passenger getting through security with shit strapped to themselves.

It is like people stop thinking or something these days, when presented with such crap.

If someone really wanted a plane taken out they could  easily sit there on US soil with an underground purchased rocket launcher waiting for the plane to commence landing and then take it out, for a simple  example of way more effective means to bring a plane down, if one wanted to.

Such an action, no matter who did it, was to mass panic and then control masses of people...globally...at best
