Some freak tries to blow up a plane with a Canadian on board certainly is Canada's enemy.
A security crackdown on airline travel to the United States is a superficial fix to grave problems with Canada’s airport-safety system, says an expert who contends this country remains very vulnerable to aviation terrorism.
“It’s cosmetic,” said Peter St. John told Canwest News Service on Saturday.
“‘Reaction security’ is not good security. ‘Pre-emptive security’ is what you need. You need to be anticipating who’s going to be doing what. That’s what good intelligence is about.”
Transport Canada, along with governments around the world, on Saturday implemented temporary security measures for flights to the U.S., including bag and body searches at gates, after a Nigerian man tried unsuccessfully to detonate an explosive device on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.
“It should be a wake-up call,” St. John said of what officials in the U.S. are calling a botched Christmas Day terror attack.
St. John, a retired university professor who has written extensively on airport security, aviation hijacking and international terrorism, said Canada’s airport-security system is porous and vulnerable to terrorism.
Transport Canada should focus more on hiring highly trained security professionals in airports instead of more expensive technology, St. John said.
“We’ve flirted with the idea of machines that can spot everything . . . but we’ve never developed proper human security,” he said. “In all intelligence matters . . . and counter-security . . . it’s always the personnel that find the problems — good, well-trained personnel who know what they’re doing and know what they’re looking for. If you’re not prepared to pay for these people and not prepared to put proper security in place, bombs are going to be let off.”
St. John has also long advocated for stricter security measures such as an outright ban on carry-on baggage, as well as a policy that prohibits passengers’ luggage from being on a flight if the owner isn’t — for any reason.
“I don’t understand why a country like Canada that’s so good militarily and has got so many techniques it has developed in war and conflict, cannot develop a proper security system,” he said. “It’s just simply a question of (terrorists) trying, before one of these things really works because of the poor defences. It was poor defences and bad airport security that led to 9/11.”

C'mon, the guy boarded an airline from Schiphol, Netherlands, next to Heathrow, U.K., and La Guardia and L.A.X, U.S.A., is the largest airport in the world. Keep in mind that in less than a week, it will be 2010. In 2010, the Dutch government will pull Dutch troops out of Afghanistan. I think this whole affair was a staged theatrics put on by the Pentagon to stir post 9/11 security hysteria among the Dutch in the hope that enough Dutch people will put enough pressure on their government to make their troops stay beyond 2010.
All eyes are on the Netherlands. If the Netherlands withdraws its troops from Afghanistan, it will be the first NATO country to do so. This will set a precedent. Canada, if our PM Harlot doesn't get his way, will pullout in 2011. Uncle Sam and that NATO clown Anders Fogh Rasmussen don't want this to happen.

Passengers say "it sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," and yesterday officials said Abdulmutallab's injuries were consistent with a firecracker size explosion. Officials now say the device may have been a condom containing a small amount of PETN.
The attacker appeared to believe that the powdered explosive was much more powerful, capable of destroying the plane. He also claimed to be affiliated with al-Qaeda, though officials now say they doubt that and he appears to have acted alone.

Sorry to ruin your mad Dutch conspiracy theory in one fell swoop - but the guy cleared security in Lagos, Nigeria. He then changed planes in Amsterdam. People don't go through security again when they change planes within the same terminal - so this has nothing to do with Schiphol airport or with Dutch security. If you are looking for a smoking gun - you better start looking in Lagos.

A friend of mine from Northern Ontario was doing a graduate degree in Minnesota about 15 years ago. US border bobbies stopped and detained him for several hours over a possession charge that occurred in Canada when he was still a teenager. A single marijuana cigarette possession charge, and ten or so years later they were all over him for it like flies at a picnic, and not in Bananada but the US. They can be serious assholes when they want to be. And today it's so sticky with having to have your papers in order at the border, you might think it was easier crossing borders in the former USSR. It is like people stop thinking or something these days, when presented with such crap.
If someone really wanted a plane taken out they could easily sit there on US soil with an underground purchased rocket launcher waiting for the plane to commence landing and then take it out, for a simple example of way more effective means to bring a plane down, if one wanted to.
Such an action, no matter who did it, was to mass panic and then control masses of people...globally...at best
