I never googled - I telegraphed an old union colleague who proudly served in the Boer War for some translation tips, and received the reply by snail mail! The very nerve...

jrootham

Where did you pick up the time machine?

Unionist

Got it by priority post from a friend who invented it in 2075.

Michelle

I just read your post, jrootham!  I'm so thrilled that I can do this!  It took me a minute but I got it!

Unionist, what is .----.?

Edited to add - never mind, got it in context.  Punctuation is next on my list of stuff to learn off by heart!

Hee!  I'm getting better at this!  Thanks for the practice - I love it that others are playing! :)

Okay, so are you guys using a translator or do you know Morse Code?

klaatubaradanikto?

Fidel

From the movie DTESS, when Klaatu tells them what to say to Gort in case of his[Klaatu's] death. The movie is really well known among sci-fi nerds in general. And it's legendary among UFO buffs who think DTESS is really a Hollywood documentary of events which actually took place. Hey, I'm breaking the rules here.

Michelle

Hee.  :)  That's awesome!

Okay, so the harder part is trying to decipher it when you hear it, so I've been using this cool practice tool to do that.  There's just one glitch with it, though - sometimes when it gives you a "2" and you get it right, it says you're wrong and that the right answer is "3".  But other than that, it's great!

I make sure I scroll down enough that I don't see the dots and dashes when it plays the sounds, so that way I'm not "reading" it but simply translating by listening.

I really should get to bed at some point tonight.

Have no idea what you're all babbling about but that was funny.

Michelle, one thing that helped me when I was originally learning code was to simply translate every sign I saw as I walked down the street - I got my ham ticket almost 35 years ago and I still find myself doing it subconsciously.

Unionist

I've been doing it subconsciously for even longer than that.

Hey, what are we talking about?

Michelle

Thanks for the tip, abnormal.  Actually, that's what I was doing last night, translating the titles of books, captions on posters around the house, etc.  I'm not too bad at that now, but the hard thing for me at the moment is hearing the signal and knowing the letter when hearing it.  I'm trying not to think of the dots and dashes visually, but to immediately go from sound to letter in my mind.  And I'm finding it difficult!  I have a background in music, though, so I should do all right, and be able to hear the pattern and think the letter soon.

Besides, you would think that those of us who are pretty good at sight-reading music would be pretty quick at translating Morse to words, even if you think of the visual dots and dashes, since with music, I find that I can simultaneously think of the letter and the sound and the visual note on the staff.  But then I realized that it's different - if someone played me a tune, I could probably jot it downon a staff, but it would take me much longer to think it out, even though I can sight read quite quickly.

I don't think I'm planning on getting a ham license (and if I'm not mistaken, I don't think you need Morse for it anyhow now, unless it's something like 5 wpm).  Although if I did want to get it, I'd certainlly have enough radio equipment to use!

There must be a catch to this, and I'm obviously missing something (Signals training in this takes weeks), but how can one learn Morse Code in one night?

First rule - they're not dots and dashes, their dits and dahs - so you say a letter as "dit dit dah dit" for example, not as "dot dot dash dot".  Do it long enough and you'll find yourself saying that string so it sounds very much like what you'd hear over the air.

When I learned I had a couple of tapes that actually played at ten wpm but the letters were formed at 15 wpm - that helped a lot - once I could handle that I started monitoring a couple of the ham bands and found someone that was sending just a little faster than I was comfortable - you eventually reach the point where you're actively seeking out the real code freaks.

Well, obviously I'm not fast at it.  What I mean is, I memorized all the letters and numbers and some punctuation in one night, and I can do (very slow) drills, one letter at a time so far.  If you don't believe me, ask radiorahim!

All those posts above?  I didn't use a translator for any of them, and I started learning the night I started the thread.

Seriously, if you sit down and just learn a few letters at a time and drill yourself, you can pick it up really fast.  Especially if you are in any way musical, which I think you are, right?

Think that's known as the "Farnsworth method" ... one of the online code trainers uses this method.

Are you still active "on the bands" abnormal?    I've been fairly inactive the last five years or so...but hope to re-activate...and get some major antenna work done in the spring.

Michelle is an amazingly quick study.   Perhaps one of her "post moderation" projects might be getting her ham ticket :)

abnormal

Not for years.

Hee, RevPlease, if I'd seen that last night, I'd have responded. :)  It would probably be quicker to use morse on regular cell phones for texting!

They do have an app for that! I just downloaded the free app but when I get good they have a HAM one that does the wpm people were describing earlier!
