He's got it right, except I'd add that the party died with the Sponsorship Scandal. It wasn't Martin, Dion, or Iggy that is responsible for the Liberal's malaise, it's Chretien and this entire Sponsorship mess. Canadians can't trust the Liberals anymore with power because of that scandal.

There's a parallel to be drawn here in BC.  The best party is never going to win.  And, if they win, they won't be the best party any more.  I voted Green for years.  Now I'm taking the plunge and not voting at all.

Must be a slow news day at the Sun.

Harper should call Liberals' bluff

NR, why must you continually post nonsense from the likes of Christina Blizzard? As if she had something interesting to say? What in the world did you think was there that was worthy of 20 seconds of anyone's time?

Why must you always waste ours along with your own?

The Liberals have shown Canadians by their past behaviour that they have nothing to say on the prorogation file that isn't hypocritical, having used it when it suited their fancy, except for the politically just plain dumb Paul Martin, and the Liberals should have the decency to keep quiet about it. Unfortunately for the rest of us Canadians that is not the Liberal style, so Canadians will continue to be suffocated by Liberal gobbledygook on the subject.

Prorogation should be deleted

This is not a uniquely Conservative abuse.

In 2003, one of Jean Chretien’s last acts as PM before turning over the limo keys to Paul Martin was to prorogue parliament.

By no coincidence at all, shutting down the Commons prevented auditor general Sheila Fraser from presenting parliament with her explosive report on the scandalous federal sponsorship program until two months later, well out of Chretien’s watch and firmly into Martin’s worst nightmare.

If Martin had called an election before parliament reopened in February of 2004, the Liberals would have gone to the polls without the sponsorship scandal over their heads, and almost certainly won a majority Liberal government.

All of which is just plain wrong on so many levels that even average Canadian voters who otherwise couldn’t care less about what politicians are saying in the Commons, are showing some anger towards Harper in the latest public opinion polls.

The recent protests against prorogation, and even the increasingly popular movement on Facebook, at the very least belie Harper’s contention that no one outside the media and academe is interested in the subject.

On Monday, the day parliament should have resumed sitting were it not for prorogation, the opposition parties predictably lined up at the microphones to bemoan parliament’s locked doors.

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff told reporters that while prorogation is a “legitimate procedure,” there should be new rules to prevent a prime minister from using it “to escape democratic scrutiny.”

Better still, why not just scrap prorogation completely?

At the risk of sending historians into the ceiling tiles, prorogation does nothing for anyone other than politicians who need to stop the fight long enough to get out of the ring.

It actually wipes out all legislation still making its way through the parliamentary process, shuts down all of the Commons committees in the midst of their work, and forces the government to waste time and money presenting a throne speech full of vacuous platitudes.

If politicians cannot be trusted with the power to suspend parliament by prorogation, it should be deleted.

A prime minister who can’t stand the heat should get out of the House, and call an election.

This is unbelievable.

The Liberals obviously have no shame whatsoever.

The Liberals have stacked the stupid useless unelected Senate ever chance the Liberals had, and now the Liberals are complaining about Harper doing it. Give us all a freakin' break.

Yes, it is. No Liberal government ever prorogued Parliament to avoid being replaced by a democratic coalition of the majority.

Your continuous repetition of Harperite propaganda from rabidly right-wing media is offensive, North Report. It is becoming very obvious that you don't belong here, and have nothing to contribute.

I am beginning to think North Report is a troll.  He constantly posts anti-Liberal talking points and whenever I try to be polite and objective with him he just posts more nonsense.  He also gives the NDP a bad image by positing ridiculous predictions and making it look silly.

I think it would help if NR stopped for a second, summed up what struck her/him about the article in question, and linked to it with a short passage, to help people decide if they wanted to read it or not.  I know a lot of the time I have already seen most of the clippings from National Newswatch, but if they were cited to make a point it would help the conversation here a bit better.

I'm not sure it's trolling, per se.  Unlike some other folks who's just showed up here recently.

NR is no more a troll than Debater is.... and he has been here longer by a year than Debater, so IMV such comments from Debater are extremely insulting and personally attacking of NR..

People have their own posting style and if others don't like it...too bad.

Perhaps the commentators on NR being a troll, should think about the fact that others may not like their posting style either, but have enough  maturity and/or respect for freedoms, not to comment on how they hate other's styles.

There is nothing in NR's posting actions that are against the rules, however, what is against the rules is people's personal attacks upon him.

I am hoping that you will acknowledge you were mistaken to say I was being sexist.  It is not right to falsely accuse someone of sexism, and I have politely asked you to take a look at the newspaper article and see that you misunderstood the orange pumpkin in a sea of blue analogy that The Edmonton Journal made.  I am not aware of any other women in Canada who have interpreted it the way you have.  It was meant as a positive for the NDP and Linda Duncan.

A perfect example why the Liberals are not the government.

Grit daycare plan a daydream

Ignatieff’s vow to ‘find the money’ for recycled Number One priority of Paul Martin just doesn’t ring true

In the category of the more things change the more they stay the same, it is tough to beat Michael Ignatieff’s recent promise that a Liberal government would make a national daycare program its top social priority.

“I have a passionate commitment to it,” Ignatieff told reporters this past week. “It was the first commitment I made on becoming leader, and I’m sticking with it.”

Ignatieff said it doesn’t matter that the federal treasury is already running $56 billion in the red: “We will find the money.”

“I’ve made it very, very clear, this is the Number One social priority of an incoming Liberal government.”

If all of this sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because it is nearly verbatim Paul Martin.

It has been almost six years since Martin campaigned to his only election victory, in part on a pledge that creating a national daycare program would be his “Number One priority.”

Two years later, the Liberals went down to defeat, Martin’s administration having been smothered under so many of the prime minister’s Number One priorities, he couldn’t decide what to do firs

But it's not even that, I think it's that we feel we're being lied to, and by our own government. If they've got something to hide, then ok, it's time to come out with the facts..."

LTJ, Greg Weston is worth reading, even if you only agree with his policy prescriptions sometimes.  His insight into the workings of politics is usually pretty bang on, he's well-researched when he writes on issues, and if he gets a good quote from a Liberal (as he did above), it can be quite interesting reading.  I don't need to only read people I agree with to learn something.  I just resent reading people with nothing to contribute.

I find a lot of what NR posts to be interesting, but as I said, I do think it could be précised a bit, with a short introduction on what's interesting about the posted item.  Be nice.

These Liberal clowns sound more and more desperate with each passing day.

Gotta love the comment section as well.

Libs would be 'crazy' not to force spring election, says pollster

Ekos pollster Frank Graves calls it Grits' best chance to 'get rid of this guy. He's very resilient, the economy is going to improve, Ignatieff is not going to get any better.'

A leading pollster says the Liberal Party would be "crazy" not to force an election this spring as Prime Minister Stephen Harper attempts to recover from his decision to suspend Parliament and other unpopular moves.

Ekos pollster Frank Graves made the comment during an interview with The Hill Times, acknowledging at the same time there are signs from Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff (Etobicoke-Lakeshore, Ont.) and party insiders that they prefer waiting, possibly until this fall, to topple the minority Conservative government.

Mr. Graves said the Liberals may never have a better time to take on the Conservatives. He said the economy is likely only to improve in the long term, public distrust of Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Calgary Southwest, Alta.) is growing and Mr. Ignatieff, who has not caught on with voters, is unlikely to be able to change his image regardless of what he tries and how long he waits.

OK, this is bad now:  the repeat Liberal candidate in one of their closest near-miss seats in Quebec last time is publicly shitting on Ignatieff at a reception for Denis Coderre.  I guess no-one told her that if you don't hang together, you hang separately.  It's an open seat, because the Bloc incumbent is retiring and both the Bloc and Liberals nominated some time ago, but I'm guessing the Liberals sense that their chance is slipping away there, if they're prepared to shoot the Leader publicly again:

Grit candidate questions Iggy's abilities

Nancy Charest wrote:

MATANE, Que. - Nancy Charest, a Liberal candidate from Quebec, has suggested that Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff does not have the ability to push for what is in the best interest of Quebecers.

Charest, the party's candidate for the riding of Mitis/Matane/Matapedia in eastern Quebec, made the comments during a cocktail reception for the Liberal Party on Feb. 18 in Matane, Que.

The event was held to bid farewell to former Liberal lieutenant Denis Coderre, who resigned after a dispute with Ignatieff.

"I believe Mr. Ignatieff understands our realities but he doesn't have the ability to give Quebec what it wants," Charest said during a speech.

Charest didn't hide her admiration for Coderre, who represents the Quebec riding of Bourassa.

"A person who allowed me to stay the course is Denis Coderre because of his authenticity and perseverance with these issues," she said. "He's my favourite!"

Doug

I hope Iggy signed her nomination papers already.

ottawaobserver

I don't think that gets done until the papers are filed with Elections Canada during a campaign, but regardless, she's been nominated and campaigning for at least a year now.  So, I'm thinking: this is what she's been hearing on the campaign trail.
