Harper should call Liberals' bluff

The Liberals have shown Canadians by their past behaviour that they have nothing to say on the prorogation file that isn't hypocritical, having used it when it suited their fancy, except for the politically just plain dumb Paul Martin, and the Liberals should have the decency to keep quiet about it. Unfortunately for the rest of us Canadians that is not the Liberal style, so Canadians will continue to be suffocated by Liberal gobbledygook on the subject. 

Prorogation should be deleted

This is not a uniquely Conservative abuse.

In 2003, one of Jean Chretien’s last acts as PM before turning over the limo keys to Paul Martin was to prorogue parliament.

By no coincidence at all, shutting down the Commons prevented auditor general Sheila Fraser from presenting parliament with her explosive report on the scandalous federal sponsorship program until two months later, well out of Chretien’s watch and firmly into Martin’s worst nightmare.

If Martin had called an election before parliament reopened in February of 2004, the Liberals would have gone to the polls without the sponsorship scandal over their heads, and almost certainly won a majority Liberal government.

All of which is just plain wrong on so many levels that even average Canadian voters who otherwise couldn’t care less about what politicians are saying in the Commons, are showing some anger towards Harper in the latest public opinion polls.

The recent protests against prorogation, and even the increasingly popular movement on Facebook, at the very least belie Harper’s contention that no one outside the media and academe is interested in the subject.

On Monday, the day parliament should have resumed sitting were it not for prorogation, the opposition parties predictably lined up at the microphones to bemoan parliament’s locked doors.

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff told reporters that while prorogation is a “legitimate procedure,” there should be new rules to prevent a prime minister from using it “to escape democratic scrutiny.”

Better still, why not just scrap prorogation completely?

At the risk of sending historians into the ceiling tiles, prorogation does nothing for anyone other than politicians who need to stop the fight long enough to get out of the ring.

It actually wipes out all legislation still making its way through the parliamentary process, shuts down all of the Commons committees in the midst of their work, and forces the government to waste time and money presenting a throne speech full of vacuous platitudes.

If politicians cannot be trusted with the power to suspend parliament by prorogation, it should be deleted.

A prime minister who can’t stand the heat should get out of the House, and call an election.

Ignatieff’s vow to ‘find the money’ for recycled Number One priority of Paul Martin just doesn’t ring true

In the category of the more things change the more they stay the same, it is tough to beat Michael Ignatieff’s recent promise that a Liberal government would make a national daycare program its top social priority.

“I have a passionate commitment to it,” Ignatieff told reporters this past week. “It was the first commitment I made on becoming leader, and I’m sticking with it.”

Ignatieff said it doesn’t matter that the federal treasury is already running $56 billion in the red: “We will find the money.”

“I’ve made it very, very clear, this is the Number One social priority of an incoming Liberal government.”

If all of this sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because it is nearly verbatim Paul Martin.

It has been almost six years since Martin campaigned to his only election victory, in part on a pledge that creating a national daycare program would be his “Number One priority.”
