do talking heads get paid?

I stumbled upon 'the rightwing agenda' with steve pakin other night and they were mulling over something or other. It was the usual blah blah, with the reactionary pov dressed up and lipsticked and with ribbons etc (though its oinks and grunts gave away its real identity)...anyway, Janice Stein, of the U of T(?) was there again, and it seems that rightwing explainer of why brute forces always get away with murder etc, and how cute steve harper is to the mama class(?) is constantly on the telly shilling for fascism, if you will,  and i wonder if she gets paid for her contributions to the misunderstanding of all the bs being sold us (on the taxpayers dime too!) I have no idea where to find out (i could call the Munk Centre, but...) anyway, thanks for anyone who knows how the media works  regards paying etc

Seeing oneself/having others see  is enough for talking heads no dirty cash need change hands.

Do you mind if I make a joke along the lines of "Is this your beautiful house?"

Please, in the name of all that is Steadfast & Holy, let me have the right band.

Yes, the talking heads who do regular commentary (including panels) are paid... scale usually... last I checked, CBC Television does this too. Radio panels usually not.

Ah Yes I was thinking of expert heads not plebian heads.

Michelle

Yeah, both radio and television pays their panel members and guests, but it's not a huge amount.  I've never done it but know others who have.  In fact, CBC posted the Collective Agreement with the Media Guild online somewhere recently, and it listed the freelance amounts there.  It's only maybe one or two hundred bucks, depending on how long the spot is.

Guests on Paiken get paid, but again, it's not very much.  He gets left-wing guests too, and they get the same pay that the right-wing guests get, so I doubt you're going to get much satisfaction out of complaints about right-wing people getting paid to appear on a panel.  Everyone does.

Michelle... damn, where is my cheque? Was a regular participant on local CBC radio panel for over two years, I think I got a complimentary coffee mug for getting up and going in-studio every Friday morning... I do know that the parallel panel on local CBC television got scale, but for the radio panel there was no payment. Perhaps you are thinking of stuff going out nationally.

A talking head who is also an academic gets to put her radio and TV appearances on her yearly report, and it might give a slight boost to her yearly merit increase. More importantly, one of the principal currencies among academics is ego-boosts and reputation, and appearances on TV pay handsomely in that currency.

Nothwithstanding the odd check from Navigator Inc.

Michelle

Huh.  Well, I just read the collective agreement the other day and I'm sure it said they pay people.  Also, I know someone who has been on a panel discussion on CBC and I think that person got paid a bit - not much, but a bit.  Go figure.  Maybe you have to be a member of the media guild or something?  I don't know.

pookie

I've appeared on the Agenda and on other shows, and never been paid.  I've been paid occasionally for columns, but never tv or radio.

Well, I think this talking head gets paid rather handsomely:

And you should hear him sing!

Goodness me, I though that Steve Pakin was a decent journalist employed at a public broadcasting station hosting a quite good public affairs show that tried to convey various points of view on vital issues? If I'm off, please correct.

*Che Guevera once said 'News is what they try to hide, all the rest is advertising!' Steve pakin was being paid $132 thousand/year way back in studio 2 day when goofy harris upset applecart by publishing all public salaries over $100g paid using taxpayer funds! pakin gets the money cuz he performs a valued service to mr pig, who runs this goddawful planet  and is aiming it straight down it appears (colour me cynical) mr pig loves serfdom, or something(?) 911 was an inside job. JFK was murdered by dulles and hoover etc. Hitler/mussilini were the saddam hussein of olden days. The allies, not Stalin, put up the 'iron curtain' and split up europe after dubia two in order to militarise/destroy socialism! Israel was a white european colony built in middle of the arabs. Within a year of fall of USSR, wages have fallen by over $1 trillion(?) just in the west....

[sigh] And here we go again with the same conspiracy theory nonsense that gets the left in a lot more trouble than it does the right...Embarassed

notice pakin, rex murphy, the '5th estate' peter mansbridge, allen greg, ms hebert and almost everybody else on CBC push the rightwing pov. Why can't someone push back? If anything has gone wrong in civilization since VE Day it surely is the systemic effort by reactionaries to take control of newsmedia until harper gets away wiith openly scheming to get the powers necessary to ruin the country more then it is already. Just like the reagan bush rightwing tapeworm destroyed USA until few care anymore what the boss-class does since it must end badly regardless. harper mocked canadians for refusing to indulge in murder of Iraq, in front of an enemy audience, and our media soft-soaped the treason for years... now the thug is on verge of majority. If you know how to stop the reactionaries, then maybe just do it. I knew in 1980 that only bloodshed could stop mister pig, but did nada and now it's almost too late. (if you think things are fine, then you natch disagree, for ex,  that having TO Sun editor complimenting max bernier for dismissing concern about climate alteration and doing that in face of massive left opposition, then there's no use arguing. There isn't an effective left, that i can see, and the planet is going to fail us)

the goddam olympics seem dressed up to make snakeye stevie look good! They were singing Canada's praises on the 'View' this morning. Stevie harper is da man

Stevie and Iggy, the left and right fists of the same corporate hoodlum.

I believe the original point could reflect on the anti-AGW and anti-science  financing mechanisms and not just a one night attack on intelligence at the Monk Centre. Is this thread off track on a serious issue such as the bulk financing of fundamentalism by the Harper recovery funds or tax dodges of the corporations to 'buy the gov't' with think tank 'research'? Class conflict a la K. Marx may not be as relevant as a growing divide between fundamentalists and secular society world wide and perhaps easier to control than the growing disparity in wealth (and would take heat off of the fat cats).

E.P.Houle

I always suspect those that mouth the phrase "conspiracy theory nonsense" to have never heard of the mafia, corporate malfeasance, intellegence agencies or KKR, whether they start their sentence with (sigh), put a smiley face at the end or not.  F*n lol, viva Che!
