The USA is starting to run away with the medal count extending their lead to 7-to-4 over Germany, athouigh Switzerland is leading in gold with 3. Canada is still technically in third place but don't appear to be accomplishing our mission of "owning the podium". Gawd!

If the Olympics are a snapshot of the times, then things are looking pretty grim in Canada. And it's your turn next, Britain
Look, the Canadian Olympics are an overpriced mess. So is every Olympics. Is Greece happy right now? What is China doing with 21 empty stadiums?
All Canadians can hope is that a snowboarder doesn't die in mid-air. Or that it doesn't over-snow which, believe it or not, is possible. Climate change is unpredictable. I enjoy the irony of seeing Stephen Harper, a hardline climate-change denier, presiding over a warm, wet Olympics.
Olympics are a snapshot of the times, and the times are pretty dire worldwide. Not Canada's fault really. From east to west, each of us will try our best. A very Canadian sentiment.

I opened my door yesterday to find a large package waiting on my steps. Turns out my mom back in Toronto had sent a huge package of Team Canada gear from HBC for my baby. The Canadian women's team just set an Olympic hockey record of 17, now 18, goals in a game and it's not even over yet.
Canada beat Slovakia 18-0. In one of the qualifying games to get to the Olympics, Slovakia beat Bulgaria 82-0.
Women's hockey at the international level is a complete joke. There's no way this should be an Olympic sport.

I don't understand the difference either, the hockey is a farce, only 2 teams ever have a chance to win, I think I remember the safety of ski jumpers being mentioned, but thats gotta be crap, and besides we learned from the luge that a focus on safety was severly lacking.

The reason I consider women's hockey a joke at the international level is that there are only two countries - Canada and the United States - where enough women play hockey to actually have a reasonably good team. There's no real "competition" at all. The whole tournament will be Canada and the USA destroying every team they play by scores around 18-0 and then playing each other in the gold medal game.
In the 2004 summer Olympics, the American women's softball team outscored their opponents by a combined total of 51-1 and that (a total lack of meaningful competition) is why the IOC decided in 2005 that women's softball would be eliminated from the summer Olympics (the 2012 Olympics will no longer include that sport).

- The Canadian women outscored their opponents 36-1 (which is getting pretty close to the American women's softball cumulative score of 51-1)
- The American women outscored their opponents 18-3
- The Swedish women outscored their opponents 15-9
- The German women were outscored by 2-9
- The Swiss women were outscored by 1-12
- The Italian women were outscored by 1-31
And that left only two "middlin" teams (Finland, which outscored their opponents 10-7, and Russia, which was outscored by 6-16).
There were similar results in [color=red]2002[/color] preliminary games: The Canadians outscored their opponents by 25-0 and the American outscored their opponents by 28-1 and only one other team scored more goals than goals against (Finland, 7-6). The rest of the teams were badly outscored.
It looks like [color=red]2010[/color] will be a repeat performance: After one game, the Americans outscored its opponent 12-1 and, after two games, the Canadians have outscored their opponents 28-1.
Best bet? Canadians GOLD, Americans SILVER, and Swedes BRONZE.

Is curling an olympic sport? I used to curl in Ottawa, my mother was a winning Skip at the Ottawa Curling Club (there's a trophy that used to be awarded in her name). I curled at the RA Curling Club (the RA was a club set up members of the civil service). I used to travel between Ottawa - Quebec City - Trois Rivieres to curl and often just to watch. That's almost 40 years ago, which probably indicates just how old I am. I've been spending all my time outdoors in the cold these past few weeks working on renovations to my house, I'll probably be old and arthritic when I'm finished.

Men's baseball also doesn't really work as an Olympic sport because unlike hockey, the players are not given leave from their professional teams in order to participate. I mean, how many South Koreans are there playing major league baseball? I didn't see the Dominican Republic on your list, Sven, and they certainly didn't win a medal but if I were putting together a list of the best players, Dominicans would probably occupy a large number of the spots.
