Wasn't that a great performance by Marianne St-Gelais on the kid's 20th birthday.

The Quebecois contingent of Team Canada is saving Canada from a medal rout at these Left Coast Olympics.  Tongue out

Two from Quebec

Two from Alberta

one from BC and one from Ontario.

Just saying.

So wait, the wealthier provinces seem to be better able to provide sufficient luxury so that people can commit their time to physical development and playing games.

Oh boo hoo!

Another thing for Canadians, our planet's biggest whiners, to whine about. Wink

Canada has elbowed its way into a 3rd place tie with France for 7 medals, but the USA now has 15 medals and is pulling away from the rest of the pack.

Maybe all the Canadian olympic winners will donate 50% of their first year's income to the province of BC's poor and lower middle class, who will be bearing the brunt of the costs of these career advacement and corporate rip off games?

they are leaving countries like Greece broke in their wake, so maybe host countries had better start charging  a surcharge of the Olympians who win medals, and the sponsoring corporations, kinda like an extended income tax, if you make (b)millions primarily because of tax payer subsidies, you pay a % back to the host country who now  has massive debts that they would not have incurred.

Bookish Agrarian

Very, very few Olympic athletes make much money, including medal winners.  Most would be lower middle class at best.  They might make a bit on endorsememts, but again that is a crap shoot and most of that will go back into training, not living it up on the Riveria.

Of course there are a few exceptions, like the NHL hockey players, and a few others like Shaun White, but then he made his money through the X Games route, not as an Olympic athlete.

remind remind's picture

Oh Okay, I will tell the millionaire ex-Olympians that they are not supposed to be wealthy, just here in BC alone,  and given the surnames and the dynastic  quantity of those in this Olympics today for Canada alone,  as for lower middle, ya right!

Bacchus

Can you provide a link that proves their salries? I actually have heard that some are well off and most are not. But it would be nice to see proof for both claims and if its one or the other

Oh puleeze look at the discussions about how much Phelps was going to make.....

The non-medalists make nothing much, but the medalists sure do.

And of course they can andalso go onto good paying media jobs analyzing their sport, an even politics.

hell they train hard, and  perhaps deserve what they make,  but if Olympics are going to destroy the host country or in our case province, then things needs to be reconsidered, as they are making their millions of off the backs of the taxpayer.

NorthReport

There's a very simple solution to all this financial unfairness, Olympics or otherwise, and that is to create a very progressive taxation structure in Canada. Too bad we don't have one, and we probably will never have one again, if we really ever had one. Those days are long gone, and every day we move further and further away from a decent taxation system in Canada. The rich know what they are doing. The rest of us just plain don't, or we would have addressed it a long time ago eh, as we outnumber the rich by at least 100 to 1. Good ole Canadian democracy at work, eh!

MAYSIE, MAYSIE COME QUICK... Lou is breaking through the indoctrination and suggesting that everything coming out of Alberta is not necessarily bad. Central Canadian Overlordism* itself is threatened!!!

Phelps is ane xception that proves the rule Im afraid. He won a ton of medals and since america loves heroes, he will make a ton. The rest? not so much. Nancy kerrigan won silver and works doing ice capades and the like. Wheres her millions?

There my example wiped out yours. Wheres the rest? You're starting to sound like those posters who post 1 example to refute a ton of data.

I would prefer to see statiscal data soing what the average is at least

ETA to remove inappropriate analogy

Ice Capades and its ilk does not pay well? Who knew.

Oh, I guess she, Nancy, will have to survive on her ET gig then.

I suppose I could travel down the road a bit and ask Nancy Green how she likes being a millionaire, or Silkan.

Or Kevin Martin, I suppose. Or even Sale and Pelltier.

yes, I guess I will have to agree Olypinain medal winners are hard done by, just like our non-tenured professors......

Bacchus

Glad you agree. And yes Ice Capades actually doesnt pay that much (as in 50k or so but not millions or even half millions)

Bookish Agrarian

Through the weirdness of life I have known 4 elite athletes.  3 were Olympians and one a pro football player.  The CFL player made a decent living, sort of of, but certainly not profound and the 3 Olympians worked part-time while training to make ends meet.  I have heard a number of CFLers have had to take on jobs too to get by.

Sure a very small number of top end athletes in a very tiny number of sports might make millions or even hundreds of thousands in endorsments.  Most medal winners will not.   The payment for a Cold FX commercial is not going to put anyone on millionaire drive.

There is lots, and lots of money that gets ripped out of communities during the Olympics, but the vast majority of athletes are not involved in that   It is like blaming everyone at a demonstration for the actions of a few hooligans.

Shes lucky then. My friend (who axctually got me to come here in the first place) has done a award winning show, several commercials and lives on his freelence editorial job for tops 30k

Could Canada survive a loss to the Swiss hockey team in the preliminary round?  Oh my God! Laughing

If we lose we'll have to blame Ignatieff as apparently he couldn't decide who to support - Canada or Russia? Wink

Hell, even if an athlete managed to wring $500,000 out of the Olyimpics experience, 40% to 50% already goes to taxes.  Then, they go back to their day job at Home Depot.

So, what's the beef?

Sven Sven's picture

Maybe those greedy medal winners should be forced to melt down and sell the bullion in their medals?  According to an analysis I read today, the bullion in a gold medal is worth about US$500 and the bullion in a silver medal is worth a little over half that amount.  Then, after they sell it, the goverment should hit those greedy bastards with at least a 50% tax whack.

Whaddya think?

Why are we taxpayers paying for these people's hobbies?

My guess?  Most of the "taxpayers" who are complaining about taxes going to this event probably aren't paying a helluva lot of taxes.

Just sayin'...
