USA is smokin' the opposition, now owning 20 medals, distantly followed by Germany with 11 medals, Norway with 10 medals, and then Canada tied for 4th place with France, each with 7 medals.
I sort of hope that the results continue to be so lopsided, makes the games even more farcical.
Especially after "Own The Podium" spent $117 million over the last five years on Canadian athletes to win more medals than any other country.

I sort of hope that the results continue to be so lopsided, makes the games even more farcical.
Well, there are still a lot of medals yet to be won. But, even if the results do end up being "so lopsided," it's still a hell of an accomplishment for a country of only 33 million people to do capture so many medals.
Besides, everyone knows that the only medal that really counts to most Canadians is a gold medal in hockey!!

That's it Sven. When you consider the population size, the money allocated to athletes and the amount of capital behind them, clearly the US will be favoured to get the most medals. There is a much larger pool of athletes to pick from, and more financial support for those athletes.
All that considered, Canada is doing well.
BTW, did anyone watch the pairs skating? China was magnificent! 1 and 2nd place.

When you consider the population size...
Population size is probably a relatively unimportant factor. China would be running the show, and the Russians would be doing much better than they are (and Norway, with a population of a mere 4.6 million, wouldn't even be on the radar).
Probably the biggest factors are (1) the cultures and (2) the relative wealth of the countries.

Anyone watch the men's 30km pursuit today? I've never watched a cross country skiing race so closely before...it was absolutely captivating. The Swedes were wonderful. If what they did was based on a pre-race strategy, it was brilliant.

Yeah, I watched the bobsled where the Canadians went upside down, then the 30 km x-country, and finally Canada beat Great Britain in curling - looks like Canada will get the gold in curling. Nothing else on the telly.

Nothing else on the telly.
Well, I'm hoping that the USA v Canada men's hockey game on Sunday is on the tube here on NBC. But, our live coverage during the day is pretty bad -- so, it may not even be on TV here in the states. 
However, that may be a good thing. With all of the veteran NHL stars on the Canadian team and an American team made up of youngsters, I think it'll be a 6-1 game for Canada.

I'd never really watched speed skating before. What the Koreans did, overtaking in tandem the Canadians in the last lap (or second to last) looked like strategy. And then for Ohno to slip in there, too, like he was piggybacking on that momentum (psychological surprise?) Good on them, but I can't help but think that was the game plan for the Koreans.

I hope you are right, but it's far from a done deal.
The way curling works, as long as you are in the top four, it doesn't matter too much what order you place in.
The team from Great Britian has beaten Kevin Martin in their previous four matches. The fact Martin came out on top tonight doesn't mean he can repeat that in a final - but here's hoping.

In the past I've preferred women's hockey at the olympics because the players aren't a bunch of millionaire prima donnas. I recall one year in which one of the women players (after winning the gold) was skating around the ice with her child in her arms. When was the last time you saw that in the NHL?
However, so far I have to admit that the women`s hockey has been a little too one sided to make for interesting viewing. The shaky play of the men`s team adds a certain chance factor that makes for more exciting games. Sure the team should have trounced Switzerland, but the game did have me on the edge of my seat.

Hmmmmmm...I think their confidence is justified. I just don't see them getting beat -- they are not going to lay an egg like the American basketball team did when they lost to Greece in the 2006 Olympics.

I have to admit that the women`s hockey has been a little too one sided...
Let's see:
Canada 18 - Slovakia 0.
Canada 10 - Switzerland 1.
Canada 13 - Sweden 1.
So, so far, the Canadian women have outscored their opponents 41 - 2.
If that's a "little" one-sided, I'd sure hate to see "very" one-sided.
Women's hockey is a snooze fest.

More on women's hockey:
As noted above, Canada beat Switzerland 10 - 1.
Switzerland later beat the Chinese 6 - 0 (so the Chinese team really has to suck relative to the Canadians).
Finland squeaked by the Chinese 2 - 1 (so, Finland is about as good as the horrible Chinese team).
And, now, Canada plays Finland to see who goes to the Gold medal game?
In terms of being a competitive event, it's a total farce and it's almost, but not quite, as bad as women's softball was before the IOC mercifully eliminated the sport from the Olympics.

I love this kind of hockey where we don't have the stupid fighting that occurs in almost every game in the NHL it seems.
How dumb can we be expecting a bunch of players who play for different teams to jell together in such a short period of time. Canada would be better off sending some team that plays together all the time. Maybe leading up to the Olympics next time we could arrange an elimination process and send the best team in Canada instead of the best players from different teams.
And the woman skating around with her child conjures up such a beautiful image - wish I had seen that.

I think climate also has something to do with which countries do well in winter sports. And yes, look at tiny socialist Norway punching well above its weight in the medal count.
