Who is this guy?

As a new person posting on this site, I figured I'd better give some background.

I was born and raised as an only child in rural western America, in a household that was strongly, rabidly conservative (John Birch Society). As a child I was subjected to physical, sexual, and emotional abuse by both parents. After serving in the Nam war, I declined to return to the states, and instead bummed around in what is commonly called the 3rd world. I met a lovely lady, married her and started a family, but lost both wife and child to political violence.

After digging myself (mostly) out of that hole of despair, I attended University, got a degree, and managed to work off-and-on for a few years. I now consider myself semi-retired, and a non-American American. My views are based on my background, my experiance in the world, and the reasoned arguements I have been blessed to find.

Here's hoping for opportunities for reasoned debate.

Here's hoping for opportunities for reasoned debate.

Very little of that here, most posters are prisoners of ancient political dogma and worse.

But striving for reason to lift us out the the slough, cy.  (And what can be worse than "ancient political dogma..."?)  :)

Not including yourself, of course, eh conrad?

By the way, Thomas, did you know that your moniker/name here refers to a mercenary warrior élite from the past?

Yeah, some of us are really unfashionable. It's horrendous Wink

Thank God we have someone like you who has graciously devoted almost two months of your no doubt precious time to freeing our minds. Which reminds me, conrad, can I get a day pass tomorrow? There's a pack of smokes in it for you. And who knows, maybe...

Yep...and while it ain't the name from my birth certificate, it has been a name by which I'm known.

Further introduction: A topic on which I am quite passionite is typecasting....specifically the tendency to make assumptions about individuals based upon a group membership. While this is often seen in areas such as sexism and racism (where it is justly despised) it is often seen in many other areas of interaction. I believe that many of us have come to understand that it is unacceptable to indulge in the evil of assuming that a black is stupid because he is black, that a woman is silly because she is female, etc etc. But what about assumptions such as a soldier is evil because he is a soldier....

Could be misled, perhaps...?  Needs a job? (some fall into that category, particularly in economic downturn). Me old dad did that in 1914.  When he took the king's shilling he was holding onto a day's wage.

By the way, didn't  gallowglass have a particularly Irish beginning? Must have scared the bejazus out of the bog cutters.

Hi Thomas. Welcome to babble. I think we both know why you're here, and rather than perpetuate a board war, let me just say, as a moderator, that if you don't violate the policy you're welcome to stay.

Small hint: referring to someone who's Black as "a black" is a bit of a giveaway. That hint's for free, and you only get one freebie from me.

Hey conrad. My political dogma is probably in what you consider the "worse" category. Thanks. From you that's high praise. Why do you post here again?

Not me!  My dogma got run over by my karma.

PS: I'm half-Yanqui myself; my dad voted for Richard Nixon in '68 and Mike Harris in '95.

Um Sineed, I don't think you can be a babbler anymore.

Joke!

Clearly you come from a contaminated gene pool.

I prefer to swim in the deep end :)

Thomas, there is reasoned debate here.  It takes time to find what posters engage in that most often.  Not all of us are reasoned on every topic, and not all of us are irrational on all topics.

But, if you are patient, I think you will find the conversation here a cut above the vast majority of places.

Yeah, not to mention even black women soldiers!

And here it begins.... *yawn*

Yes, we must be "typecasting" because we make assumptions about someone based on the profession they choose. Just like we typecast people because of the colour of skin skin they choose.

Farewell

It is obvious that my learning curve to become a welcome member would be too steep.

Classy move.

Slumberjack

Tsk tsk.  The cut and run crowd.  Well when things become obvious, where before they might have appeared somewhat less so, isn't that a form of learning?

Caissa

Didn't you mean for posts 16 and 17 team to be in the teaching thread?

Gallowglass was sort of a giveaway moniker. In fact his first appearance, saying that the word "teabagging" made him twitchy, was the most psychologically  threatening moment I've experienced here.

Consider yourself well-protected, George.

And Thomas, what can I say. We barely knew you, and what we knew was more than enough.

*giggle* seriously, thanks all for the morning laugh......
