The next big showdown: Friday's gold medal game between Canada and the USA in women's hockey.
To make it to the gold medal game, the Canadian women slipped by Finland 6-0 and the American women squeaked by Sweden 9-1. So much for those naysayers who keep insisting that there's "no meaningful competition" in women's Olympic hockey!!

Sven - I know. Seriously, I feel guilty about watching any of it, but it's hard to resist - especially the hockey. I suppose I should resolve to ignore the rest of it, because I do agree with the political arguments against holding it in Vancouver.
I actually wasn't going to watch any of it. But my son was so excited about watching the opening ceremony, and I didn't want to say he couldn't watch it, so then of course I watched with him, and it's been kind of downhill from there.

Actually, against my own wishes, I did end up watching a bit of Olympics last weekend. We went skiing with in-laws, and the little suite we were in had a television, and of course when kids see a television, they turn it on. So I saw our first gold, and some skating. Thing is, I don't really like sports at the best of times.

Assuming that the Americans do not win any more medals, the German do not win more than 2 more medals, and the Norwegians do not win more than 9 more medals, then Canada will have to win about 1 out of every 6 remaining medals to take the overall lead.

Beauceville is a town of 6,226 people southeast of Quebec city. Marie-Philip was the youngest member of the Canadian team. She was no Joannie Rochette. No one expected this. Yet 1,500 people had packed the municipal arena to watch on giant TV screens, just to see Marie-Philip play in the Olympics. Boy, did they get their money's worth, when she scored both goals!

Good news for USA: They will beat their 34-medal record from the 2002 Winter Olympics (with at least one more medal on Sunday).

Norway only has about four million people and, as a percentage of the total populations represented by those 80-some countries, Norway's "proportionate share" of the medal take is only a fraction of a single medal. But, so far, they've raked in 20 medals (or about 20 medals more than they are "entitled" to -- you know, fairness-wise).

Two more gold medals in snowboard slalom and speed skating pursuit. Canada is now guaranteed to surpass the medal count from Torino. Good shot at a medal in men's bobsled too.
"Own the Podium" suddenly doesn't sound like so much of a failure after all:
- Canada leads with gold medals won
- Canada leads with medals won in women's events
- These are the most medals ever for Canada in any Olympics (other than Los Angeles in 1984)
In fact, with 12 gold medals, Canada has a good shot at tying or beating the record for most gold medals ever, which is 13, held by Norway (2002) and the Soviet Union (1976).

Why?
We're not supposed to compete, win or be happy. Losing is best, but if a medal has to be won make it a bronze at the most. If for some horrible reason a Canadian actually wins gold, they should hang there head and offer to it to the last place finisher.
I'm happy Canada has made an effort and applied resources to something and it's been a success. I'd like us to make the same effort on other problems too.

But that's kinda my point: It is amazing that a tiny little country like Norway, with a mere 4.6 million people (less than the state of Minnesota), is able to produce 85 Olympic-caliber athletes for these games (which is one Olympian for every 55,000 people -- about the same numer of people who live in my suburb). China, by contrast, has 1.3 billion people and it sent 88 Olympic-caliber athletes to these games (which is about one Olympian for every 15 million people).
To put it another way: If China sent athletes to the Olympics at the same rate as the Norwegians do, the Chinese would be sending over 23,000 athletes to these Olympic games!!
