should the best actor Oscar become gender-neutral ?

hmmmm... how long before people are counting heads (60-40%, 30-70%, etc.) as to whether men or women win more best actor awards?

and of course, nominations would be minutely scrutinized for gender balance rather than dramatic value

... as a member of the Academy, I vote No

[...] separate is not equal. While it is certainly acceptable for sports competitions like the Olympics to have separate events for male and female athletes, the biological differences do not affect acting performances. The divided Oscar categories merely insult women, because they suggest that women would not be victorious if the categories were combined. In addition, this segregation helps perpetuate the stereotype that the differences between men and women are so great that the two sexes cannot be evaluated as equals in their professions.

Today, the number of female-run production companies, female directors and great roles for women continues to increase. Four of the five films represented in this year's best actress category center on strong female characters.

As women gain more influence in Hollywood, even the term "actress" is disappearing. Just as stewardesses are now called flight attendants, many actresses now prefer to be called actors. The Screen Actors Guild has eliminated the term "actress" in the presentation of its awards, instead using "female actor." Perhaps, as the term "actress" falls further out of favor, the award-granting organizations will be forced to acknowledge that male and female actors do indeed have the same occupation.

I'm inclined to agree with the OP.  I can't imagine the precise parity (or lack of) not becoming the focus of the award.  Biological differences don't affect a human's ability to be a member of the legislative assembly, either, and yet anywhere women don't win  50% of the seats that's seen as a problem.

On the other hand, if everyone agrees that a potential situation such as the award being won by a man for five years running wouldn't be a problem, then it could be worth considering.

How about we just get rid of the Oscars completely and all other award shows too.....

... they're on because people like them and watch them

there was a news thing about the good TV viewership for hockey in the U.S. during the Olympics, and at one point last Sunday ratings even ... matched the Grammies(!);

I would  have to be chained to the chair to watch the Grammies, but millions and millions want it. Go figure Frown

Most people are  informed that they should like them, so they do.

Distract the masses from what they should be concerned with,  and interested in, is a useful propaganda ploy, eh!

p-sto

I've tried watching the house of commons on television and it's at least as stupid as the oscars.  Unfortunately the decisions of the house actually matter.

Absolutely not, men and women play different roles in Hollywood movies, and making the ward gender neutral would introduce a bias as to who wins.

It's not as though best actor is more prestigious than best actress.
