Long time reader, first time poster

Hi Babblers -

(This is actually my second attempt at posting.  My first post was witty and clever - you would have loved it.  Amongst other failings, I find technology challenging.)

I've been reading the threads here for some time and learn a tonne from them.  So, to start, thanks to all the regular posters and especially to the moderators.  I generally read the active topics, and also check in at the international news, feminism, anti-racism and aboriginal forums.  And any thread about gardening.

A bit about me ... I have been actively involved in the antiwar movement - peripherally involved in women's rights, poverty and housing, and addiction issues - in Vancouver for about 10 years.  I've been less involved these last couple of years as I parent two young children.  I think I'm strong on commitment and practical effort, not so much on theory.  I'm not sure how much I'll post (I'm out of my league - wow, you're a smart bunch), but thought I should say hi at least.

When posting, I'll try to remember that, while I may think I know some of you, you don't know me at all.  I'd like to just say, though, that from my perspective on the outside, it does feel like you've built a great community - notwithstanding various difficulties.  That, and I think Maysie, oldgoat, and Michelle are rockstars.

Hi Ripple. Welcome to babble. Sounds like you will have a lot of great things to contribute, however often you're able to.

And me, a rockstar? You are too kind. Do you really wanna hear me sing Bohemian Rhapsody? I didn't think so. Tongue out

And I hope we're all able to get to know you.

P.S. We're not that smart. oldgoat gets random sentence generator to write most of his posts.

Socialism horns politics past an advice. The concentrate poses. The temporary exit abides throughout a wiser judge. Politics monitors a flying agony within a counter cue. How can the agony service politics ? An air memory rattles next to the impending chief.

Holy crap, it works! So that's how unionist has been sounding so smart all these years.

Dude, are you even going to say hi to Ripple?

Can't take you anywhere, OG. Sheesh.

Tongue out

How long before someone mentions the postmodern generator? Who am I kidding--it was always already (re)cited.

Welcome to Ribble, Rapple! Er--I hope you know what you've got yourself into...

Welcome to babble, Ripple!

And now, back to business:

Complaint letter about oldgoat

Quote:

Because many of the things I'm about to say regarding oldgoat have already been beaten into the ground, I will try to keep this letter short. The points I plan to make in this letter will sound tediously familiar to everyone who wants to demand a thoughtful analysis and resolution of our problems with oldgoat. Nevertheless, he has so frequently lied about how society is supposed to be lenient towards footling doomsday prophets that some weaker-minded people are starting to believe it. We need to explain to such people that oldgoat's methods are much subtler now than ever before. Oldgoat is more adept at hidden mind control and his techniques of social brainwash are much more appealingly streamlined and homogenized.

We have a dilemma of leviathan proportions on our hands: Should we disseminate as widely as possible all of the information we have regarding oldgoat's hypersensitive, self-deceiving theories, or is it sufficient to create a world in which racialism, emotionalism, and Bonapartism are all but forgotten? Well, I asked the question so I should answer it. Let me start by saying that oldgoat's threats are malodorous but reflective of the localized normative attitudes among wicked proponents of nativism. Let's remember that.

I have one itsy-bitsy problem with oldgoat's propositions. Videlicet, they sugarcoat the past and dispense false optimism for the future. And that's saying nothing about how putrid Philistines are more susceptible to his brainwashing tactics than are any other group. Like water, their minds take the form of whatever receptacle oldgoat puts them in. They then lose all recollection that the last time I told oldgoat's lieutenants that I want to give the needy a helping hand as opposed to an elbow in the face, they declared in response, "But the best way to reduce cognitive dissonance and restore homeostasis to one's psyche is to encourage individuals to disregard other people, to become fully self-absorbed." Of course, they didn't use exactly those words, but that's exactly what they meant. Finally, no letter about oldgoat would be complete without mention of some of the entirely sappy schemes that he supports. Although there are a plenitude of examples from which to choose, the most sappy would have to be his proposal to cause riots in the streets. That's the sort of thing that keeps me up at night.

ETA: Some wags have suggested that I utilized a random complaint generator to pen the aforementioned missive. I indignantly rebuff that allegation with the contempt and comprehension that it richly deserts.

Welcome ripple.

I must say I rather enjoy being a dilema of Leviathan proprtions. And my teachers all said I'd never anount to anything.

Welcome. Lotsa anti-war views here, so you should feel at home. Good to have another left coast voice on here.

You don't have to reply, of course, but why "Ripple" ?

"She", I think. Ripple listed women's rights as an area of activism, as a parent with 2 kids.

Welcome ripple.

And unionists complaint letter is a gem.

I think. I have some bones to pick though. Where were they now?

Serenade from William Shantner called for here.

You're right, but couldn't men parent and be active on women's rights?

And because you asked ... Trying to be too clever by half.  Mostly Ripple is a Grateful Dead song ... "If I knew the way, I would take you home."  Mr. Ripple suggested "Meanie" but unfortunately for him that's  my at home persona!

Yep. And hello from an old campaigner. " Mr. Ripple" jests, big time, I'll bet.
