Vander Zalm's anti-HST petition - will you sign it?

The BC HST [tax] is going to hurt people. Premier Campbell is hoping we swallow it, but it would be a shame on us if we do. There are other ways to pay for this government's mismanagement of the budget. Most of us would prefer carrying a little more debt for a few years... money can be found in lots of places, we have to force them to go looking at least, instead of allways coming to the lower and middle income citizens for it. Tax the derivatives or something.

Former B.C. premier Bill Vander Zalm is aiming to get rid of the tax by forcing the province to hold an initiative vote on the issue, but first, he needs to collect thousands of signatures on a petition supporting his draft bill.

So far, the veteran campaigner has signed up nearly 2,000 volunteers from ridings across B.C. to help him collect the estimated 300,000 voter signatures required to trigger an initiative vote, which is similar to a referendum.

The tax will raise the price of just about everything we spend money on - the basics as well as the discretionary.

There is going to be cuts to education, health care, and other public services including environmental protection and monitoring, and welfare. The lower income people are once againg getting hit the hardest.

I intend to sign the petition, will you?

FIGHT HST INITIATIVE PETITION FIRST DAY LAUNCH EXCEEDS ALL EXPECTATIONS

Vancouver - Bill Vander Zalm's Fight HST Citizen Initiative petition launch yesterday exceeded all expectations for first day sign ups, says the former BC premier.

Elections BC would only issue the petitions on April 6th, so the first day was spent madly rushing to print and get petitions into the hands of canvassers. However, despite the challenges, thousands of signatures were gathered at several locations throughout the province, with Ft. St. John taking the prize with over 1,800 sign ups in one day - a new provincial record.

Alvin Stedel, Regional Organizer for The Peace, said they started at 8:00am yesterday and weren't able to leave until 10:30pm when the deluge of voters slowed enough to do a final tally. They ended the day with a total of 1,820 signatures - over half the amount required for the North Peace's overall petition target of 3,387 signatures representing 15% of registered voters there.

"We were very pleased, and expect to reach our targets in both the North and South Peace within a couple of weeks here,' said Stedel.

Vander Zalm says the kick off meeting in Point Grey was also a huge success. There, over 475 people signed the petition for the premier's home riding, and joined hundreds more to pack the Auditorium of Kitsilano High School to hear speeches on how the Citizen Initiative petition strategy will work to defeat the HST.

"We were able to gather 10% of the required signatures for Point Grey in just one day! Once our troops get their petitions distributed to them and begin knocking on doors, we will increase that number dramatically in the next 89 days of the petition period," Vander Zalm explained.

Vander Zalm says similar results will happen in other areas of the province once canvassers receive their petitions and are able to begin knocking on doors and taking signatures.

"Point Grey and Fort St. John are just the tip of the ice berg. These ridings, as far apart geographically and demographically as you can find in BC, prove that the desire on the part of all British Columbians to get rid of this hated sales tax is both wide and deep," Vander Zalm concluded.

The Citizen Initiative to repeal the HST requires the signatures of 10% of registered voters in all 85 electoral districts in BC to be successful. Fight HST is targeting 15% or better in each riding to ensure a safe margin of victory. Signature gathering by canvassers will take place mostly on evenings and weekends, with some central location sign-ups planned for each region.

Vander Zalm takes HST Town Hall tour to Vancouver Island this week

Delta - Fresh on the heels of successful meetings in White Rock and Maple Ridge where thousands of voters turned out to sign the petition to end the HST, Fight HST Leader Bill Vander Zalm is taking his Town Hall tour to Vancouver Island.

"We are getting tremendous support now all across BC. What started as a movement to stop the HST has turned into an open revolt against an out of touch and arrogant government that refuses to listen to its own people," said Vander Zalm.

"We are coming to the southern, middle and northern parts of Vancouver Island to spread the message that democracy is not dead, and we have a plan to stop this hated sales tax in the Citizen Initiative -  a plan that all British Columbians can participate in," Vander Zalm concluded.

If I'm looking for a compass on an issue, Bill "if someone is able to work and refuses to do so, they had best pick up a shovel or I'll give them a shovel" Van Zalm, who last ran (and lost) for the "BC Reform Party," is not someone I'd look to.  Yet another example of how the NDP has lost the plot on the HST - we're consistently handing the issue of taxation to the looney tunes right wing.  This is never going to be a win for those who want a stronger Canada built on people paying for what we want.  We are letting hunger for NDP seats blind us to the fact the anti-HST undermines the role of government.  Forget the Party - is this helping our vision?

HST is a regressive tax. It taxes almost everything (in B.C.), thus will burden workers and and the petit bourgeoisie. It is a tax break for large and wealthy corporations and people. We've been here before: It's gone under names like Thatcherite economics, "Reganomics", the "Trickle down" theory of economics. It's been tried before and it doesn't work.

Inrtoduce a progressive tax or make existing taxes (more) progressive. Tax wealth. Tax luxury items.

HST showdown looms in B.C. legislature
http://www.kelowna.com/

The bill repeals the provincial sales tax to make way for the new harmonized sales tax (HST).

Liberal house leader Mike de Jong is hinting the government may invoke closure.

“I'm hopeful that [the NDP] will take their role as an opposition sufficiently seriously to see the bill go to committee stage for discussion and debate,” said de Jong. “If they don't, perhaps we'll help them with that decision.”

The bill was introduced on March 30, but it still has not received second reading.

De Jong said the New Democrats have already had weeks to debate the bill, and they've chosen to use their time focusing on different issues.

On Thursday, federal NDP leader Jack Layton said in Vancouver that he has written to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and asked him to delay implementing the tax until the anti-HST petition campaign and possible subsequent referendum in B.C. are over.

Most of the Liberal MLA's are drones and would jump off the Lion's Gate Bridge if Campbell told them to, and they are going down with this ship like Mulroney's MP's when the GST was brought in,  they where blown up federally,  I understand a couple of them are struggling with this and that could have big ramifications as one hole in the damn could lead to more, bet the farm that Campbell, Hansen, or any others in the Liberal Alpha group will continue with blinders on, If a guy like Lekstrom was to all of a sudden "grab a pair" others could follow and be part of history in B.C. instead of being nameless sheep in our history.

keglerdave

I remember being in high school when Bill Vanderzalm was premier of the province.  And back then thinking that this guy was loonietunes as the most right wing premier heading the most right wing government in BC history.  Yet not that long ago, there was the same "right wing extremist" standing beside Jim Sinclair talking about the offshoring of our shipbuilding industry, and then again speaking out against the government's stance on aquaculture.  And again, speaking out against the dismantling of BC Hydro.  All on the side of what's considered to be the centre left of the political spectrum.  Has the guy had a political viewpoint conversion, the likes that no one in history has?  No.  But what it does show people like me, and should show the lethargic slow to wake up electorate in BC, is just how extreme the Gordon Campbell so called "Liberals" have taken this province.  This entire HST issue almost has nothing to do with the idea of a consumption tax or not.  What it has to do with is the fact that Gordon Campbell and his arrogant band of butt kissers travelled throughout the province and openly LIED and DECEIVED the people of BC during the 2009 provincial election.

They purposely understated the amount of the deficit ("$425 Million and not a penny more").  A number that respected economist Helmet Pasteriuk openly mocked as being far understated.  Then when questioned on the HST, Campbell repeatedly said that it was something his government was not interested in taking part in.  Another lie that was bore out when it was revealed that less than 3 days after the polls closed, the BC Government was in discussions with the federal Finance department about how to go about implementing the HST.  THE BCNDP were pillioried in 1996 by Campbell for what he called the "Fudgit Budget" when budget estimates fell way short of what things really were like.  Rightly or wrongly, the BCNDP were cast by Campbell as a government with no mandate.  Because of this.  And yet Mr. Perfect spent months openly LYING AND DECEIVING the people of BC, and somehow its ok?  On both the size of the deficit and the HST.

With the HST, he's screwing people who are definite supporters of his, namely the Restaurant industry and a number of small businesses.  As well as screwing the average employed person in this province.  Not because he's bringing in the HST, but because of how he went about it, by LYING AND DECEPTION.  81 percent of the people in this province are against the HST. And unlike some of the more unpalatable things Campbell has pulled early in the mandates, this big f*ck you to the people has the chance of resonating to the next election date.

But back to my point about Vanderzalm.  As extreme as he appeared in the late 80s, he has absolutely nothing on Gordon Campbell and his band of neo con morons.  Its actually an example of how extreme the politics in BC have become.  When Vanderzalm looks moderate and takes moderate stances, standing beside people like Carole James, Bill Tieleman and Jim Sinclair, and sounds like the clarion horn of voice and reason, it shows you how bad things are in BC, and how utterly extreme Campbell is. If its not nailed down, its for sale.  And as for intergrity and truth during a campaign, hey tell the idiots what they want (aka BC Rail and now the HST) and they'll vote for you, no matter how big a liar you and your party is.

Don't get me wrong, I see where Vanderzalm's ulterior motive is.  All you have to do is look at who else is on the stage with him aside from the three I mentioned.  Chris Delaney is another concerned citizen present at alot of these rallies.  And the BC Conservative numbers are up.  What is that saying?  To me from a tactical point of view, its a good thing for the BCNDP.  But they need some help from within as well.  Its great to be utterly opposed to something but now we need an alternative, to stop Campbell from his usual mantra about the NDP being opposed to everything with no answers or new ideas.

I would also argue that Vanderzalm never touched Hydro, Ferries, ICBC or any of the other legacies left behind by previous administrations.  There was so far he would and could go, there was an understanding and caring with the electorate and the province as a whole.  When Campbell came along, all those constraints were thrown out the window alongside the ripped up Collective Agreements and the selling of the railway.  Don't get me wrong, I still see this initiative as a somewhat unholy alliance.  But when the centre right, the centre, the centre left, and the left are united in opposition against the lying Premier and his band of morons, that should tell you something about the leadership that Campbell bestowed on the province.  I would encourage everyone to sign the petition in your local riding, if not to be against the HST, then to send a message to our Arrogant, Out of Touch so called government, that we're sick and tired of being lied to by people who proclaim themselves to be "the most open accountable government in BC history."

I also think that if the HST hits a referendum, and Campbell loses, he should resign immediately.  Because his mandate will then have been quashed.

Fight HST signatures quadruple in third week to over 145,000

24% of Electoral Districts have met or exceeded Elections BC's threshold of 10% of registered voters signatures

Delta - Another 105,000 British Columbians signed the Fight HST petition to repeal the HST last week, bringing the total signatures reported as of Sunday, April 25, 2010 to 145,549 province-wide, says Chris Delaney, Lead Organizer for the Bill Vander Zalm Initiative petition.

"This is a significant increase over our Week 2 report, and shows the momentum continuing to build across the province. Twenty Ridings have met or exceeded the Elections BC threshold of 10% of registered voters signatures already, with seven of those reaching 15% or better. This is a phenomenal achievement in only two weeks of steady campaigning for signatures," Delaney explained.

Delaney says the big ridings so far are Cariboo-Chilcotin, Cariboo North, Parksville-Qualicum, Peace River North, Shuswap, Skeena, Fort Langley-Aldergrove, Langley, Abbotsford South, and Chilliwack-Hope, with Kamloops North, Nanaimo, Columbia River-Revelstoke, Boundary-Similkameen, Delta North, Saanich North and Victoria Beacon Hill all posting 3,000 signatures or more in each riding as well.

"The good news is we are getting strong numbers everywhere in the province. There is no single region or riding we are canvassing that is not getting strong results. We have now achieved over 48% of the total signatures required for a successful petition in just under 3 weeks. With 9 weeks left to go, we are on track to meet our internal threshold of 15% of registered voters' signatures in all 85 Electoral Districts in BC," said Delaney.

Bill Vander Zalm, the leader of the grassroots organization conducting the petition, says the only thing slowing his team down is the time it takes to gather the signatures, "Quite frankly, if most of our volunteers didn't have to work for a living, we would be done by now. These numbers are even more astounding when you consider the bulk of them were collected only on weekends."

"We will keep going until we reach the 15% threshold we have set for ourselves in every riding, or until Premier Campbell cries 'uncle' and agrees to withdraw the HST, whichever comes first," said the smiling former premier.

"The idea that the HST is a done deal that cannot be reversed is rapidly collapsing under the reality of a citizen revolt that has spread right across the province, and is now threatening to bring down the government with 'Recalls' if they don't listen to the people," said Vander Zalm.

Page 11, Section 42 of the CITCA Agreement signed between BC and Ottawa says: "The terms and conditions of this Agreement will continue in full force and effect, in accordance with and subject to the provisions of this Part, until the date that is specified by a Party in written notice that is delivered to the other Party setting out the Party's desire to terminate this Agreement."

"We thought it was important to reference the 'Termination Clause' of the HST Agreement for the premier, since he may want to avail himself of it very soon," Vander Zalm concluded.

no1important

The Initiative thing is a scam. It is just a 'suggested law' and gets treated like any other bill and Campbell has a majority plus it also says it only effects provincial jurisdiction and not federal.

There are going to be a lot of disappointed, mad and unhappy people when they realise after all the signatures and if it comes to a vote no matter what the HST will still be with us.

There are not enough libs or any that will vote No and the BC Lt. Governor general does not act in the peoples interest but the governments so he won't veto this. Were stuck with it.

It is good people are protesting this by signing petitions, BC/Canada has been lacking in that for a while, it will embarrass the government but Campbell will leave on his own or be pushed out and a new leader will take over and the libs will win again as there is no competent alternative anymore in BC. We need a new third party.

RANGER

To: All British Columbians
What began as a simple tax protest has turned into an outright demand for democracy from an increasingly out of touch and dictatorial government in Victoria.
Our petition has exploded onto the scene in BC, with tens of thousands of signatures in just the first two weeks. We have already met or exceeded our targets in a number of ridings around BC, but people continue to sign in an effort to send a bigger and bigger message to government:
"We want democracy! We want to be heard! We want the politicians we elect to serve us, not the other way around!"
Much of this movement is a reaction to the unbelievably arrogant and intractable statements by the premier and many of his MLAs. News 1130 Radio on April 15 reported the following statement by the premier: Premier Gordon Campbell says it doesn't matter how many signatures the "No" forces gather. "The HST has been done. We are moving forward with it..."
It doesn't matter how many citizens sign the petition? It doesn't matter how many people oppose his policy? It doesn't matter how many voters reject the direction of his government? They are going to do it anyway?
Does that sound like the Canada we all once knew? Does that sound like the freedom and democracy our ancestors fought and died for in two successive world wars? What is the point of electing MLAs to represent our wishes in Victoria if all they do is represent Victoria's wishes to us instead?
I want to encourage everyone who cares about democracy in BC to sign our petition. We had originally hoped to get 15% of registered voters' signatures (more than the 10% required) in every riding to ensure victory. But now, many are saying they want to go even higher to send the government a message.
From Nanaimo to Kelowna, to Kitimat and Courtenay, to Williams Lake and White Rock, to Salmon Arm and Cranbrook, and all points inbetween, people are signing in droves. In the North Peace, they have already signed 30% of the registered voters there. That is more people than actually voted for the government in the last election!
The Citizen Initiative petition is the greatest tool we have ever had to hold the government's feet to the fire. It is the greatest chance we have ever had to tell the politicians that BC and Canada is a government of and for the people, not people of and for the government.
Keep signing the petition. Let's get as many signatures as we can.
Let's send the government a message they will never forget!

BC Finance Minister attacks People's Petition

Campbell Government trying to smear and intimidate volunteers

Delta - Former BC Premier Bill Vander Zalm calls an official complaint filed by BC Finance Minister Colin Hansen with Elections BC over the Fight HST citizens Initiative petition an example of a government "totally out of control".

Hansen says he filed the complaint over what he is calling "misinformation" by the all-volunteer Fight HST group in a pamphlet titled the "HST Hit List".

But Vander Zalm, Fight HST Leader, says it is clear from the government's actions that they are angry at his group for thwarting the government's plan to do a mass mail-out to try to sway voters from signing the petition.

Elections BC today ruled that the government cannot send out the pro-HST mailer until after the Initiative signup period ends July 5.

"Attacking the people's petition, using the undemocratic motion of closure to stop debate in the Legislature on the HST - this is a government that is totally out of control," Vander Zalm said.

The HST Hit list, first compiled by a group calling themselves angryformerliberals.ca, was posted by Fight HST on its web site and distributed to BC voters at meetings and rallies. It contains over 77 items that will be affected by HST after the new tax is implemented.

Fight HST made numerous public requests to government to publish a definitive list of items affected by the HST, but have not received a response to date. The list has a qualifying statement that says "This list is a rough guide only and may change depending on what the Liberals decide to do."

"Without a clear list from government, we were forced to use the best information available to compile the items. We have never said it was definitive, and have been constantly updating it as new information has come to light, both adding items that were left off, and removing items that proved to be incorrect, or clarifying them," explained Vander Zalm.

"There has been no intention to mislead anyone. Out of 77 items, only four or five have been incorrect, and even those only partially. To see the government trying to use its power and resources to beat up on a small band of volunteers, including seniors, young people, small business people and working families who are trying to assert their democratic rights borders on totalitarian demagoguery," Vander Zalm fumed.

"This government is so mad that they are losing public support on this issue that they have turned on the very people who elected them. It is outright dictatorship and they must be stopped before this peaceful revolt against them turns ugly. They are doing everything in their power to try to intimidate people from participating in democracy, and it is frankly quite scary."

"In all my years in politics, I have never seen anything like it," Vander Zalm concluded.

Elections B.C. asked if B.C. Liberals denied voters meaningful participation in 2009 election

By Charlie Smith

Vancouver lawyer and former B.C. NDP leadership candidate Peter Dimitrov has asked Elections B.C. to provide an opinion on the "validity of votes" obtained by the B.C. Liberals in the May 2009 provincial election.

In a letter to chief electoral officer Harry Neufeld, Dimitrov asked that this opinion examine if these votes might have been won by providing "misleading information" regarding the harmonized sales tax.

Dimitrov's letter, which was sent today, also asks "if on a balance of probabilities, your opinion concludes that misleading information was provided by the BC Liberal party on the HST issue during the last BC election, did that conduct prejudice or nullify the rights of registered voters to meaningfully participate in said election, as enunciated by law pertaining to the electoral rights of citizens under the Charter and by virture of common law or Equity".

Dimitrov noted in his letter that Finance Minister Colin Hansen has already asked Elections B.C. for an opinion on whether the initiative campaign led by former premier Bill Vander Zalm is obtaining signatures on the basis of misleading information.

In 2003, Dimitrov was one of seven candidates who entered the B.C. NDP leadership race, which was won by Carole James.
