The last mayoral election in Halifax was in October 2008 meaning the next one won't be until October 2012 - tw and a half years from now. That adds a bit of a wrinkle as well.

The fact that the municpal elections are that far away does not change anything. Stoffer knew they were when he floated his trial baloon.

If he is still keeping his options open [but not saying so] come when the potential Fall federal election window gets close enough, Stoffer has to decide:

* if he is sure he wants to run for Mayor, he says in several months that he has decided not to run federally again.

* if he is not sure he wants to run for Mayor, and especially if a Fall election does not look likely, he could say nothing. Then if there is no federal election.... replay the same choices in Spring 2011.

Back to Kootenay-Columbia, the high Conservative vote is associated with the very popular incumbent, I maintain.  Whoever replaces him will have to be defending the HST in a riding that hates it and is closer to Alberta than most other ridings in BC.  A very strong candidate coupled with the right issue can change everything (as we saw in St. John's East, for example), particularly in a part of the country for whom voting NDP is not completely foreign.

It's a real mistake to rate future possibilities *only* on recent past performance, in my mind.

I wonder if Katy Austin thinks the third time for her in Simcoe-Grey will be the lucky one now that Helena Guergis has finally been given the boot from the Conservative caucus?

Not that Guergis is going anywhere until after June 28th, when she'll qualify for her Parliamentary pension.

Liberaler

Who is running in Davenport against Mario Silva of the Liberals?

I doubt it.  The riding is Conservative-leaning, and the only party that would have a chance at taking it away would be the Liberals, and even that is a shaky proposition unless they can get former MP Paul Bonwick or another big name to run.

All in all, it'd be more likely that Guergis wouldn't run/be nominated again, and the new CPC standard-bearer sweeps back in like nothing happened.  (Barring some big shift t/w a Liberal majority, of course.)

Even in 1990, I think the provincial PCs would have won within these boundaries.  (Jim Wilson's first election BTW)

It looks almost certain that former N.S. NDP leader Robert Chisholm will be seeking the NDP nomination in Dartmouth-Cole Harbour.

A Chisholm/Savage contest would be a very interesting race to watch!

Kevin Chief looks set to run for the NDP nod in Winnipeg North.
