Vancouver Catholic school sends lesbian teacher home

They told her to teach from her home... perhaps from the closet? Sealed

A teacher at a Catholic high school for girls in Vancouver was told to work from home after parents complained about having a lesbian teach their kids, a gay rights group says.

Earlier this week, Vancouver's Little Flower Academy told Lisa Reimer, a music teacher, to work from home for the rest of her contract, which expires in June, the Pride Education Network said Wednesday.

The advocacy group alleges that the private school sent Reimer home because she is a lesbian parent.

Reimer told the school administration of her sexual orientation when she formally requested parental leave in December 2009 because her partner was expecting a baby, the group said.

She was denied the leave in January, and earlier this month she was told to stop teaching in class and work from home instead.

Hmmm, Vriend was employed by a private religious school too.... I am so surprised that the lawyers for the Little Flower Academy don't seem to be aware of that... I hope Ms. Reimer gets a nice settlement when she sues these asshats.

I think what really must have got their dander up was when they found out her partner was pregnant and there was no father to be found.

That's probably when they decided there was no room for her in the inn.

LOL, interesting theory Unionist, how do they square this with their veneration of the Madonna though?

NIMBY. She can go stay in someone else's inn. Just not theirs. It's quite faithful to the Gospels IMHO.

ETA: Look, I'm not familiar with school legislation in B.C. Can these "Little Flower Academy" dirtbags (my apologies to vacuum cleaners everywhere) continue to issue recognized high school diplomas when they treat human beings this way?

Publicly funded Catholic school boards are the only institutions in Canada, that receive public money but are not subject to generally accepted human rights norms. In BC they are only partially funded but in Ont they are fully funded and this shit goes on all the time here. WTF

With regard to termination of Catholic teachers, I've never heard of a teacher being removed for teaching wrong doctrine, or for not teaching Religious Education, or even for not attending church regularly. Terminations have taken place with reference to responsible decisions in a teacher's personal life, usually in relationship to sexuality or marriage. Catholic boards in Ontario have terminated the contracts of teachers who are pregnant and unmarried, who have suffered marriage breakdown and entered a second marriage without an annulment, and who have taken part in a commitment ceremony with a gay partner. All of those grounds for termination are in violation of Canadian human rights legislation, but human rights commissions and the Supreme Court have declared that it's the prerogative of Catholic boards to discriminate on religious grounds, even in violation of human rights. Every day there is something new about these sexy Catholics and it's always sex sex sex related. With the recent onslaught of Catholic contraversy...sexual abuse of children....sex ed curriculum... this...what a golden opportunity this is for the provincial govt to distance itself from the Cath church by eliminating all funding for the Catholic school system in Ontario and not appear to be caving to the one school system movement.

Lisa Reimer is the artistic director of the Zing! children's choir. Here she is turning young children away from the path of righteousness.

Where is the Holy Father to enforce sexual purity when we need him?

A lesbian music teacher who says she was effectively dismissed from her job at a Catholic school after her partner gave birth won't be launching a human rights complaint against the facility.

"I'm going to let this unfold," Lisa Reimer said Thursday, adding she wants to gauge parents' response to the principal's request that she work from home and assign her students online. [...]

Reimer, who is not Catholic, said she signed a clause at Little Flower Academy saying she would respect the Catholic school's faith but hadn't disclosed that she is a lesbian.

"I was not made aware that my personal life would be judged by anyone," she said.

To avoid such embarrassing mixups in the future, why doesn't the school just hook candidates up to electrodes, show them porno photos of various sexes, and measure their responses scientifically? It's not as if we lack the technology to weed out threats to the faith.

I would think that most of that technology is now tied up at seminary schools.

My understanding is that personal code of conduct clauses need to be very clear on points like this to be enforceable. Apparently, all Reimer agreed to as a non-Catholic was to not speak out against Catholicism or promote non-cathlic values. So on the face of it, she would seem to have a good case if she chose to pursue it.

I'll bet she also failed to mention that she was human - arguably a violation of Vatican teachings. I think she's toast, contractually speaking.

Hey, those buttons on the Hitler Youth uniform don't shine themselves, you know.
