Not surprisingly, the government thought better of that the next day, but it illustrates an important point. The continuing expensive mess we've gotten ourselves involved in in Afghanistan is endangering the core function of the Canadian military.

Mulcair raised this in Question Period yesterday. At first I misunderstood why it was an issue for him, but then later understood that he was condemning the shelving of half the navy fleet which was supposedly being done to free up more resources for the Afgan conflict. I give Mulcair credit for raising the issue.
Good! Let the vortex of the Afghan war destroy Canada's military!
Navy Debate Takes Strange Twist

"The NDP demanding that the Conservatives spend more on defence...?"
I listened to Mulcair in Question Period last Friday and he made the point that Canada's coasts - especially the north - need a well equipped navy. Another MP - I can't recall who - said we're spending too much in Afganistan and those resources should instead be spent home on coastal surveillance and maritime rescue.
It looks like Haper's "Canada First" defense policy is more like "Afghanistan and American Empire First" aggressive war and imperialism policy.
- To hell with real defense of Canada sovereignty issues.
I'm sure I heard Harper say that he intends to make Canada a player on the world stage, whatever that means. Military invaders? World conquest?
...nearly shafted the defence of the country
A bit dramatic? Maybe they can use those boats in Afghanistan.
Not really - and why not kick the Tories where it hurts?
I have no problem what that but not necessarily but not if it means increasing the military budget by a single dime.
Aside from search and rescue and surveillance of three really long coastlines, why do we even need a military?
That's the point. There would be room in our existing military budget for a reasonable navy - if we weren't occupied (or perhaps occupying) elsewhere.
