Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad delayed a working trip abroad in order to open the fifth Bil'in International Conference on the Popular Struggle that took place from April 21-23. He also brought with him a bountiful dowry: representatives of 23 foreign consulates and diplomatic missions.

They sat in the giant tent set up in the village's schoolyard, among activists from Bil'in and other villages, as well as children who had come along with their parents and were wandering around with cooked beans and za'atar, women who sat behind tables laden with embroidered handicrafts for sale, a handful of Israelis and dozens of activists from abroad.

The Gush Shalom Settlement Boycott Team decided to remove the name of the cosmetics company "Intercosma" from its list of settlement products, following confirmation that the company finally left the Atarot Industrial Zone on the West Bank.

We oppose all settlements in the Occupied Territories and all industries facilitating these settlements' growth, which are a violation of International Law as well as a major obstacle to peace with the Palestinians. We are in particular opposed to the Atarot Industrial Zone, whose main purpose is to drive a wedge between the Palestinians in Ramallah and those in East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Authority is nearing its goal of covering all its own running expenditures. The news came last Wednesday, as PA Prime Minister and Finance Minister Salam Fayyad presented the recently approved 2010 budget at a conference open to the public. The PA's total running expenditures come to $3.17 billion; and for the first time since its establishment, the PA's income is expected to rise above the $2 billion mark - $2.02 billion in 2010 as compared to $1.688 billion in 2009. This amounts to a 20 percent increase, for now, but the donor countries will continue to fund the deficit.

@ CMOT Dibbler: What is it you are hoping to achieve with your inflammatory postings? There are millions of Israelis... That only thousands protest against the "israeli occupation" we should take it to mean that the protest was not significant.

Virtually all of the time for virtually all Israelis, the Palestinians and the land they want are not part of what they do in their day. Why? Because those Israelis don't want to live in "Judea or Samaria" -- contrary to public opinion. They want to go to work and live in their small neighbourhood and sleep at night in the same house as their children.

To begin with, there is a large section of land, what is currently recognized as the Palestinian Territories that could simply be the foundation of a Palestinian state. If the Palestinians really wanted a state, they could start with that right now and quibble about the 2% of additional land that remains in dispute. Israel of course insists under Netanyahu that a Palestinian state would be subject to airspace restrictions. You know what? After some unknown period of time everyone in the whole world is simply going to agree to remove such restrictions and whatever other restrictions Israel wants to impose.

If the Palestinians want a state, they should take whatever Israel is willing to offer right now and argue about the difference later. What is the fear here?? That Israel is going to steal everything? I got news for you, as a Canadian, I can go buy land in the US even though I am not an American. The fact that it's in the US has only minimal relevance to me. And as far as I am concerned, refusing to work on peace because of a tiny gap of land running between two generally agreed upon parcels of land is sad.

Palestinians can begin to live their lives as they see fit if they only just agree to something. The situation right now is ridiculous if not pathetic. If Russia decided it was going to annex the Canadian Arctic, would I go and wage a violent resistance against Russia or would I live my life and pursue a political solution to the matter? By the way this is happening actually, and I have no intention to throw rocks at Russian soldiers. Violent resistance is immoral under all situations and cannot ever be condoned because the lack of accountability and structure always leads to crimes against humanity. For this, the Palestinians suffer from their own lament more than any reason given to them by the Israelis.

Finally, and this is probably more important, anyone expecting Israel to take in as refugees, people who have never once set foot in Israeli territory and in such large numbers so as to constitute a colonization force, is simply fooling themselves. There is no condition under which any group of people would ever agree to this, so why is it even conceived? Why? It is such an obstacle to peace that it can pretty much be considered axiomatically as the desire not to want peace. Why would the PA even bother to negotiate boundaries if the prospect millions of "refugees returning" to Israel was plausible? After colonization, Israel could simply choose a one-state solution and rename itself Palestine. But the PA does not even proffer that option -- even Abbas does not really take it seriously, so do Canadians?

The Defense Ministry this week completed carrying out the September 2005 High Court order to alter the route of the West Bank separation fence near the settlement of Alfei Menashe.

Work was officially completed Wednesday, but yesterday workers could still be seen dismantling sections of the fence along the nearby wadi. A mistaken report needs to be corrected. Two weeks ago I wrote about a young man who claimed he was expelled from the West Bank to Gaza. He was born in Gaza but had lived in the West Bank since he was 7, he said. The military spokesman's office informed me that it was not familiar with the case, but I've heard that line before - for example, in reference to Palestinians who were used as "human shields" during Operation Cast Lead. The fact that the army says it doesn't know about an incident doesn't mean such an incident hasn't taken place.

They believe that George W. Bush planned the destruction of the Twin Towers in order to further his wicked aims. They believe that the big pharmaceutical corporations spread the swine flue virus in order to sell their worthless vaccines. They believe that Barack Obama is a secret agent of the military-industrial complex. They believe that fluoride is put into drinking water to sterilize men, in order to reduce mankind by exactly two billion. And so on.

I wonder that they have not yet uncovered the most nefarious conspiracy of all: the one perpetrated by the gang of anti-Semites who have taken control of the government of Israel and are using it to destroy the Jewish State.

The convergence of views, I suppose would end with Avnery's informed outlook on the Israeli "apartheid" comparison being false and the counterproductivity of the "boycott" movement:

At least 60 journalists from several countries who were on the Gaza flotilla will be filing their stories over the next few days. Police arrested the journalists together with the other passengers, some of whom were released yesterday, with the rest expected to be released today.

Very few of the posts in the 14 threads on this so-called "peace movement," and not one post in this thread, other than this one, so much as mentions an "Israeli peace movement."

If an "Israeli peace movement" were to appear suddenly, how would one recognise it?

I suppose Gush Shalom and orginizations like ICHAD, as well as groups like Courage to Refuse and Anarchists against the wall are part of the Israeli peace movement . Unfortunatly Peace Now, which you seem to feel represents the whole movement(they do not) isn't a real peace organization. They are too closely connected to the Israeli Labor Party.

The real peace movement may be small, and mainstream Israeli "peace activists" may be gullible idiots(Gosh! Barack says we have no partner. Let's believe every word that comes out of his chubby mouth and stop fighting all together!) but I believe there are people in Israel, (both Jewish and Arab) who want peace with the Palestinians. They can't all be bloodthirsty shits.
