All Hail the Israeli peace movement 14

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad delayed a working trip abroad in order to open the fifth Bil'in International Conference on the Popular Struggle that took place from April 21-23. He also brought with him a bountiful dowry: representatives of 23 foreign consulates and diplomatic missions.

They sat in the giant tent set up in the village's schoolyard, among activists from Bil'in and other villages, as well as children who had come along with their parents and were wandering around with cooked beans and za'atar, women who sat behind tables laden with embroidered handicrafts for sale, a handful of Israelis and dozens of activists from abroad.

The "Intercosma" company left the Occupied Territories and was removed from the settlement boycott list

The Gush Shalom Settlement Boycott Team decided to remove the name of the cosmetics company "Intercosma" from its list of settlement products, following confirmation that the company finally left the Atarot Industrial Zone on the West Bank.

We oppose all settlements in the Occupied Territories and all industries facilitating these settlements' growth, which are a violation of International Law as well as a major obstacle to peace with the Palestinians. We are in particular opposed to the Atarot Industrial Zone, whose main purpose is to drive a wedge between the Palestinians in Ramallah and those in East Jerusalem.

A Cloud over Jerusalem

EVERYONE HAS the right to change his or her mind. Even Danny Tirzeh.

Colonel Tirzeh was responsible for planning the wall that "envelopes" Jerusalem - the one that cuts the city off from the West Bank in order to turn it into the United Capital Of Israel For All Eternity.

And now, suddenly, Tirzeh pops up as the main opponent of the wall he himself planned. He wants to move it, so as to leave the lands of al-Walaja village on the "Israeli" side.

The Palestinian Authority is nearing its goal of covering all its own running expenditures. The news came last Wednesday, as PA Prime Minister and Finance Minister Salam Fayyad presented the recently approved 2010 budget at a conference open to the public. The PA's total running expenditures come to $3.17 billion; and for the first time since its establishment, the PA's income is expected to rise above the $2 billion mark - $2.02 billion in 2010 as compared to $1.688 billion in 2009. This amounts to a 20 percent increase, for now, but the donor countries will continue to fund the deficit.

@ CMOT Dibbler:  What is it you are hoping to achieve with your inflammatory postings?  There are millions of Israelis...  That only thousands protest against the "israeli occupation" we should take it to mean that the protest was not significant.

Virtually all of the time for virtually all Israelis, the Palestinians and the land they want are not part of what they do in their day.  Why?  Because those Israelis don't want to live in "Judea or Samaria" -- contrary to public opinion.  They want to go to work and live in their small neighbourhood and sleep at night in the same house as their children.

To begin with, there is a large section of land, what is currently recognized as the Palestinian Territories that could simply be the foundation of a Palestinian state.  If the Palestinians really wanted a state, they could start with that right now and quibble about the 2% of additional land that remains in dispute.  Israel of course insists under Netanyahu that a Palestinian state would be subject to airspace restrictions.  You know what?  After some unknown period of time everyone in the whole world is simply going to agree to remove such restrictions and whatever other restrictions Israel wants to impose.

If the Palestinians want a state, they should take whatever Israel is willing to offer right now and argue about the difference later.  What is the fear here??  That Israel is going to steal everything?  I got news for you, as a Canadian, I can go buy land in the US even though I am not an American.  The fact that it's in the US has only minimal relevance to me.  And as far as I am concerned, refusing to work on peace because of a tiny gap of land running between two generally agreed upon parcels of land is sad.

Palestinians can begin to live their lives as they see fit if they only just agree to something.  The situation right now is ridiculous if not pathetic.  If Russia decided it was going to annex the Canadian Arctic, would I go and wage a violent resistance against Russia or would I live my life and pursue a political solution to the matter?  By the way this is happening actually, and I have no intention to throw rocks at Russian soldiers.  Violent resistance is immoral under all situations and cannot ever be condoned because the lack of accountability and structure always leads to crimes against humanity.  For this, the Palestinians suffer from their own lament more than any reason given to them by the Israelis.

Finally, and this is probably more important, anyone expecting Israel to take in as refugees, people who have never once set foot in Israeli territory and in such large numbers so as to constitute a colonization force, is simply fooling themselves.  There is no condition under which any group of people would ever agree to this, so why is it even conceived?  Why?  It is such an obstacle to peace that it can pretty much be considered axiomatically as the desire not to want peace.  Why would the PA even bother to negotiate boundaries if the prospect millions of "refugees returning" to Israel was plausible?  After colonization, Israel could simply choose a one-state solution and rename itself Palestine.  But the PA does not even proffer that option -- even Abbas does not really take it seriously, so do Canadians?

Some settlers are employing a new strategy to get Palestinians evicted from their land in the northern region of the Jordan Valley, Haaretz has learned. A number of settlers, some of whom are residents of the Maskiot settlement, set up a "protest" tent next to a tent belonging to Bedouin herdsmen near Wad el Maleh, on private Palestinian land. Last Thursday, after the Palestinians complained to the civil administration, both the Israelis and Palestinians there were handed decrees declaring the area a closed military zone, signed by brigade commander Yochai Ben-Yishai.

Israeli apartheid regime to "reinvestigate" shooting of unarmed protestor Tristan Anderson of Oakland, Calif.

Quote:
The Israeli authorities have done their best to sweep the case under the rug. Last August the Ministry of "Defense" declared the incident an "act of war" - a classification that, under Israeli law, relieves the state of any liability - and in December the Ministry of "Justice" decided to shut down its investigation into the case, on the grounds that the police had found "a lack of criminal culpability."

Apparently, to the barbarous Israeli regime, peaceful protest is "an act of war". But wait! There's more:

Quote:
Early this month, however, Anderson's parents filed an appeal against the closing of the case. Their attorney, Michael Sfard, cited "severe negligence in the work of the investigation team," pointing out that the investigators had never even bothered to visit the scene of the shooting and that the Border Police unit they questioned was not the unit that had fired at Anderson.

Do you remember SS Major Hochstetter of Hogan's Heroes? Every death in custody was a result of the prisoner being "shot while attempting to escape". Sounds similar. Let's read a bit more:

Quote:
"The astonishing negligence of this investigation and of the prosecutorial team that monitored its outcome is unacceptable, but it epitomizes Israel's culture of impunity," Sfard said as he released the appeal to the press. "Tristan's case is actually not rare; it represents hundreds of other cases of Palestinian victims whose investigations have also failed."

"a culture of impunity". What an uncivilized regime.

Israel. The only democracy in the middle east? lol.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unjustifiably draws fire for policies that move ahead without his involvement. The Jewish intellectuals, who suddenly saw the darkness and were terrified, should know: Even if not one more Jewish home is built in the occupied territories ‏(including East Jerusalem‏), the enormous apparatus of domination continues to operate there with an inner logic of many years' duration. It moves along by itself, like some huge aircraft without a pilot.

I ADMIRE Prof. John Mearsheimer. His rigorous logic. His lucid presentation. His rare moral courage.

And I don't agree with his conclusions.

What do an outpost, a Palestinian child and a pacifist have in common?

How is it that the name Yaron Kostelitz is so familiar? Last Wednesday it appeared in connection with the unauthorized outpost of Amona. The strange, Kafka-esque world of the Palestinian victims of Israeli harassment and atrocities:

Quote:
Last Thursday, in the early hours of the morning, a Palestinian community leader's home was raided by Israeli security forces. In front of his family, the wanted man was hauled off to detention without access to a lawyer, while his home and offices were ransacked and property confiscated.

What's noteworthy here is that the Gestapo tactics were used in Israel itself - not only the occupied territories.

Quote:
After being snatched last week, Makhoul's detention was subject to a court-enforced gagging order, preventing the Israeli media from even reporting that it had happened. This ban was finally lifted yesterday, as Israeli newspapers were being forced to report on angry protests by Palestinians in Israel without explaining the specific provocation.

Gestapo tactics - now in Israel as well as the occupied territories.

The Defense Ministry this week completed carrying out the September 2005 High Court order to alter the route of the West Bank separation fence near the settlement of Alfei Menashe.

Work was officially completed Wednesday, but yesterday workers could still be seen dismantling sections of the fence along the nearby wadi. The rerouting means three Palestinian villages - Ras al-Tira, Daba, and Wasi Rasha - will no longer be locked into enclaves by the fence, and their combined 900 residents will now be linked to Qalqilyah and other area communities.

A Black Hole

JUST TO die of envy. How the British manage to do these things! What a democracy! What dignity!

Elections within a month. A new coalition within five days. A change of government within 70 minutes. A visit to the queen. The departing prime minister takes his wife and two small children, leaves the prime minister's residence and walks away. The new prime minister enters the residence.

Elegant, smooth, brief, and with good grace. The people have spoken, and that's that.

And with us?

Our election campaigns go on for months and months. Tumult fills the air, a cacophony of curses and general vulgarity. After that, months pass before a new coalition is formed. In the meantime, the victors and the vanquished trade insults. Lefties, fascists, traitors, destroyers of Israel, despoilers of Jerusalem, lackeys of the occupation, thieves - anything goes.

A mistaken report needs to be corrected. Two weeks ago I wrote about a young man who claimed he was expelled from the West Bank to Gaza. He was born in Gaza but had lived in the West Bank since he was 7, he said. The military spokesman's office informed me that it was not familiar with the case, but I've heard that line before - for example, in reference to Palestinians who were used as "human shields" during Operation Cast Lead. The fact that the army says it doesn't know about an incident doesn't mean such an incident hasn't taken place.

Hallelujah, the World is Against Us!

A LOCAL TV station told us this week about a group of Israelis who adhere to conspiracy theories.

They believe that George W. Bush planned the destruction of the Twin Towers in order to further his wicked aims. They believe that the big pharmaceutical corporations spread the swine flue virus in order to sell their worthless vaccines. They believe that Barack Obama is a secret agent of the military-industrial complex. They believe that fluoride is put into drinking water to sterilize men, in order to reduce mankind by exactly two billion. And so on.

I wonder that they have not yet uncovered the most nefarious conspiracy of all: the one perpetrated by the gang of anti-Semites who have taken control of the government of Israel and are using it to destroy the Jewish State.

CMOT appears to be a fan of Uri Avnery, who he has linked to a few times in this thread, I assume as an authoritative source.

The convergence of views, I suppose would end with Avnery's informed outlook on the Israeli "apartheid" comparison being false and the counterproductivity of the "boycott" movement:

"this is an example of a faulty diagnosis leading to faulty treatment. To be precise: the mistaken assumption that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict resembles the South African experience leads to a mistaken choice of strategy.

True, the Israeli occupation and the South African apartheid system have certain similar characteristics. In the West Bank, there are roads "for Israelis only". But the Israeli policy is not based on race theories, but on a national conflict. A small but significant example: in South Africa, a white man and a black woman (or the other way round) could not marry, and sexual relations between them were a crime. In Israel there is no such prohibition. On the other hand, an Arab Israeli citizen who marries an Arab woman from the occupied territories (or the other way round) cannot bring his or her spouse to Israel. The reason: safeguarding the Jewish majority in Israel. Both cases are reprehensible, but basically different."

"Denying my entry to the West Bank was a minor event, but significant because it indicates irrational behavior on the part of Israel," the linguist Noam Chomsky said at the start of his lecture last Tuesday to a few dozen students and faculty members of Bir Zeit University. He delivered his lecture, "Americans and the World," by video conference, of course: He in Amman, his audience in one the university's lecture halls. With all due respect to technology, the sound system did not allow for a real dialogue, much less an opportunity to pause for clarification. Thus it was impossible to interrupt Chomsky and ask him to define "irrational" and to say whether he considers this to be a new stage in Israeli policy.

At least 60 journalists from several countries who were on the Gaza flotilla will be filing their stories over the next few days. Police arrested the journalists together with the other passengers, some of whom were released yesterday, with the rest expected to be released today.

I suppose Gush Shalom and orginizations like ICHAD, as well as groups like Courage to Refuse and Anarchists against the wall are part of the Israeli peace movement . Unfortunatly Peace Now, which you seem to feel represents the whole movement(they do not) isn't a real peace organization. They are too closely connected to the Israeli Labor Party.

The real peace movement may be small, and mainstream Israeli "peace activists" may be gullible idiots(Gosh! Barack says we have no partner.
