There are thousands of ordinary Israelis and Palestinians stepping forward to end the bloodshed, preserve human rights, promote reconciliation and build a sustainable, free and secure future for all. However, their stories seldom make the headlines, drowned out by sensational media coverage of the region. This prevents the discourse on nonviolent conflict resolution among Israelis and Palestinians from emerging in the public sphere.

There is an urgent need to share these peacebuilders' hard-won experiences with others, to promote initiatives that are successful and to encourage broader publics to get involved.

Right Wing Zionist Thugs Try to Assault Peace Activist Uri Avnery

http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/06/06/right-wing-zionist-thugs-...

"Not only was this one of the largest peace demonstrations for a long time, but also the first time that all parts of the Israeli peace camp - from Gush Shalom and Hadash to Peace Now and Meretz - did unite for common action.  The main slogan was 'The Government is Drowning All of Us' and "We must Row toward Peace' - alluding to the attack on the flotilla. The protesters called in unison 'Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies!'

CMOT Dibbler

The achievement of the failed flotilla to Gaza - mainly, it must be conceded, by its dead - is that the demand is being heard from everywhere that Israel halt its policy of siege. The government of Israel was not willing to listen to the desperate supplications of John Ging, the head of UNRWA in Gaza. Now it must heed French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. But unknowingly, this flotilla, like its predecessors and the ones still to come, serves the Israeli goal, which is to complete the process of separating the Gaza Strip from the West Bank. The process, it will be said here for the millionth time, started in 1991 and not after the rise of Hamas rule. It's purpose was to thwart the two-state solution, which the world understood at that time as based on all of Gaza and the West Bank, and the link between them.

Gazans get halva, but not cookies

Israel eased its three-year blockade on the Gaza Strip this week, allowing in a number of previously banned food items, including coriander and instant coffee. The move came in the wake of worldwide condemnation following Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound flotilla.

Palestinian teen accuses IDF of sexual harassment

A 15-year-old Palestinian has claimed that Israeli soldiers assaulted him and made threats of a sexual nature during a recent arrest.

In a response to Haaretz, the Spokesman's Office of the Israel Defense Forces said a military police investigation into the allegations has been ordered. The Israel Police said that the allegations did not match the findings of its investigation, and that in his statement to police the complainant made no mention of violence being used against him.

Who is Afraid of a real Inquiry?

If a real Commission of Inquiry had been set up (instead of the pathetic excuse for a commission), here are some of the questions it should have addressed:

  1. What is the real aim of the Gaza Strip blockade?
  2. If the aim is to prevent the flow of arms into the Strip, why are only 100 products allowed in (as compared to the more than 12 thousand products in an average Israeli supermarket)?

Amira Hass / Beatings, arrests, nighttime raids and dubious indictments

M., a Haaretz reader from Zichron Yaakov, was disturbed by reports about the manner in which Palestinian children are arrested in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. They are being detained held in the middle of the night, held in conditions of fear and pain before their interrogations, and then finally interrogated without the presence of their parents or a lawyer.

Report: Israel Police shot Palestinian instead of arresting him

A motorist from East Jerusalem who ran over and wounded several Border Police officers Friday was shot twice in the face from close range while still lying on the ground, eyewitnesses said. Neighborhood witnesses said the fatal shots were fired once the officers no longer had reason to fear that their lives were in danger, and could have easily arrested the suspect.

Witnesses in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Wadi Joz told Haaretz that the motorist, Ziad Jilani, suddenly swerved his car and hit the group of officers walking further up the road. They said, however, that they believed the collision was an accident, and not committed intentionally as initially reported.

Each board-member who fails to act, effectively condones the desecration of human remains and the violation of a sacred burial site."

A Flash of Lightning

NIGHT. UTTER darkness. Heavy rain. Visibility close to nil.

And suddenly - a flash of lightning. For a fraction of a second, the landscape is lit up. For this split second, the terrain surrounding us can be seen. It is not the way it used to be.

OUR GOVERNMENT' action against the Gaza aid flotilla was such a lightning flash.

Palestinian Jerusalemites go work abroad and get residency revoked upon return

Palestinians who choose to study and work abroad are finding out - too late - that they have imperiled their right to return to their hometown.

Last Wednesday afternoon a "shabah," an illegal sojourner, sat in the small conference room of Jerusalem District Court Judge Noam Solberg. That's how he was described by Solberg and a representative of the Interior Ministry, attorney Gur Rosenblatt. The illegal resident reads and writes Hebrew, but in the small room he had difficulty following the learned claims of the judge to the effect that a person born in Jerusalem's neighborhood of Sur Baher 43 years ago, whose parents and grandparents and great-great grandparents are from there, who went to elementary school and high school in Jerusalem, who recently paid NIS 120,000 for a construction permit from the Jerusalem municipality, is an illegal sojourner. In other words, a criminal.

Who will be punished for killing civilians in the Gaza war?

Why was Staff Sgt. S., out of all the Israel Defense Forces' soldiers and officers, chosen to stand trial for killing two women in the Gaza Strip on January 4, 2009, the first day of Israel's ground incursion there? The IDF killed 34 armed men that same day. Was S. chosen because he was the only one who killed civilians?

"Gisha - Legal Center for Freedom of Movement today launched the first computer game of its kind in Israel: "Safe Passage" allows the user to experience interactively the restrictions on movement between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank through innovative use of animation, flash documents, video clips and a blog. The game includes an archive of dozens of legal documents that shed light on military legislation and legal rulings since the 1990s, when Israel began imposing increasing restrictions on movement between the two parts of the territory."

The decisions of the Israeli government regarding the easing of the siege on the Gaza Strip were not felt on the ground the day after the decision. The economist Muhammed Skaik, trade officer at the Gaza branch of the Palestinian trade center Paltrade, told Haaretz that improvement and change depend on a number of factors and cannot be measured only by the increase in the number of items permitted to be brought into the Strip.

Anytime the issue of Palestinian prisoners is raised, especially in a week in which Israel marks the fourth anniversary of Staff Sgt. Gilad Shalit's kidnapping, the subject of the Red Cross' mandate is raised. Pierre Dorbes is the deputy head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Israel and the Occupied Territories.

If a policeman had witnessed the hit-and-run accident that took the life of cyclist Shneor Cheshin on Friday, would he have killed the driver after catching him? Of course not. But on Friday, June 11, in broad daylight in the middle of a residential neighborhood, a policeman killed a driver who ran into - but did not kill - pedestrians: police officers on foot.

Shalit, For Example

I AM composing these lines while looking through the window at the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, and thinking about the young man who is being held not far from this sea, a few dozen kilometers from here.

Can Gilad Shalit look out on the same sea through his window? Does he even have a window? How is he? How is he being treated?

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met in his Ramallah office on Wednesday and on Friday with two Islamist members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and a former Hamas cabinet minister. This rare meeting was not related to the reconciliation efforts between Fatah and Hamas. It was held thanks to the Israeli Interior Ministry and the Israel Police. On June 29, 2006 then-interior minister Roni Bar-On revoked the residency status of four Jerusalem residents - PLC members Mohammed Abu Tir, 60; Mohammed Totah, 41; Ahmed Atoun, 42; and Khaled Abu Arafa, 49, who served for just three months as the minister for Jerusalem affairs in the government of Ismail Haniyeh before being arrested.

The Palestinian Monitoring Group at the Negotiations Affairs Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization is continuing on a daily basis to report the events of the previous day. The report is concise and tends to be repetitive, with some omissions that are understandable and others that are not. (For example, they do not keep track of Israeli bureaucratic harassment, perhaps because they lack the manpower to keep an eye on all these events ). The report provides boring but necessary statistics that remind us where we are living.

A Broomstick Can Shoot

A VICTORY is a victory. A big victory is better than a small one, but a small victory is better than a defeat.

This week we won.

Immediately after the Turkel Commission was set up to investigate the flotilla incident, Gush Shalom filed a petition to the Supreme Court of Justice against its appointment. We demanded its replacement by a full-fledged State Commission of Inquiry. The court hearing was fixed for last Wednesday. But on Tuesday afternoon, the Attorney General's office called our lawyer, Gabi Lasky: the Prime Minister had decided at the last moment to increase the powers of the commission, and the government was about to confirm the change. Therefore, the Attorney General asked us to agree to a postponement of the hearing for ten days.

More annoying than a vuvuzela

The vuvuzelas apparently annoy Gazans who watch the soccer World Cup less than their brothers in the West Bank - that's simply because the noise of the generators disturbs them more.

Haaretz's sources estimate cautiously that the number of mobile generators in Gaza increased in the run-up to the World Cup. Coffee shops and clubs that did not yet have one hurried to buy a generator and procure diesel oil from Egypt. The number of beach cafes that set up a generator and bought a large flat-screen TV also increased. This is yet another way to forget the prolonged initiated electricity outages that sometimes last up to 16 hours a day.

Were it not for Mohammed Abu Tir's red beard, this would perhaps be only a marginal news item: Israel is working to expel four Palestinian residents of Jerusalem affiliated with Hamas from the city of their birth.
There are those who see this expulsion as demonstrating a proud national stance, but it is already turning out to be a political boomerang. Abu Tir is under arrest, because he did not leave Jerusalem on June 19. His colleagues - Khaled Abu Arafa, formerly the Jerusalem affairs minister in Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh's government, and Ahmed Atun and Mohammed Totah, both members of the Palestinian Legislative Council on behalf of an Islamic list identified with Hamas - have moved into the Red Cross office in East Jerusalem.

In Gaza, Cast Lead felt like a war on civilians
It was clear by January 5, 2009 that something terrible had happened to the Al-Samouni family, after a few survivors of the bombed building reached the hospital. In front of Al Jazeera cameras, a father gestured toward the bodies of several of the family's toddlers and said in Hebrew: "We just want to understand what these children did, that they killed them."

Two Sit-Ins

AT THIS moment, two sit-ins are taking place in Jerusalem, two kilometers apart. In West Jerusalem, the Shalit family is sitting in a protest tent in front of the Prime Minister's residence, swearing to remain there until the return of their son. In East Jerusalem, three members of the Palestinian parliament are holed up in the building of the International Red Cross.

The word that connects the two is: Hamas.

The day after Barack Obama praised Benjamin Netanyahu for easing the blockade of Gaza, the High Court of Justice supported the state's position that a lawyer from the Gaza Strip should not be allowed to leave it so she can study for a master's degree in human rights at Birzeit University in the West Bank. Justices Miriam Naor, Hanan Melcer and Isaac Amit wrote in a ruling they handed down on Wednesday, in the case of 29-year-old Fatma Sharif: "We are not convinced that under the present political and security situation, the personal circumstances [of the petitioner] justify intervention in the decision of the respondent [the defense minister]."

A Parliamentary Mob

WHEN I was first elected to the Knesset, I was appalled at what I found. I discovered that, with rare exceptions, the intellectual level of the debates was close to zero. They consisted mainly of strings of clichés of the most commonplace variety. During most of the debates, the plenum was almost empty. Most participants spoke vulgar Hebrew. When voting, many members had no idea what they were voting for or against, they just followed the party whip.

That was 1967, when the Knesset included members like Levy Eshkol and Pinchas Sapir, David Ben-Gurion and Moshe Dayan, Menachem Begin and Yohanan Bader, Meir Yaari and Yaakov Chazan, for whom today streets, highroads and neighborhoods are named.

@CMOT, so obviously it's not the wonderful democratic nature of the Israeli system that made the country survive and endure in the face of overwhelming animosity.  What then is its secret to "success"?

N.Beltov N.Beltov's picture

1 billion a year in military "aid" from the USA? Or is it 2 billion a year now?

cruisin_turtle

The economic prosperity in Israel is much larger than what a few billions can do.  In fact the standard of living in Israel, at least among Jewish Israelis, is one of the highest in the world.

My thought was more of a general nature questioning the stereotype that western countries are prosperous because of their democratic political system and and underdeveloped countries are so because they lack a "political democratic system".  From CMOT's message, Israel in its early days obviously didn't have much of a lively democratic process but that didn't have an effect on its success.  A more current example would be China.

Skinny Dipper

I went to the supermarket to buy some products labelled Kosher.  I looked at the back to see where they were made.  One product mentioned Israel.  I did not buy that product.  It was only worth $4.99.  Instead, I bought another product that had a Kosher symbol.  I think that small amount will make a difference in the long run.

The woman looked at the young man in front of her as though he were a rare museum exhibit. He's a native of Gaza who arrived in the West Bank on his own about four years ago, and has lived there since then. He's not a senior official in Fatah or in one of the Palestinian Authority security services, not a relative or an associate of a highly placed person.
