No Yards--what's 'racist' about pointing out that Fethullah Gülen (an Islamist organization, the head of which lives in the U.S.) has taken control of the Turkish State, and is probably the benefactor behind that convoy of ships. This mess was the last nail in the coffin for the Kemalist Turkish Military, which is currently the only institution in the country supporting Israel (and not in Gülen's control). And I'm not defending the actions of the IDF. The Israeli Military is brash and trigger-happy, to say the least, which is probably what the people who organized this floatilla were hoping for: a shoot-first, ask questions later diplomatic disaster. It's sad that people died, most of whom were probably pacifists with the best of intentions. However, the machinations behind this had little to do with the plights of people in Gaza.

Can you clarify that a bit? Saying the Israeli Military is "Brash and trigger happy" would seem to me to imply that it would be okay for them to blockade Gaza, kidnap and murder activists in International waters, attend over open air prison camps designed to provide collective punishment against a whole people for the actions of a few, if only they didn't keep putting the soup spoon on the wrong side of the table setting.
When we're talking about people being murdered one usually expects some level of outrage that would invoke a little bit more passion than calling the murders "brash" ... "brash murders" at least.

Kevin Neish, from Victoria, B.C., was a part of the international solidarity flotilla to break the siege and blockade of Gaza which was brutally stopped by the Israeli commandoes in the early morning hours of May 31, 2010. The flotilla, which included six ships with over 600 activists from more than 30 countries, was carrying 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
Neish explained, "I got a taste of life in Gaza for the day," after witnessing the massacre on board the MV Mavi Marmara, where Israeli Forces killed at least nine people. In addition to witnessing and speaking out, Neish smuggled out photographs documenting the Israeli massacre which have been published in the Turkish press.
This latest Israeli crime has been condemned worldwide. There have been protest actions across Canada -- including three rallies in Vancouver alone -- condemning the flotilla assault and the Harper government's uncritical support of Israel, whose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was visiting with Harper in Ottawa when the May 31 massacre was carried out.

Its funny really; I saw the video of Kevin aboard the Mavi Marmara, where he says "two soldiers down here bleeding and wounded", yet by the time he was interviewed by the CBC a few days later he had completely forgotten and changed his story to say that he hadn't see any wounds on the soldiers and that they were released unharmed.
Far be it for me to accuse him of lying, instead we could be charitable and concede that any of the many discrepancies in his story are most likely a result of the severe trauma he claims to have underwent. But either way, it doesn't make him a reliable eyewitness. It will be interesting to see if he is able to give some straight answers to some straight questions at the forum :)

The Lebanese flotilla has been green-lighted, and the IDF is already preparing to intercept the vessels as they make their way to the Gaza Strip over the weekend.
The army said the same commandos who took part in the deadly raid on the Turkish ship in late May will also be called to stop the Lebanese vessels.
"We are preparing for several scenarios. It is not yet clear which boats, if any, will make their way towards Gaza or who will be on board. In any case, we will prevent any vessel from reaching Gaza," an IDF official said Monday.

The Navy admitted to some tactical errors on the part of the commandos who raided the Turkish ship "Mavi Marmara" and said there were some problems in the preparations for the takeover, particularly in light of the fact that the ship was carrying members of the pro-Palestinian IHH group. However, the army said, the operation as a whole was successful.
"We must keep in mind that all those harmed during the incident were extremists, not innocent civilians," an army official said.
... As for the Lebanese flotilla, the army may have an advantage as far as intelligence is concerned, but it is also [sic] talking into account that the commandos may be in for a few surprises. "The bottom line is that we will act in the same manner - with the necessary improvements to the tactical problems that were raised," an IDf source said. "If we will find terrorists aboard the vessels, we will not hesitate to harm them..."
Israel fears the cabinet's decision to ease the blockade on Gaza will result in more sails to the Hamas-ruled territory, but the army is focusing on the operational aspects and is not ruling out the possibility that the next flotilla will also end in violence.

Please forward this to whomever and wherever you think it might do some good. I have forwarded it to my MP who is NDP so faint hope there, as we know how timid about pissing off Israel they seem to be. However I won't take no answer for an answer and hope you won't either. Perhaps provincial legislatures should also receive it and asked what they intend to do about it. Since they are so determine to support 'the only democracy in the Middle East' let them ask that august body how it justifies such outrageous actions.

The Dutch Foriegn Ministry informed Amur Abu Rashed, th eCoordinator of the 'European Campaign to Lift the Siege of Gaza' who was present on the freedom flotilla, that they will pay all expenses of a lawsuit which he filed together with another Hollandese citizen against the Israeli authorities because of their abduction in international waters from the ships of the freedom flotilla on May 31, 2010."
If we lived in an enlightened jurisdiction instead of this obscene 'Dominion' perhaps similar lawsuits would also be funded for Kevin Neish et al. Of course it wouldn't be a Tory gov't. It wouldn't be a Liberal gov't. It wouldn't be an NDP gov't...hmm?
