Ha ha, last night my friend and I were actually discussing Crowbar! Lonely Mary was on CKDO (the best station in the east of Toronto for those that can tune into its dulcimer frequencies) and the discussion kicked off. Of course, as far as Canadian bands go, there is no argument that Trooper is the best Canadian band ever. Well, Thor's solo work is pretty good!

Best Canadian band? The Band, of course! Then, the next four, in no definitive order:  Bachman Turner Overdrive, The Guess Who, Crowbar, and The Tragically Hip

I've never heard Trooper, and I'm 60, and have been to concerts and been collecting albums up the wazoo, so obviously Trooper  has made zero impact on me.

Boom Boom, you spread deceit!

How could your heart not have been touched by the rock anthem 'Boys in the Bright White Sports Car'? How could you now have left 'We're Here For A Good Time' playing while you went out for a cigarette break during your DJ set? Truly, lies!

And we all know the story behind how Crowbar got it's name, right?  No?  Well, then I'll tell you the story I heard.  The guys who later went off to form Crowbar used to back Ronnie Hawkins, or at least did for a while.  One day, after a session, Hawkins ended it by saying "you guys could fuck up a crowbar."

Andyways, I've been using Youtube to listen to music in a different way.   I've been looking into covers that modern or modernish bands have done, and then spellunking to find the original versions, or covers of the original versions.

Here's an example:

See post #47 in this thread. Cool

Sorry, Boom Boom, I did not go up far enough.

I'm watching and listening to MJ's This Is It on TMN. I didn't like MJ much, but I'd have to admit his music had evolved. It sounds somewhat more jazz-ier than his "Thriller"days. And he looks freakier/scarier than I recall from 20 years ago.

ETA: Good Lord, they're doing Thriller again.Yell

ETA: gotta admit "Billie Jean" is one of the funkiest dance numbers I've ever seen.

I don't remember how many times I've seen Crowbar live, but they were great, and not as loud as some of the really hard rock or metal bands. Certainly not as loud as Black Sabbath whom I saw in Ottawa when they were starting out - and much funkier than Grand Funk Railroad.

ETA: another Canadian band I liked around the same time as Crowbar and The Band was McKenna Mendelssohn Mainline, they did both rock and blues, I saw them perform live a few times, and had their great album Stink on both vinyl and CD.

I'm listening to Julie London singing Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man right now.

It's from a CD release of an LP my Mom had that I used to listen to as a kid.

This is the album my parents had that I still pull out regularly:

Yeah, but that was five years ago. Laughing

The three albums I play most these days are: Blonde On Blonde (Dylan), Music From Big Pink (The Band), and Stink (McKenna Mendelsson Mainline)

Lard Tunderin Jeezus Lard Tunderin Jeezus's picture

The three albums I've played consistently in the past year or so are Failer (Kathleen Edwards), Nick the Knife (Nick Lowe) and Cracker (Cracker, their first).

I have a Nick Lowe album on vinyl, can't remember how the heck I got it.

Lard Tunderin Jeezus Lard Tunderin Jeezus's picture

Which one?

Lots are good, a handful are classics. I'm a huge fan, but I've never had the chance to see Nick live.

I saw Cracker w/ Camper Van Beethoven (they share a couple of key members) a couple of months ago - that was a great show.

Boom Boom Boom Boom's picture

oops... my bad - it's Dave Edmunds, not Nick Lowe. Boy, is my face red!!!Embarassed

The Dave Edmunds album (on vinyl) is called Repeat When Necessary, is dated 1979, and features Nick Lowe on bass, and it's quite good.

ETA: my memory has been playing stupid tricks on me since I turned 60 last year.

LTJ - are Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds from the band Rockpile??? That was a great band, man.

I've got some good news, and I've got some bad news. The good news is, Nick Lowe is coming to town. The bad news is, Toronto seems to have been absorbed by the U.S.A.

Actually those didjeridoo like things are probably one of my favorite things about the world cup.  I'm a rather sensual individual and they probably produce an effect similar to Bhramari.  Car horns on the other hand just don't satisfy my sensual desires.

Been quite a while since I've listened to anything by Gordon Lightfoot, so I'm going through his albums this weekend. Right now: Gord's Gold (1975).

I've managed to get my online feeds working finally and, as a result, I've been listening to Vancouver Co-op Radio, CKUA in Edmonton (they have Holger Peterson's OTHER Blues radio show)  CFUV in Victoria, CHLY Radio Malaspina in Nanaimo, and, of course, Saturday Night Blues with Holger Peterson

I guess I'm gonna have to break down and listen to a few rabble podcasts as well. Heh.

stumbled upon this group on Al Jazeera of all places ( a show called Playlist.)

This week they profiled a Canadian group called Delhi 2 Dublin ...an Indian /Celtic (and some rap) fusion.

Here's their promo video.

For anyone in Toronto, looks like they are playing the Harbourfront Aug 14th ... free shows as always.

Next week they (Playlist) are profiling a Japanese traditional / rock fusion group, the Yoshida Brothers.

Here's an example of their fusion work, and here they are "unplugged" (My suggestion is to check out their unplugged video first to get an idea on what you might expect in their fusion work ... but whatever way you watch them, enjoy.)

I can get streaming over here ... but I was wondering if I can add it to my list of stations on the iTunes software as well. (It has an equalizer that helps.)

I don't know anything about that.  I'm lucky if I can get the streaming to work for me.  One of my listeners told me he records my shows somehow.  He said it was easy using his method.  I nodded knowingly (via email) and didn't reveal that I had no clue what he was talking about.

I have a casette deck that I use to record SNB on CBC2. Maybe he's faking it and just doing something like that. Speaking of faking it, here are, for babbler enjoyment, THE TEN BIGGEST LIES IN AUDIO ...

Quote:
1. The cable lie. The lie is that high-priced speaker cables and interconnects sound better than the standard, run-of-the-mill (say, Radio Shack) ones.

2. The vacuum-tube lie. Don't believe the claim that vacuum tubes are inherently superior to transistors in audio applications.

3. The Antidigital Lie. You have heard this one often, in one form or another. To wit: Digital sound is vastly inferior to analog.... The most ludicrous manifestation of
the antidigital lallacy is the preference for the obsolete LP over the CD. Not the analog master tape over the digital master tape, which remains a semi-respectable controversy, but the clicks, crackles and pops of the vinyl over the digital data pits' background silence, which is a perverse rejection of reality.... To be fair, it must be admitted that a state-ofthe-art analog recording and a state-of-the-art digital recording, at this stage of their respective technologies, will probably be ofcomparable quality.

4. The Listening-Test Lie. High-end cultists opposition to double-blind listening tests at matched levels (ABX testing). Here's how you smoke out a lying, weaseling, obfuscating anti-ABX hypocrite. Ask him ifhe believes in any kind of AlB testing at all. He will probably say yes. Then ask him what special insights he gains by (I) not
matching levels and (2) peeking at the nameplates. Watch him squirm and fume.

5. The Feedback Lie. Negative feedback, in an amplifier or preamplifier, is baaaad No feedback at all is gooood So goes this widely invoked untruth.

6. The Burn-In Lie. This widely reiterated piece of B.S. would have you believe that audio electronics, and even cables, will "sound better" after a burn-in period of days or weeks or months (yes, months). Pure garbage. Loudspeakers, however, may require a break-in period ofa few hours, perhaps even a day or two, before reaching optimum performance (they have moving parts - me!).

7. The Biwiring Lie. The truth is that biamping makes sense in certain cases, even with a passive crossover, but biwiring is pure voodoo.... At the same time it is only fair to point out that biwiring does no harm. It just
doesn't do anything. Like magnets in your shoes.

8. The Power Conditioner Lie. All well-designed power amplifiers do not require specialized power line conditioners. Plug the amplifier directly into its own wall socket. (Please note that we aren't talking about surge-protected power strips for computer equipment.) ... The biggest and stupidest lie of them all on the subject of "clean" power is that you need a specially designed high-priced line cord to obtain the best possible sound.

9. The CD Treatment Lie. Just say no to CD treatments, from green markers to spray-ons and rub-ons. The idiophiles who claim to hear the improvement can never, never identify the treated CD blind. (Needless to say, all of the above also goes for DYDs.)

10. The Golden Ear Lie. The Golden Ears want you to believe that their hearing is so keen, so exquisite. that they can hear tiny nuances of reproduced sound too elusive for the rest of us. Absolutely not true.

There are of course more Big Lies in audio than these ten. but let's save a few for another time. Besides, it's not really the audio industry that should be blamed but our crazy consumer culture coupled with the widespread acceptance of voodoo science. The audio industry, specifically the high-end sector, is merely responding to the prevailing climate. In the end, every culture gets exactly what it deserves.
