Another Liberal candidate withdraws

All indications are that the Liberals are going to be decimated in the next election. Having your candidates resign before the election is one of the surest signs this will happen. How many is this now?

And Justin Trudeau said to Peter Mansbridge the other night that if things don't work out in politics, he can always go back to teaching. It sounds like he's very passionate about teaching young people. It didn't sound as if he has a lot of faith in the LPC's political fortunes.

I'm not sure we can draw too many conclusions from a candidate not running again in a Conservative stronghold.  It's not like he's a sitting member.

The better indications is the fact that the Liberals don't seem to be able to draw on too much backroom talent or other behind the scenes support.    Unsolicited assistance from academia seems to be going the NDP way of late.   This, plus the obvious leadership difficulties and the empty party coffers are enough, really.

No one knows if this is the slowish process of the Liberals fading away to third or fourth party status.

But if it was, it would look a lot like what we are seeing.

Well, Prince Edward-Hastings isn't necessarily that formidable a CPC stronghold--Belleville can be quite Liberal-amenable, and the same can potentially be said about the increasing gentrification of Prince Edward County.  And until 2004, it was Lyle Vanclief's Grit bulwark.

What's more at issue here is that the next election turned out to be later rather than sooner--issues like that can play havoc with candidacies, and have done so in the past..

The sad but true thing is that he'll probably accomplish more that way.

I think the Ontario municipal elections are going to take a toll on the slates of more than one party, but the Liberals did seem to recruit a lot of candidates from the munipal rolls, so I expect they'll be more affected than the others.

Didn't Ignatieff say the same thing?

Tongue out

Maybe he'll get enough votes to knock Cheryl Gallant from the top spot in terms of popular vote received by Ontario Tories.
