At least three Lebanese and one Israeli soldier have been killed during an exchange of rocket and gunfire along the border between the two countries.
A journalist was also killed, and four more Lebanese soldiers wounded by Israeli shelling on Tuesday. The Israeli army did not say how the Israeli soldier was killed.
"The Israelis fired four rockets that fell near a Lebanese army position in the village of Adaisseh and the Lebanese army fired back," a Lebanese security official in the area said.
Lebanese news sources reported that the journalist killed was Assaf Abou Rahhal, from the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar.
The clashes erupted after Israeli soldiers reportedly attempted to uproot trees on the Lebanese side of the border.

Al Jazeera is reporting at least three Lebanese soldiers have been killed by Israeli forces during an exchange of rocket and gunfire along the border between the two countries. A journalist was also killed, and five more Lebanese soldiers wounded, in the Israeli shelling. At least two Israeli soldiers were shot.
There are conflicting reports about how the violence began. Witnesses told Reuters the Israeli army fired at least seven artillery shells at the village of Edayseh after Lebanese troops fired warming shots at the border. Lebanese troops then responded with artillery fire. The incident appears to be the most serious military confrontation along the border since Israel’s month-long war against Lebanon in 2006.

An initial U.N. investigation of a cross-border skirmish between Israel and Lebanon showed Israeli forces were on their own side of the border when Lebanese troops opened fire, United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said Wednesday.

Israel has too many weapons, including nuclear, and too much power.
The state has allowed settlement to continue and engaged in war crimes.
Many Israelis and Jews around the world have condemned the state's actions.
The current salvo is one in a long history; media cannot say conflict started with Lebanon.
At the same time, the world cannot allow Israel, the US, or any state to solve conflicts with weapons.
War crimes need to be investigated by the UN.
The UN is under the thumb of the US at the Security Council, so it needs to be reformed.
In the meanwhile it is up to all people of goodwill to denounce war crimes and de-escalate aggression.

Good points. However I would note that the UN is also losing its moral authority because it is seen to be so beholden to the interests of the west. I think it is very unlikely that the UN can intervene in the middle east at this point in time and be seen as a neutral party.

Does anyone know WHERE this happened, was it near the Golan? And is there any explanation of why IDF units (instead of non military people) thought it necessary to cut down trees right on the border when there is a possibility of conflict there? especially when it involves crossing the fence there? Why not have the UN do it to remain a little more neutral?

Another perspective is that the Lebanese have cracked an Israeli spy network.
More than 100 people have been arrested on suspicion of espionage since April 2009, including telecom employees, members of the security forces and active duty troops.
Many of the charge sheets accuse the suspects of having helped Israel identify targets during its 2006 war on Lebanon.
The most high-profile arrest came earlier in August, when former army General Fayez Karam, a prominent member of a Christian party allied with Hizbullah, was charged with providing Israel with information on the resistance group.
Two suspects employed in Lebanon's private telecom sector also have been arrested in recent weeks as the authorities crack down on the alleged network of Israeli spies in the country.
Five Lebanese have so far been sentenced to death for spying for the Mossad.
