Who actually caused the Liberal Party of Canada problems, then and now?

There has been a battle going on within the Liberal Party of Canada for a long time, but it seems nobody wants to admit blame.

Let's see if we can figure out who are the main people responsible for bringing the Liberals down to its current state of affairs

First let's take a look at some recent LPC history

GE / Leader / Pop Vote / Seats / Seat % / 2nds / % of 1sts & 2nds / Role

2008 / Dion  / 26.3% / 77 / 25% / 123 / 200/308 = 65% / Official Opposition

2006 / Martin / 30.2% / 103 / 33% / 116 / 219/308 = 71% / Official Opposition

2004 / Martin / 36.7% / 135 / 44% / 145 / 280/308 = 91% / Minority Government

2000 / Chretien / 40.8% / 172 / 57% / 107 / 279/301 = 93% / Majority Government

1997 / Chretien / 38.5% / 155 / 51% / 106 / 261/301 = 87% / Majority Government, BQ=OO

1993 / Chretien / 177 seats out of 295 seats, 60%,  Majority Government

1988 / Turner / 83 seats out of 295 seats, 28%,  Official Opposition

1984 / Turner / 40 seats out of 282 seats, 14%,  Official Opposition

1980 / Trudeau / 147 seats out of 282 seats, 52%,  Majority Government

1979 / Trudeau / 114 seats out of 282 seats, 40%,  Official Opposition

1974 / Trudeau / 141 seats out of 264 seats, 53%,  Majority Government

1972 / Trudeau / 109 seats out of 264 seats, 41%, Minority Government

1968 / Trudeau / 154 seats out of 264 seats, 58%,  Majority Government

And if you don't think the Liberals are in major crisis, think again.

Liberals look on as Tories vandalize Canada

Since 1993 let's have a look what happened in terms of percentage of seats won under which recent leaders. Once the stats are actually analysed, it is quite obvious who the culprits are, so the question for the Liberals is, why have the Liberals not cleaned house and got rid of the group of people who caused their more recent downfall?   This group includes the Turnerites, the Martinites, the Manleys, the McKennas, and the Ignatieffs.

1993 / 1997/ 2000 / 2004 / 2006 / 2008

Chretien / Chretien / Chretien / Martin / Martin / Dion

60% / 51% / 57% / 44% / 33% / 25%

Up 32% / Down 9% / Up 6% / Down 13% / Down 11% / Down 8%

There is a pretty strong case to be made that the entity responsible for whatever happens to political parties is called 'the mainstream media' - it seems to me they play the Cdn public like a fiddle, as the old saying has it. I dissected it all in a bit of detail after the last election - Canadian Media: Reporting or Managing the News of the 2008 Election?   http://www.rudemacedon.ca/lgi/media-narrative.html .

What seems to be underway currently, with Harper starting to take shots and Ignatieff getting built up, unlike the last couple of years of making Ignatieff look ineffective and trying to make people see that Harper is not such a bad buy, really!!, is probably that the 'behind the scenes manipulators' have finally decided that they simply cannot get Harper into majority territory, so they will go with the second option - give it back to the Libs. There is a small difference - the Cons are capitalism heavy and the Libs capitalism light - the heavies figure f** the peasants let them eat cake, whilst the 'lights' have some small sense of 'noblesse oblige', and think the peasants should be treated like at least somewhat valued animals.

Because there would be no Liberal Party left.

The key to the Liberals maintaining power has always been the ability to abuse government to endow media, PR companies, law firms and other levers in the maintenance of power.    The purpose of government, according to Liberals, has always been to fascilitate the flow of money from people like us, to themselves and the people who can keep them at the helm of government.

Now that they no longer have their hands on the levers, nor show any promise of getting their hands on those levers, a snowball effect is taking place.

I hope the door catches them square on the ass on thier way out.

That's the whole thing. Much of the party revolved around access to power and the connections, money and jobs that gives you. Without that, the party actually has to have a point.
